Mageia salutation night in Tallinn

On Saturday, June 4th, almost dozen people were celebrating the very first
release of Mageia in Tallinn, Estonia. Cosy cafe
Mosaiik<http://www.mosaiikcafe.ee/>provided us with big screen for
demonstrations and some food and a great
cream cake specially made for this (see the picture
here<http://mageia.planet.ee/2011/06/mageia-avapeol/>
).
As planned, most important part of the meeting was install fest. That was
total sucess; we did update from Mandriva 2010.0, did install from Live CD
and did clean install, all without problem. Alright, there were some
problems but nothing to do with Mageia - Wi-Fi network we used was quite
unstable causing minor troubles.
Most people attending were profound Mandriva and Mageia users but there were
some knowing both of them just by name (or, in case of Mandriva/Mandrake, by
distant memory). They were positively surprised the infant distribution was
so perfect.
We had planned also to create Estonian Mageia Users Group but, though there
was some talk about it, it didn’t happen yet. Maybe sometimes later... We
all hope Mageia would win more followers in Estonia as it’s profoundly
localized and even provides the package task-esteid which is just essential
in Estonia due to our “omnipotential” and almost ubiquitous electronic ID
card.
You may see a group photo <http://mageia.planet.ee/2011/06/mageia-avapeol/>in
Estonian website specially dedicated to Mageia (as the site is all Estonian,
you may need awfully clumsy but still understandable Google Translate’s
translation<http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=et&sl=et&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fmageia.planet.ee%2F2011%2F06%2Fmageia-avapeol%2F>

The host Virtual box/extension pack, and the guest additions must all
match version numbers.

On the one system (an upgrade from Mandriva 2010.2 to Mageia beta 2
then updated via urpmi to final), I had to add the .conf file under

Salut Marc
Actually most of the arguments here were against a _separate_ user support list.
So far, the discussion list has been used regularly for user support, and apparently with a fairly
good response. It makes sense, as there is considerable overlap. Often a support problem is
closely related to discussion of what should happen. And those interested in discussion are
generally very willing to help if they can.

If you look at the Mandriva experience, the user support by email has reduced considerably over the
years as their forum has become more active. (I was a Mandriva user almost from the beginning.)
There, as with Mageia, support also occurs on both the discussion and development lists.

As far as the idea of replicating forum and mailing list input, that could well come. But since
Mageia is still fairly early in the building stage, we don't yet have the resources to do
everything we might like to do, if we collectively decide to do that.

Anyway, of course everyone's input is welcome.
(And you don't need to apologize, obviously your input is well intended.)

Take care :)

Hello all,

I like the idea of a dedicated support ml for users. Ubuntu is using such
lists and it is very well used even there exists irc and forums as well.

So why shouldn't we try something like that? If it's not used we can delete
the list and use the forums instead.

Like already mentioned the users should decide which kind of medium to use
to ask their questions.

I'm not too familiar with the Ubuntu-way of things, but
https://lists.ubuntu.com/ has the following:

Community Support
ubuntu-users - Ubuntu user technical support, not for general discussions

I agree that they do not seem to have a general discussion list, though I
think this one (last one) would come closest similar to the discussions we
have on here:

Development Lists
ubuntu-devel - Ubuntu Development (developers)
ubuntu-devel-discuss - Ubuntu Development (users and developers)

Other discuss subjects have their own lists to discuss these subjects.

>This mailing list, called Mageia-discuss, is for user discussions and help.
>So why would you want to split this list ?
>You're just going to remove many of the people who help.

I am not sure if this is true. Anyways, if this list is the appropiate
place for end user technical support questions, then it surely is not very
clear. Our documentation and webpages only point to the forums and IRC
channel for support. Also, I feel the current name is a bit of a misnomer
then as it currently is.

Still, why not have one mailinglist for everything then? If any split will
result in removing people providing useful input, then we are already
functioning suboptimally.

Cheers,

Remco

>> This mailing list, called Mageia-discuss, is for user discussions and

No, not true. We have but one list which is aimed at the general
public: this list here. It's purpose is general discussion about
Mageia. There's no word about support in the description.
All other lists are open to the public for the sake of transparency,
but each of them has a special target group (i18n, marcomm, artwork,

There is one point that has not been made, but is to my mind important in this
discussion. I have been on the Mandriva user list for years, and have also
used forums (fora ?) for more specialized queries on OpenOffice and others,
where no ML was available.

The huge difference to me between the two approaches is this: From a list I get
emails every day, glance at them all and delete most of them immediately,
store some of them for future reference, and try to reply to those I feel I
can help with. The forum I only visit when I have a problem, and post a
question, but the rest of the time I do not log in, so I do not get to see
other people's problems, and do not get the opportunity to help.

I can hear the howls of contempt, that I leech the forum but do not contribute
etc. but life is too short, and forum pages download too slow, for me to log
in there daily to see what is happening, just in case I see something
interesting or I can help others there.

We could have both a mailing list and a forum, separate, but this would cause
a multiplication (and waste) of efforts, and loose the cross-pollination
between the ML community and the Forum community.

So, to my mind, the best option would be to have all messages appearing on
both a forum for those who prefer that format, and a mailing list for those
whose preference goes that way, thus giving all what they like/need/want
without waste or loss to either group.

Cheers,

Ron, on the banks of the Paraguay River.

 I always have a quotation for everything;
 it saves original thinking.

discussions exactly the same way you'd do for a mailing list (iow

And you can even subscribe to only sub-parts (just basic support, or

Hello,

When i try to install Mageia 64 bits form nfs server,
i get the following errors :
unable to access medium "Core 32bits Release"
after clicking "ok" :
Problem reading synthesis file of medium "Core 32 bits Release"
after clicking "ok" :
Problem reading synthesis file of medium "Core 32 bits Updates"

After investigation, it seems, that the installer make a link from /tmp/media/x86_64 to /tmp/image
So media.cfg is defined with absolute paths, and it can't find /tmp/i586.

ps: when i try to install from the "boot" image cd with option nfs, i get the same errors.

Thanks

As a user I do pretty much the same. Early on I had mentioned my
experience with the forum and the list on getting a serious problem
quickly resolved. My problem was on the forum for over 24 hrs. without
an answer. When I asked on the list I had an answer in 20 min. I think
the question should be asked of those with the knowledge to answer the
questions. With a forum and a list the experts are being asked to devote
valuable time to both. The forum is also fragmented and takes more time
to go thru each section. I started with ML in 2002. I found the expert
list to be extremely useful.

Essentially, what do the experts want? Those that have the knowledge to
answer the questions. It is their time we are asking them to spend on
the users questions.

> Mageia salutation night in Tallinn
>
> On Saturday, June 4th, almost dozen people were celebrating the very
> first release of Mageia in Tallinn, Estonia. Cosy cafe Mosaiik
> <http://www.mosaiikcafe.ee/>provided us with big screen for
> demonstrations and some food and a great cream cake specially made for
> this (see the picture here
> <http://mageia.planet.ee/2011/06/mageia-avapeol/>).
> As planned, most important part of the meeting was install fest. That
> was total sucess; we did update from Mandriva 2010.0, did install from
> Live CD and did clean install, all without problem. Alright, there were
> some problems but nothing to do with Mageia - Wi-Fi network we used was
> quite unstable causing minor troubles.
> Most people attending were profound Mandriva and Mageia users but there
> were some knowing both of them just by name (or, in case of
> Mandriva/Mandrake, by distant memory). They were positively surprised
> the infant distribution was so perfect.
> We had planned also to create Estonian Mageia Users Group but, though
> there was some talk about it, it didn’t happen yet. Maybe sometimes
> later... We all hope Mageia would win more followers in Estonia as it’s
> profoundly localized and even provides the package task-esteid which is
> just essential in Estonia due to our “omnipotential” and almost
> ubiquitous electronic ID card.
> You may see a group photo
> <http://mageia.planet.ee/2011/06/mageia-avapeol/>in Estonian website
> specially dedicated to Mageia (as the site is all Estonian, you may need
> awfully clumsy but still understandable Google Translate’s translation
> <http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=et&sl=et&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fmageia.planet.ee%2F2011%2F06%2Fmageia-avapeol%2F>)

and it has something of a history. 64-bit installs via HTTP work, but
only if you specify the X86_64 directory. 32-bit installs are capable
of figuring out from the top-level cooker/cauldron directory and the
architecture which subdirector(ies) they should be using.
