I know about the "main" use case of easyurpmi, from 2-3years of daily

"PLF" won't be in the same thread in a lot of cases.

Whether you're typical or atypical, I leave that to you.

Using easyurpmi to just add the official repositories in Mandriva is
an "atypical" use case, not the regular/main use case, given the fact
there's already an integrated, installed by default, tool to do the
job.

Sure, it's good to have an easy way to add the repos on a headless
server, but I think users running headless servers are cli-savvy
enough to know how to use urpmi.addmedia, (with help of
http://mirrors.mageia.org/distrib , it becomes a matter of

> easyurpmi very convenient and not just for plf. I guess I didn't realize how
> atypical I was.

Easyurpmi, as I said in the past, suffer from various problems :

- it is centralized. It is where people fighted to get included or not. Every
group in the past forked ( some without any attribution ) the software to be
listed as repository for their version, because the original maintainer refused
to list every possible variations of every random rpm repositories. Despites having wrote
docs on .urpmi-media file on the wiki, people prefered to reuse easyurpmi out of
some form of cargo culting ( until easyurpmi decided to adopt the system ).

This caused some frictions in the community, and some divisions due to X instances of the software.

- the code could have been much better. Olivier wrote it and he was not a php coder, and
neither is Phillipe, the current maintainer. I think that the translation system is
primitive and prone to problem. No one seemed to be motivated to rewrite, despites
people fixing various problem.

- the core of the system was still "here is a website that a new user cannot find by
itself, that will give command that he doesn't understand, and that he need to type as root,
after asking question that didn't made much sense for him". That's bad on many levels :
 - difficult to find for a new user.
 - asking to type command as root first, and later "click on a link in your browser and type after your
admin password", which is IMHO quite bad from giving wrong habits to people.
 - asking lots of questions, ( fixed later by using a simplified mode, that use rpmdrake or
that fail silently )

There is also some issue like "it requires a web browser" ( which is highly problematic when you
are in a datacenter, setting up a server ). And "it doesn't use ssl" ( which is rather bad for a site that give you
basically software sources ). This one could be fixed, but that's quite curious that no one
thought of it before. Maybe people do not care about security, and about the content of a file that end
to be read by a software running as root.

The discoverability issues still exist and could not be fixed because of the nature of PLF/Mandriva.
The bad habits given to users is a direct consequence of the way it work. The power struggle
part too is inherent to the system, and this would become worst if there is a official instance
on Mageia servers.

Since the discoverability issue should be fixed by simply having tainted disabled by default and maybe
some popup whatever to enable it, I see no reason to suffer from the others problems (
bad habits, power struggle ). People can install a clone of easyurpmi if they want, but I will
oppose on having it on our servers, on having anything like this labelled as official, and
would recommend to people to not deploy it.

I haven't used EasyUrpmi, but I used the other (similar) web tool

My reason was not to add PLF or any other repo (MUD or other). My main

get connected to a very slow mirror or even to one which was not
uptodate without urpmi being able to switch to another mirror during

Not liking the %MIRRORLIST system is precisely why I kept using easyurpmi.
I could of course have typed out the pathways for my favorite sites, but
it's easier to let easyurpmi generate them and then substitute via drag and
drop the first part of the path for the site I want (not one of the ones

Yes, I know that but it's not the point here. I sure know how to add a
mirror to my /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg using vi, I sure know how to add a
mirror using 'urpmi.addmedia', and I sure know how to add a mirror
using "Add" in the media manager in MCC. But still I normally use this
web tool because 1) I don't have to care for typos and 2) it's soooo
convenient.

The benefit of this tool (I'm referring to
http://www.mandrivauser.de/smarturpmi/ here) is
 - I see the current state of the mirrors in the list (including last
sync run, checked several times a day), so I can avoid mirrors which
can not be reached or are not uptodate;
 - instead of having to look up the address and the location of the
synthesis list and then copy it into a field in the media manager
(which is a sure cause for typos) I just have to mark all
media/mirrors I want to add, then click on a button and a script is

I used easyurpmi for a while, mainly to add PLF sources, or to specify a
specific mirror when there was some mirroring problems in MDV (hdlist
not synced with repository content for instance).

As noted previously, the PLF issue does not hold for MGA.

It is probably worth improving the way the current media manager is
working than add yet another tool to the distrib.

We could have for instance checkboxes when importing media sources with:

- select mirror: by default let the media manager find a mirror for you,
else select one in a list
- include tainted: by default disable access to tainted repository. Warn
the user about the content of those repositories.

The main point is that people often do not know about the media manager.
Maybe a button to that tool directly in the update app would give it
more visibility, instead of looking into it on the package manager menu.
Or maybe it should be an app on its own.

Yes, as I said, as soon as the system provides a functioning error
handling in case of slow or outdated or even not reachable mirrors,
there will be no need for other tools. Until this is the not the case,
there is the need for such a tool.
(This has been the unchanged state of the issue for a long time,
bugreport at Mandriva existing for a long time without any change).

Anyhow, I'm not asking for such a tool as SmartUrpmi to be set up at
mageia.org if there are technical/security issues.
But I am sure we will have it online at other places soon because
people will see the need.

> >
> >>
> >> My reason was not to add PLF or any other repo (MUD or other). My
> main
> >> reason was my dislike of the %MIRRORLIST system of Mandriva, you
> could
> >> get connected to a very slow mirror or even to one which was not
> >> uptodate without urpmi being able to switch to another mirror during
> >> one session (a known bug).
> >
> > Same here, I *never* managed to upgrade the distribution, without
> > using easyurpmi with manual mirror selection (the upgrade tool
> just removed
> > the existing sources and always failed to add new ones).
> >
> > Bye
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
> Daniel
>
>
> Well, it is "an app on its own", just look at Mageia Control Center.
>

I mean with an entry in the system/administration menu, as for other
package related tools.

I think this is an good idea.
I think an other problem is the replacement of the proprietary drivers (I
had a prob with nvidia96)

Another point the the automatic for setting the repos.

Normally I install first from dvd, reboot, add repos and the do the update.
This seems not good for the upgrade.
Because without updating during the upgrade there are no repos set (only
cd-rom)

The repos should be set independent from update during installation.

What hapens with plf repos? (I think each normal system has them)

The routine for setting the repos should look for plf and then activate
tainted.

Perhaps generate an automatic "urpmi -qa | mdv /plf)" to get a standard file
for missing packages.
So everyone can send it to mageia.org.

In the evening a will test an upgrage of an komplete 2010.2 (with plf, some
muldimedia stuff, proprietary GeForce) on an KDE x86_64 system.
I think rather near by an enviroments of an simple user.

I've also listed the requirements: :
- a filter option to select only mirrors with tainted repos for those

- urpmi/rpmdrake being able to check the selected mirror for
availability and uptodate status before using the mirror (a MUST HAVE)
- ability of urpmi/rpmdrake to switch to another mirror if the
availability and/or uptodate status is not given (a MUST HAVE)
- option to switch the mirror during a session if connection speed is
too slow (compared to other known mirrors) (a NICE TO HAVE)

Yes, really! I never tried this one because in Mandriva my
main/favourite/fastest/closest mirror was not on the official mirror
list (another story).. But this list is not showing any information

Ok, so then this part of the case is closed, of course. Pls take my

> >> My reason was not to add PLF or any other repo (MUD or other). My main
> >> reason was my dislike of the %MIRRORLIST system of Mandriva, you could
> >> get connected to a very slow mirror or even to one which was not
> >> uptodate without urpmi being able to switch to another mirror during
> >> one session (a known bug).
> >
> > Same here, I *never* managed to upgrade the distribution, without
> > using easyurpmi with manual mirror selection (the upgrade tool just
> > removed the existing sources and always failed to add new ones).
> >
> > Bye
>
>
>
>
>
>
>
> Daniel
I think this is a very valuable discussion and a need for it showing by the
number of posts.

people often do not know about the media manager:
I was one of 'em. Where is it? In Mageia, Control Cender, Configure media, I
didn't know a way to add a medium by hand. If I click on the add button I can
add either an <update sources only> and/or a <full set of sources> and what
it does, it adds a $mirrorlist as source, I do not know or have control where
those are. I have to go to -> file and then yes, I get a list. This is not very
obvious since there is an <add> button.

So instead I used easyurpmi old interface (which shows a lot of errors) and
then copied and paste the command into a konsole.

Maybe by adding the options to show when clicking on the add button would
provide a good option, but I think it is is too late for Mageia 1
