>Backports are often not even tested by the person building the rpm.

That does not sound good, but regardless :

It should not include backports, only updates

> > What difference is there between someone who installs from the original
> > release CD and then applies updates vs. installing from a CD where the
> > updates are already included?
>
> In the first case, you can roll back the update. If all you've got is
> two ISOs, and you're unfamiliar enough with CLI rpm to be using ISOs to
> begin with, you're screwed unless you reinstall (or kept the old image,
> which newbies are unlikely to do).

I hope updates are checked carefully enough as they are passed to every normal
user doing updates. So i believe the average updated package should be
better than release version.

Actually, the big install base could be used to *increase* the quality of
updated versions over the release version:
If users notice problems with an update: avoid it in the updated ISO.
(That also mean updates newer than a few days should never enter the updated
iso)

Practically, at Mageia the automatic thingy gathers all updates except the
last few days, then some are manually removed if ther is any problems, then
some dependency checks, iso build, light test, release.
