<!--beginarticle-->
<PRE>The artguide and logo guidelines are seriously incomplete and need a lot of
work. Free software projects have a history of rushing into branding that
they will be stuck with for a very long time, from logo to colour scheme to
pallett. If it's not thought through and given the consideration it needs, it
can turn into a millstone around the projects neck or a chaotic round of ever
changing looks that confuses the market.

The project needs to get it's branding process it's organised. Until then
everything should be fluid, even the name should be seen as a &quot;Working Title&quot;.

So therefore:

We need to identify our vision,
Identify the way we want the world to see us.
We need to identify our target market
and then come up with a Brand to suit that market.

The brand does not have to be out there until the announcement of the first
release.
The brand that is created now, will shackle the Marketing team for all time.
The marketing team will only hang around if the brand is good. Hackers need
the tools to do their job, if the IDE they are forced to use when making code
is a pile of shit then they'll go elsewhere. It's the same with marketers,
give them a good brand and they'll come in droves to be part of it.

Ubuntu's strength was in that initial marketing, targeted at 18 to 35 age
group with warm a comforting and attractive pallett (Browns Reds and Yellows)
and a slightly zany way of doing things (Warty Warthog and so on) They
identified a market of young people of above average intelligence who were
not satisfied with the cold clinical professional brand of principal market
leader.

This group had several advantageous facets to them.
1) They were leaders and early adopters of new technology
2) They were rebellious to a degree
3) They had a very positive view of themselves
4) They felt that they deserved to be noticed and that the world should do
stuff for them.

So Ubuntu's branding is aimed directly at that market and very successfully.

The problem that many projects suffer from is that they come up with a
branding that feels good to their own community, while ignoring the market.
And make no bones about it, much of the reason that Ubuntu gets lots of
developers is because of it's wide user base. That makes it sexy, the
opportunity to be famous: &quot;I am part of that..&quot;

Now there is a good argument to be made for going after the same market for
all of the above reasons.

We can learn some lessons from the way Ubuntu did things.

They leveraged their location, used a local language and traditions to give
them a name and a story: Ubuntu = Humanity to Humans and a logo that reflects
and enhances that story.

For me, for this project, I think it's untapped branding strength is in it's
Latin South American Heritage. Connectiva.

Connection,
Computers are about connecting with others and when the world thinks about
South America and connecting they think Dance, .. Tango. If it was my project
in these circumstances I'd be calling it Tango-Linux. The name even
immediately evokes the branding colours and the pallet, Bold Blacks, Fiery
Reds and silvers, the colours of passion. Tango evokes passion, rebellion
but at the same time precision and teamwork.

Unfortunately there is already a Tango Linux, not to mention the Tango Icon
project, but you get the idea.

To conclude: my point is that there needs to be much more consideration given
to the branding elements at this point before we start voting on logos and the
like and I would like to see everything up for discussion, name included, we
are brand new, the world is watching, this is our unique opportunity we need
to stamp our mark boldly but with serious consideration of our goals.

Of course the communities desire maybe just to stay as a small minor player in
the desktop universe, but if that's the case this is not the Mandrake I knew
back at 8.0 when It was on every other computer magazine cover CD, and it was
going after the market in a big way, not worrying about the Ubuntus and
Redhats but out to take down the Redmond machine. Personally I think that
spirit is still there.

Agreed in all points with 2 remarks:

A good example for a logo which tells the story and is simple to stick
in people's minds is the Logo of Deutsche Bank. The slash inside the
square. The slash stands for '%' which points at earnings from
interest rates and the bank's business, lending money for interest.
The square surrounding the slash stands for security, protection of
the earnings, and the house itself.

Others from Linux: ArchLinux and Gentoo.

You write that we will need a logo and branding not before our first
release is ready to roll. What about press releases before that date?
ATM I am writing an article about the Mandriva/Mageia topic for a
German print magazine, the editor asked me to do that to provide some
background to the news. First thing he asked was about a logo to
include.

As we do not have any screenshots I could include only pure text
remains which is a no-go for a 3-4 pages article.

<PRE>Le 23/09/2010 15:00, Graham Lauder a &#233;crit :
&gt;<i> The artguide and logo guidelines are seriously incomplete and need a lot of
</I>&gt;<i> work. Free software projects have a history of rushing into branding that
</I>&gt;<i> they will be stuck with for a very long time, from logo to colour scheme to
</I>&gt;<i> pallett. If it's not thought through and given the consideration it needs, it
</I>&gt;<i> can turn into a millstone around the projects neck or a chaotic round of ever
</I>&gt;<i> changing looks that confuses the market.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The project needs to get it's branding process it's organised. Until then
</I>&gt;<i> everything should be fluid, even the name should be seen as a &quot;Working Title&quot;.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So therefore:
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> We need to identify our vision,
</I>&gt;<i> Identify the way we want the world to see us.
</I>&gt;<i> We need to identify our target market
</I>&gt;<i> and then come up with a Brand to suit that market.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The brand does not have to be out there until the announcement of the first
</I>&gt;<i> release.
</I>&gt;<i> The brand that is created now, will shackle the Marketing team for all time.
</I>&gt;<i> The marketing team will only hang around if the brand is good. Hackers need
</I>&gt;<i> the tools to do their job, if the IDE they are forced to use when making code
</I>&gt;<i> is a pile of shit then they'll go elsewhere. It's the same with marketers,
</I>&gt;<i> give them a good brand and they'll come in droves to be part of it.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Ubuntu's strength was in that initial marketing, targeted at 18 to 35 age
</I>&gt;<i> group with warm a comforting and attractive pallett (Browns Reds and Yellows)
</I>&gt;<i> and a slightly zany way of doing things (Warty Warthog and so on) They
</I>&gt;<i> identified a market of young people of above average intelligence who were
</I>&gt;<i> not satisfied with the cold clinical professional brand of principal market
</I>&gt;<i> leader.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> This group had several advantageous facets to them.
</I>&gt;<i> 1) They were leaders and early adopters of new technology
</I>&gt;<i> 2) They were rebellious to a degree
</I>&gt;<i> 3) They had a very positive view of themselves
</I>&gt;<i> 4) They felt that they deserved to be noticed and that the world should do
</I>&gt;<i> stuff for them.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So Ubuntu's branding is aimed directly at that market and very successfully.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The problem that many projects suffer from is that they come up with a
</I>&gt;<i> branding that feels good to their own community, while ignoring the market.
</I>&gt;<i> And make no bones about it, much of the reason that Ubuntu gets lots of
</I>&gt;<i> developers is because of it's wide user base. That makes it sexy, the
</I>&gt;<i> opportunity to be famous: &quot;I am part of that..&quot;
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Now there is a good argument to be made for going after the same market for
</I>&gt;<i> all of the above reasons.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> We can learn some lessons from the way Ubuntu did things.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> They leveraged their location, used a local language and traditions to give
</I>&gt;<i> them a name and a story: Ubuntu = Humanity to Humans and a logo that reflects
</I>&gt;<i> and enhances that story.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> For me, for this project, I think it's untapped branding strength is in it's
</I>&gt;<i> Latin South American Heritage. Connectiva.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Connection,
</I>&gt;<i> Computers are about connecting with others and when the world thinks about
</I>&gt;<i> South America and connecting they think Dance, .. Tango. If it was my project
</I>&gt;<i> in these circumstances I'd be calling it Tango-Linux. The name even
</I>&gt;<i> immediately evokes the branding colours and the pallet, Bold Blacks, Fiery
</I>&gt;<i> Reds and silvers, the colours of passion. Tango evokes passion, rebellion
</I>&gt;<i> but at the same time precision and teamwork.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Unfortunately there is already a Tango Linux, not to mention the Tango Icon
</I>&gt;<i> project, but you get the idea.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> To conclude: my point is that there needs to be much more consideration given
</I>&gt;<i> to the branding elements at this point before we start voting on logos and the
</I>&gt;<i> like and I would like to see everything up for discussion, name included, we
</I>&gt;<i> are brand new, the world is watching, this is our unique opportunity we need
</I>&gt;<i> to stamp our mark boldly but with serious consideration of our goals.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Of course the communities desire maybe just to stay as a small minor player in
</I>&gt;<i> the desktop universe, but if that's the case this is not the Mandrake I knew
</I>&gt;<i> back at 8.0 when It was on every other computer magazine cover CD, and it was
</I>&gt;<i> going after the market in a big way, not worrying about the Ubuntus and
</I>&gt;<i> Redhats but out to take down the Redmond machine. Personally I think that
</I>&gt;<i> spirit is still there.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>We're missing experimented people in this matters. Branding, art, logo,
we all knew this is very important. But what we didn't (for the most
part of us) is how.
For the market, I can't answer for the initiator team, I'm just a
supporter.
How make an amazing logo, artwork, how make mageia a shining star of
linux ?
We all have this goal. Just missing the path

<PRE>&gt;<i> Is the name 'Mageia' immutable? Do you suggest to rename it?
</I>
Well... I'm not in marketing. But I think the name isn't the problem.

If you have your company (any company) and after two years working you
go to an advertising pro and the first thing he says is &quot;you have to
change the name of your company&quot;, will you do it? I guess you'll do it
if the original name is really a sh*t.

Of course, a good name is an important base for the advertising. But
when the name is set, marketing pros must do the best they can with
it.

And it's not the same if you try to &quot;sell&quot; a server OS to a company or
a desktop OS to a home user, an OEM OS to manufacturers, etc.

Graham Lauder's points are very &quot;logic&quot;. Marketing guys can't sell
something if you don't tell them what they will sell, and who they
must target their &quot;fire&quot;.

That's why Mageia must set mision, vision, etc etc etc.

IMHO.

<PRE>On Thursday 23 September 2010 14:00:22 Graham Lauder wrote:
&gt;<i> The artguide and logo guidelines are seriously incomplete and
</I>need a lot of
&gt;<i> work. Free software projects have a history of rushing into
</I>branding that
&gt;<i> they will be stuck with for a very long time, from logo to colour
</I>scheme to
&gt;<i> pallett. If it's not thought through and given the consideration it
</I>needs,
&gt;<i> it can turn into a millstone around the projects neck or a chaotic
</I>round
&gt;<i> of ever changing looks that confuses the market.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The project needs to get it's branding process it's organised. Until
</I>then
&gt;<i> everything should be fluid, even the name should be seen as a
</I>&quot;Working
&gt;<i> Title&quot;.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So therefore:
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> We need to identify our vision,
</I>&gt;<i> Identify the way we want the world to see us.
</I>&gt;<i> We need to identify our target market
</I>&gt;<i> and then come up with a Brand to suit that market.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The brand does not have to be out there until the announcement
</I>of the first
&gt;<i> release.
</I>&gt;<i> The brand that is created now, will shackle the Marketing team for
</I>all
&gt;<i> time. The marketing team will only hang around if the brand is
</I>good.
&gt;<i> Hackers need the tools to do their job, if the IDE they are forced to
</I>use
&gt;<i> when making code is a pile of shit then they'll go elsewhere. It's
</I>the
&gt;<i> same with marketers, give them a good brand and they'll come in
</I>droves to
&gt;<i> be part of it.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Ubuntu's strength was in that initial marketing, targeted at 18 to
</I>35 age
&gt;<i> group with warm a comforting and attractive pallett (Browns Reds
</I>and
&gt;<i> Yellows) and a slightly zany way of doing things (Warty Warthog and
</I>so on)
&gt;<i> They identified a market of young people of above average
</I>intelligence
&gt;<i> who were not satisfied with the cold clinical professional brand of
</I>&gt;<i> principal market leader.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> This group had several advantageous facets to them.
</I>&gt;<i> 1) They were leaders and early adopters of new technology
</I>&gt;<i> 2) They were rebellious to a degree
</I>&gt;<i> 3) They had a very positive view of themselves
</I>&gt;<i> 4) They felt that they deserved to be noticed and that the world
</I>should do
&gt;<i> stuff for them.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So Ubuntu's branding is aimed directly at that market and very
</I>&gt;<i> successfully.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The problem that many projects suffer from is that they come up
</I>with a
&gt;<i> branding that feels good to their own community, while ignoring
</I>the market.
&gt;<i> And make no bones about it, much of the reason that Ubuntu
</I>gets lots of
&gt;<i> developers is because of it's wide user base. That makes it sexy,
</I>the
&gt;<i> opportunity to be famous: &quot;I am part of that..&quot;
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Now there is a good argument to be made for going after the
</I>same market for
&gt;<i> all of the above reasons.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> We can learn some lessons from the way Ubuntu did things.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> They leveraged their location, used a local language and
</I>traditions to give
&gt;<i> them a name and a story: Ubuntu = Humanity to Humans and a
</I>logo that
&gt;<i> reflects and enhances that story.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> For me, for this project, I think it's untapped branding strength is
</I>in
&gt;<i> it's Latin South American Heritage. Connectiva.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Connection,
</I>&gt;<i> Computers are about connecting with others and when the world
</I>thinks about
&gt;<i> South America and connecting they think Dance, .. Tango. If it was
</I>my
&gt;<i> project in these circumstances I'd be calling it Tango-Linux. The
</I>name
&gt;<i> even immediately evokes the branding colours and the pallet, Bold
</I>Blacks,
&gt;<i> Fiery Reds and silvers, the colours of passion. Tango evokes
</I>passion,
&gt;<i> rebellion but at the same time precision and teamwork.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Unfortunately there is already a Tango Linux, not to mention the
</I>Tango Icon
&gt;<i> project, but you get the idea.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> To conclude: my point is that there needs to be much more
</I>consideration
&gt;<i> given to the branding elements at this point before we start voting
</I>on
&gt;<i> logos and the like and I would like to see everything up for
</I>discussion,
&gt;<i> name included, we are brand new, the world is watching, this is
</I>our unique
&gt;<i> opportunity we need to stamp our mark boldly but with serious
</I>&gt;<i> consideration of our goals.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Of course the communities desire maybe just to stay as a small
</I>minor player
&gt;<i> in the desktop universe, but if that's the case this is not the
</I>Mandrake I
&gt;<i> knew back at 8.0 when It was on every other computer magazine
</I>cover CD,
&gt;<i> and it was going after the market in a big way, not worrying about
</I>the
&gt;<i> Ubuntus and Redhats but out to take down the Redmond machine.
</I>Personally
&gt;<i> I think that spirit is still there.
</I>
A large number of the posts on these forums have really been about
fairly trivial issues compared with this one.

Graham's contribution is thoughtful and serious and if taken up now
could have a fundamental impact or otherwise on the succces of this
distribution.

Now we really need someone with marketing expertise to drive this
issue forward.

Question is WHO?

About Graham, I think that until the board is ready, the &quot;heads&quot; are
the original starters (that I can't identify yet XDDDD). I guess
Romain, Anne, and I don't know who else.

So:

* Option 1: they must give a &quot;yes&quot; to confirm Graham has new &quot;marketing head&quot;.

* Option 2: Maybe they want to wait until the board is ready, an then,
the official board should confirm Graham.

+1 for you
and
+1 for Graham

IMHO, and it has been told before, is that the name is not a problem.

The better example we have is Apple. Stories tell us that the name was a
explicit decision because it was impossible to find a &quot;good name&quot;. Althoug
this story was a lie, is a good example that demonstrate that a simply name
with a really good marketing is enought to grow the power of the mark.

I think that we can start from Mageia, like it evoques the magic world, we
can try to explain that it is that all of us are wanting: easy, eyecandy,
but powerfull and sturdy.

<PRE>Mageia name is not up for debate for the project. Not because it's
good enough or something else, but because that's its name. :-)

That does not exclude that other names may be used, for releases, for
instance. But that's not really what was envisioned at first either.
Let's discuss this later.

As for Graham being marketing team lead - that will be to the
marketing team to decide all together (as well as decide on a

Note that being a team lead is still distinct from being on board, at

hope we will announce more about this by the coming days).

Hi again.

Here's the spanish translation, courtesy of MDKTrans:
------------------------------------------------
&#161;Atenci&#243;n, atenci&#243;n!

Ahora que el anuncio ha sido un gran &#233;xito, las discusiones ya est&#225;n
en curso en las listas de correo (una vez mas, todos ustedes son
incre&#237;bles, chicos), ahora necesitamos establecer bases s&#243;lidas para
Mageia. Veremos cada uno de estos puntos con mayor detalle, pero aqu&#237;
va un resumen:

Infraestructura y herramientas

Agradecemos especialmente a Paul Willard y Raphael Jador quienes

(dise&#241;o, desarrollo, pruebas, producci&#243;n, distribuci&#243;n, promoci&#243;n,

----------------------------------------------------------------

Cheers,
vfmBOFH

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Umm, I'm sure Graham already said that he is offering himself.
</I>
Indeed, being involved at the genesis of a project such as this is exciting as
hell.

&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Graham, I'm not a marketing person, but I agree with almost everything
</I>&gt;<i> you say, the only thing that I don't agree with is that the name should
</I>&gt;<i> be up for debate.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Too many practical things depend on the name so if whe change the name,
</I>&gt;<i> everything else will be on hold until then.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I do think Mageia is a good name, that is versatile enough for you to

</I>&gt;<i> spanish to me when i first read it) it's short and unique.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So IMHO feel free to drive the marketing whichever way you like, but
</I>&gt;<i> please don't ask for a name change.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
Heh, we do get possessive about these things and that is often a problem.

All I'm saying is ask the question, I'm not making any judgements here about
the name, I can't, I don''t have enough information, for the same reason no-
one should say that the name is sacrosanct.

The reason that marketing guys often come into a situation and have to say
&quot;Change the name!&quot; was invariably because the name was not given any
consideration in terms of the market. I mean a Bed manufacturer called
&quot;HiTech Concrete&quot; would not make many sales. I know that's an extreme example,
but you get the idea.

A name has to say something about the organisation, it has to give people a
handle to grab onto to differentiate it from the crowd. Redhat didn't have a
crowd to differentiate itself from when it started but it added Linux to the
name to differentiate it from the main opposition.

CentOS defined it's market with it's name &quot;Community Enterprise Operating
System&quot; ie supplying an enterprise level OS to Community organisations.

Ubuntu however used it's name to define a philosophy that resonated with it's
target market.

We have to remember that the name is just part of the branding and brand
meaning is defined by the consumer of our product. For us the brand should
follow our Vision and Mission statement, the name ideally should be part of
that branding process.

Now having said all that, :)

It is not a given that the name needs to change, any good marketing team will
say &quot;OK How do we make it work for us&quot;

Somebody suggested &quot; The Magic Continues&quot; as a positioner.

Marketing's first responsibility is to the customer, we will look at the brand
from their point of view not from our own. This is a mistake that many FOSS
communities fall into, they brand to satisfy an internal aesthetic, the
community of developers, rather than the greater community of users.

Any decisions that Marketing make will have to be sold to the board in any
case and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Cheers
GL

<PRE>IMHO, Graham is good. He convinced me.
Please, don't shoot me for bringing the idea of renaming in discussion.
My experience as software developer tells me that chosing wrong in the
beginning comes with great suffer after and might be harder and harder to
fix it.
What is the target of Mageia after all? And who?
Me, only me, I like to think of Mageia as a fine trick of Babylon 5
Technomages.
I would like to see it full of high tech references, less mystique, more
technical metaphors - I prefer an orb split two revealing circuits, than
witches. I've always liked to look forward, into space age, rather than
middle ages.
But this is just me AFAIK...
And I love Mandriva as final product, so I fully trust its core developers
that forked Mageia. I watched them for years and I feel about them as they
are my friends. Please don't seed the discontent now, from the beginning. It
was enough Mandriva's story.
No matter the name - you might change it again or not - I will follow.

Mike,
user.

<PRE>I think in the grand scheme of things, we should all acknowledge that
should the name &quot;Mageia&quot; not work, that a name change would be a
possibility, just as a logo change is still a possibility. We have seen
this from many OSS firms who went through this process.

We should be careful in making the distro too &quot;cottagey&quot; or &quot;home grown&quot;
in looks and flavour. I would suggest that the long term vision for the
distro also include a commercial aspect. There should be a community
driven distro and a commercial distro (read server). If we organise
under these terms, then the choice of name, logo and branding changes.

A name and logo for the Mageia project should exude a community spirit
as well a professional corporate spirit. Would a business have a problem
repeating &quot; We use the Mageia distro to run our servers and our
desktops.&quot;? I personally think that the name is solid in this case,
whether for community or corporate use. Side note: I prefer the &quot;soft g&quot;
sound of the name --- &quot; Mah jay ah &quot; (more like the French &quot;j'ai&quot; sound)
-- it sounds classy.

So, the logo should then follow suit and exude the same feeling. It
should reflect both a feeling of community as well as bear the scrutiny
of corporate world. Would they feel confident in hanging our shingle
(read logo) on their website's front page? I too tend to sway more
towards the simple logo concept. I don't personally think that a magic
wand would not work in a corporate setting, this would then limit it's
use. We would then have to adopt a corporate logo. I am not sure if this
would make good sense as, in a way, we would then be fragmenting the
distro. A solid logo for both, in my opinion, would make the most sense.

I'm just a user. I totally agree, although I like to play a little.
I do need a sleek and serious logo/symbol to the OS I use, usually a limo,
but able to deploy a
super-space-age-robot-ready-to-save-the-universe-if-necessary feeling. This
is what I expect. Hope I did not scared you all :D. Hugs.

<PRE>Le jeudi 23 septembre 2010 &#224; 16:17 -0400, Marc Par&#233; a &#233;crit :
&gt;<i> I think in the grand scheme of things, we should all acknowledge that
</I>&gt;<i> should the name &quot;Mageia&quot; not work, that a name change would be a
</I>&gt;<i> possibility, just as a logo change is still a possibility. We have seen
</I>&gt;<i> this from many OSS firms who went through this process.
</I>
How do you assess that it is the name that do not work and that's not
anything else ?

&gt;<i> We should be careful in making the distro too &quot;cottagey&quot; or &quot;home grown&quot;
</I>&gt;<i> in looks and flavour. I would suggest that the long term vision for the
</I>&gt;<i> distro also include a commercial aspect. There should be a community
</I>&gt;<i> driven distro and a commercial distro (read server).
</I>
I fear that this scheme does look like too much the one that caused
problem in the past within Mandriva community, with contradictions
between the community nature and the more commercial version.

How would you ensure that the community version will not be seen as a
cheap version of the commercial one ? How would you prevent this idea
from destroying again the community like it did by the past ?

If theses questions are not solved, I think all attempts to redo the
mistakes of the past are bound to recreate the failures of the past.
And I think that none of us think that's a desirable outcome.

All people who I asked the question said that the only solution is to
have 2 different names and brandings.
Redhat do it, and it work fine from them.
Novell do it, and it work fine.
Canonical do it ( to a lesser extend , since there was
<A HREF="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-servers/+bug/375345">https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-servers/+bug/375345</A> ), and it work
fine.

Even debian based distro used a different name ( progeny, etc ).

We didn't for Mandriva, and so started the confusion between the
company, the distribution and the community. And so people didn't
contribute because it was a business, and the idea that &quot;updates were
not free&quot; stick around for a long time because it was hard to explain to
people the different concept

So if there is a business or commercial version, I think this would
requires a different name and branding. Using the association name for
that would not be right, in my opinion.
