I run my systems with no maintenance for years on end. The more
important a server is, the less maintenance I do, since most problems

A yearly release of NEW ISOs should be good enough for people with a

Nonsense. The normal updates are not any more unstable than the original
release, rather the contrary.
Of course occasional glitches can happen but they happen equally on the
original install CDs (as has been proven again and again).

What difference is there between someone who installs from the original
release CD and then applies updates vs. installing from a CD where the
updates are already included?

I'm all for the idea of updated ISOs that include all updates, too.

<PRE>I read the full meeting logs from 25/10, and i noticed tmb saying:

&quot;pretty much a cooker snapshot&quot;

I donno how far you're going to take this; but i thought we would be getting a
new version out ASAP.

in my understanding, we would get a 2010.1 snapshot and use it to build the
first ISO.

and use the cooker snapshot to get a cauldron.

imo the cooker is sooo unstable and broken, we will not be able to get a
working ISO from it, that is more or less stable in this timeframe.

eg:
 * KDE
 * glib
 * perl
 * python
 * RPM
 * ...

most of these will get fixed, in time; but what about ALL the packages
depending on that? most of the packages aren't even maintained...

personally, i'm against using cooker to make a stable ISO 0.

rebranding a 2010.1 will be lots more stable; and maintime we will have the
time to make cauldron (from cooker) into something good, so we will be able to
make a release based on cauldron on the 18th of september.

this route, i can predict that our release will not be stable enough.

i really want to have a stable release which i will not be ashamed of.

we don't have much people working fulltime on this; and just having a 2010.1
with updates rebranded will be alot better. that way we can focus on upgrading
from several mandriva's without issues. and handle all the major changes that
are being pushed in to cooker to work fine in the next release.

i also forgot that:
 * systemd
 * grub2
 * gnome3
 * ...

our new packagers still need to be taught how to package etc...

there is way too much to be done. if we go down this route, our first release
might as well be september 18th...

this is all my opinion, but tbh, i'm getting panicked if i hear this.
realistically, it's just not feasable to have something stable in april that
will upgrade completely fine from mandriva. (even if it's from older releases).

Kind Regards,

Maarten

Actually, the big install base could be used to *increase* the quality of
updated versions over the release version:
If users notice problems with an update: avoid it in the updated ISO.
(That also mean updates newer than a few days should never enter the updated

Practically, at Mageia the automatic thingy gathers all updates except the

&gt;<i> 2010/11/2 Maarten Vanraes &lt;<A HREF="https://www.mageia.org/mailman/listinfo/mageia-discuss">maarten.vanraes at gmail.com</A>&gt;:
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; last meeting i read agreed on april
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Yes, sorry.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; imo, there's way too much to be done to have anything stable; and if we
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; go this route, i can predict that our release will not be stable enough.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Well, I am neither a developper nor a packager. If the leading people
</I>&gt;<i> who are either experienced Mandriva developpers or packagers or
</I>&gt;<i> experienced release project leaders tell me they see April as a
</I>&gt;<i> realistic time of release I do believe them.
</I>
i'm a newbie packager.

&gt;<i> The basis is the current cooker. What makes you believe that the
</I>&gt;<i> Mageia people will not be able to achieve what Mandriva has announced
</I>&gt;<i> to do? Mandriva announced to release end of Q1 / beginning of Q2 2011.
</I>&gt;<i> Both have the same starting point.
</I>
i don't really want to base myself of what Mandriva will do:
 - there is a big amount of bugs that are just sitting there
 - how many devs do they have?
 - they can always postpone or bring an unstable release (there have been
unstable releases in the past)
 - i thought the QA team was almost empty?

The reason for this question of myself is that (as a non-cooker user), i find
the current cooker really really unstable and unfit for release (duh).

however the amount of work there is to be done to make it somewhat stable; and
then again the amount of work there is to be done to make it well-tested and
the amount of work for all the contribs and unmaintained packages...

don't forget that if RPM is upgraded; we will have alot of work to be done to
get everything working properly.

and even then all our contributors will have to be taught as well...

This question is like a reminder that there is a huge amount of work, and
contributors aren't up to speed. and we're not ready for work yet? BS needs to
be finalized. the teams aren't elected yet, there is still lots of wiki and
docs to be done...

personally, i just don't see it feasable in that timeframe.

Kind Regards,

Maarten

They are not more maintained on 2010.1 than on cooker.

</I>
why that's what we do all the time, after a stabilisation period. It
worked fine for the last 7 years, and that's a part of the process that
is used by lots of distributions. ( have a devel tree, fork it for
release, bug fix, release it ). There is slightly different variations
( fedora and no frozen rawhide, debian and testing/stable/unstable ),
but all do the same, basically.

&gt;<i> rebranding a 2010.1 will be lots more stable; and maintime we will have the
</I>&gt;<i> time to make cauldron (from cooker) into something good, so we will be able to
</I>&gt;<i> make a release based on cauldron on the 18th of september.
</I>
But it would be less appealing, and this would make the life of the
communication team slightly difficult. It would also mean getting older
hardware support, older versions of various components ( like python,
for example ).

And this would not save anything, as the bugfix work will have to be
done anyway sooner or later.

More ever, the experience showed that if you give more time to fix bugs,
bugs just take more time to be fixed ( aka, we are lazy ). The more
visible evidence is the activity in Mandriva when a deadline appear &quot;we
will now freeze the version update&quot;, where suddenly everybody update
everything ( while we could have done sooner )

And postponing to september ( ie 6 months later ) will be imho more
problematic, as this will add the current cooker breakage to the one
introduced by all the changes that people will want to push in the 6
months ( gnome 3, etc, etc ). We have already experience with the
current 6 months cycles, but we do not really have with a 1 year cycle,
and this may cause trouble.

So it is better to split the work into small time based chunks, because
that's something we know, and we should avoid surprise to start the
distribution.

Let's not forget the main issue is to provide ISO's through Mageia
Community groups to potential users who cannot get ISO's from their slow
connection. Some people cannot afford to have their telephone busy with
a download lasting for a day or so.

This issue is also about providing an ISO to users with no connection to
the internet. This issue is NOT about people who have high speed
connection to the internet

In these cases, the idea is that the local Mageia Community group could
supply an ISO with hopefully all updates to the new user.

&gt;<i> Let's not forget that a new ISO each month will require more disk
</I>&gt;<i> space on server!
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Differences behind these &quot;Update Packs&quot; and Caldron can be that
</I>&gt;<i> MUP will be secure and tested regular updates, and Caldron not,
</I>&gt;<i> right? So, if MUP will be adopted, I suggest put ISOs on server
</I>&gt;<i> by two months, after this they will be deleted.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Of curse, if local communities assume this work, disk space will
</I>&gt;<i> not be a issue and Mageia will can put in its website a
</I>&gt;<i> disclaimer that they're not responsable by that 3rd party ISOS
</I>&gt;<i> and recommend official ISOS for production environment.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>Hi Andr&#233;

I would find this counter-productive.

I am just curious. As I am new to all of this.

When I install Mandriva, I download the ISO from the Mandriva site, then
after the install, I go to Google, Google &quot;Easy URPMI&quot; and install the
official repositories and the PLF repositories. I then do an &quot;update&quot;.
On Mandriva 2010.1 there are now almost 450 updated that come through.

Now, do these updates come from Mandriva? If yes, are these updates not
tested in the same way as the ISO packages? If yes, would it not be
possible to construct and ISO with the &quot;official updates&quot; already
applied? If yes, would it not make sense that Mandriva stand behind this
product with the updates? If yes, then would the Communities be able to
offer these to people as official ISO's from Mandriva?

Note that you could then just replace the &quot;Mandriva&quot; name with the
&quot;Mageia&quot; name.

Marc

nouvelle invit&#233;e, Anne Nicolas, Bonjour
Anne Nicolas - Bonjour
AN - Tout &#224; fait
PN - on se rappelle de Mandriva, moi j'avais quitt&#233; Mandriva dans ma t&#234;te &#224;
bien ce que &#231;a allait donner. Expliquez nous un petit peu ce qui s'est pass&#233;
On estimait
d&#233;cid&#233; de forker, c'est &#224; dire de reprendre la distribution Mandriva Linux &#224;
distribution
PN- Alors Mageia &#231;a va &#234;tre une association loi 1901 donc &#224; but non lucratif ?
fait la force d'une distribution c'est la capacit&#233; de sa communaut&#233;
AN - oui ce serait bien
tas de service comme du support, du consulting, du d&#233;veloppement, de mani&#232;re &#224;
pour &#233;ventuellement payer des gens qui vont de fa&#231;on permanente travailler &#224;
PN - Parfait, on esp&#232;re avoir apporter notre petite contribution, bonne chance
dans ce projet
AN - merci
AN - mageia.org
PN - Anne Nicolas merci beaucoup
AN - Merci

</I>
google translate to english:

Philippe Nieuwbourg - Hello everyone, welcome to the TV set of open
world forum, we will now turn to another topic with our
new guest Anne Nicolas, Hello
Anne Nicolas - Hello
PN - So you work for a community called Mageia
AN - Absolutely
PN - But then there are our listeners are saying &quot;but never heard Mageia
speaking, what is it that the promotion of this new thing &quot;is a Mageia
fork of Mandriva
AN - quite
PN - it remembers Mandriva, Mandriva I had left in my head
a time when there were many financial difficulties, it was not
well what it was going to give. Tell us a little bit what happened
and what made you want to create this Mageia fork.
AN - This fork Mageia came a whole lot of uncertainties that reside in
Mandriva, I was myself employed by a subsidiary of Mandriva. It was felt
there had been 12 years of tremendous work performed on this distribution and
need to sustain this effort and we wanted to abstract from the presence
a company that had high and low economic level and we
decided to fork, ie resume distribution Mandriva Linux
one point from a copy simply because the license allows
and assembling a new project from there and only Community
within an association and the project is called Mageia
PN - so it's very fashionable because ultimately what you have done
people from the MySQL community did at the time of acquisition by Oracle, they
accepted the takeover by Sun, they have not accepted the takeover by Oracle,
we
learned yesterday that the OpenOffice community was doing the same thing
too because they do not agree with the direction of Oracle
So finally for those who do not know where all these terms, a
Forking is that you can resume the original source code
and create for the moment exactly the same thing, a true copy
?
AN - altogether, it does not reinvent the wheel, since I
mentioned earlier, we believe many technology integrated with
Mandriva Linux, we think it's really a strong point, but
it would work differently in the development of future
distribution
PN-Mageia So it'll be a 1901 association therefore non-profit?
AN - quite,
PN - built around the community, developers in fact, it is
community developers who are members of the association?
AN - then the members of the association will overlap with the full scope of
that affect people directly or indirectly to a distribution. It will be
developers, people who are packaging software, testers
translators, but also because today what users
The strength of a distribution is the ability of its community
users to promote the distribution so they have a
part quite predominant and essential in the association.
PN - So it begs the question why an association. You think
today is the best way to work together on a project
like this?
NA - found that the values of freedom today are that it can be
a little demanding on the necessity of sharing the sustainability of the
software,
etc.. and given the history and challenges of the time
Mandriva has been estimated that a community project was more appropriate and
the association is only there to regulate the use of resources
organization, so yes there is a community project but
organized in a lasting way.
PN - At the same time we must live, you were employed by a company that
working on Mandriva, you may have wanted to find a job and
back wages
AN - yes it would be nice
PN - it must be that all that great, how is what generates the income
fully associative structure?
AN - then the association is one thing, it produces a product that
Mageia which is called a distribution, we can consider a perfectly
commercial structure that will act in the periphery of the association and
will
based on the distribution called Mageia and will offer a whole
lots of service as support, consulting, development, thereby
help the company take this product has tremendous community
strength and integrate it into its array of solutions it may have.
PN - So now you're faced with a number of needs
urgent first need we will try to answer them all is to make
a bit of noise around Mageia because nobody knows.
AN - Nobody knows the outdoors in the little world of open source
I admit that we were very pleasantly surprised by the return because not
Mandriva only the present community has reacted to the announcement and
acceded but also because people using Mandrake at the time and
returning because he believes it is a little more to their
expectation that they and their vision of an open source distribution
PN - Be careful what is called the navel syndrome which
that people who know you and you know how difficult it is to
ensure that those who do not know you have the reflex to go
see Mageia rather because he must say things very clear shot of you
become a little competition from Mandriva?
AN-quite
PN - How is what you do to try to promote this
new brand, because it costs money as all that?
AN - is finally starting very small since the initiative was made very
short time, we launched an appeal for donations which currently meets
extremely well, we had solutions to enable us to host
our entire infrastructure, and we will try to sustain it in
companies adhering to the association, and finally it becomes
account that there are many users who understand that the
Free software is not necessarily free and that I can to support the
distribution rather than put a little money every month by
example since I know that this money will be used so
transparent and maintaining a number of value. We have many
returns on that front.
PN - And do you think that you will generate enough money
eventually pay people who will permanently work
distribution?
NA - Immediate not within the Association, cons in
a business structure that offer services can be more
Traditional here we can actually generate income and that income
may possibly be used to fund developments
additional distribution
PN - Very good transition, is what you have already thought about it
should evolve within Mageia that it continues to meet
required? At the same time Mandriva was in trouble for some time that
therefore may be missing a bit of development, is what you want
do new things?
AN - So yes, there are plenty of things we want to do lots of things.
Among others there is a huge strength is the control center, the
Linux Control Center and now it's to change the
rejuvenate because it's true that it is a little older and then
Why not move towards architectures that are increasingly
used as shelves for example, and can also switch to
openness to services like cloud, etc.. so all that they are
guidelines that will define in the coming weeks.
PN - You have a real functioning associations, participatory?
AN - quite,
PN - you will meet regularly?
AN - While meeting a little bit special as they will
because the virtual community Mageia is international, ie
it's a lot in Europe, South America, so in these cases we do
can not do real meetings, the fact remains that these are people who are
accustomed to working in that way, remote, so yes it will
meetings, as each interest group, we will have a board to manage
the association to make a strategic decision, especially so many
communication, perhaps what we missed.
PN - Okay, we hope to have made our small contribution, good luck
in this project
AN - thank you
PN - we will continue elsewhere if we want to know more the website is
AN - mageia.org
PN - thank you very much Anne Nicolas
AN - Thanks
