If you are looking for a big and scalable solution, suitable for any case,
and you have a dedicated server, bacula is certainly the best out there. But
it is also very, very non-end-user-friendly and requires lots of config file
editing to get started. But when you master it, it will save you life at
each step and will do magic with your backups.

If you are thinking about simple backup solution for some common directories
(say, /etc/, /home/, ...), there are drakbackup and draksnapshot in
Mandriva/Mageia. Each has its peculiarities, but they do the job fine in
most cases.

If you want to go deeper and manage your own backups and syncronization, you
cannot escape much from rsync, unison, rsnapshot and tar - and its variants.
There are plenty of alternatives and UIs for each of them.

If you are thinking on hard-disk backup solutions, and system imaging, there
are many options to choose from - ghost4linux, dd+rdiff :), dump/restore,
unirecovery (but this one is still proprietary I think, and is mostly
available for OEMs), and now carbono [1], which is developed by the same
guys (me included, but without much time to play with it unfortunately) who
developed unirecovery application at mstech.

And finally, if you just want to backup some subset of files in a
space-efficient manner,
<A HREF="http://students.ceid.upatras.gr/~sxanth/ungit.htmlgives">http://students.ceid.upatras.gr/~sxanth/ungit.htmlgives</A> a nice
overview about how to use git for that. Basically, it can be
done with the following trivial script:

#!/bin/sh
for backup in /home/eugeni /etc/ /var/config; do
 pushd $backup
 git add .
 git commit -a -m &quot;Backed up on %d.%m.%y&quot;
 git push server
 popd
done

(Of course, you must setup initial git infra with 'git init', and setup
remote branches for each of backup'able directories, but I'll skip those
instructions as they are available in any git tutorial - just yell if you
need some help with that).

Besides those tricks, there are also hundreds of other backup applications
and solutions. I tried to describe the most common scenarios, but it all
depends on your needs of course.

P.S.: Real hackers don't backup configs and applications, they commit their
settings upstream and just reinstall the packages when needed :).

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> backed-up to a removable hard-drive.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> If you are looking for a big and scalable solution, suitable for any case,
</I>&gt;<i> and you have a dedicated server, bacula is certainly the best out there. But
</I>&gt;<i> it is also very, very non-end-user-friendly and requires lots of config file
</I>&gt;<i> editing to get started. But when you master it, it will save you life at
</I>&gt;<i> each step and will do magic with your backups.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> If you are thinking about simple backup solution for some common directories
</I>&gt;<i> (say, /etc/, /home/, ...), there are drakbackup and draksnapshot in
</I>&gt;<i> Mandriva/Mageia. Each has its peculiarities, but they do the job fine in
</I>&gt;<i> most cases.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> If you want to go deeper and manage your own backups and syncronization, you
</I>&gt;<i> cannot escape much from rsync, unison, rsnapshot and tar - and its variants.
</I>&gt;<i> There are plenty of alternatives and UIs for each of them.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> If you are thinking on hard-disk backup solutions, and system imaging, there
</I>&gt;<i> are many options to choose from - ghost4linux, dd+rdiff :), dump/restore,
</I>&gt;<i> unirecovery (but this one is still proprietary I think, and is mostly
</I>&gt;<i> available for OEMs), and now carbono [1], which is developed by the same
</I>&gt;<i> guys (me included, but without much time to play with it unfortunately) who
</I>&gt;<i> developed unirecovery application at mstech.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> And finally, if you just want to backup some subset of files in a
</I>&gt;<i> space-efficient manner, <A HREF="http://students.ceid.upatras.gr/~sxanth/ungit.html">http://students.ceid.upatras.gr/~sxanth/ungit.html</A>
</I>&gt;<i> gives a nice overview about how to use git for that. Basically, it can be
</I>&gt;<i> done with the following trivial script:
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> #!/bin/sh
</I>&gt;<i> for backup in /home/eugeni /etc/ /var/config; do
</I>&gt;<i> &#160; pushd $backup
</I>&gt;<i> &#160; git add .
</I>&gt;<i> &#160; git commit -a -m &quot;Backed up on %d.%m.%y&quot;
</I>&gt;<i> &#160; git push server
</I>&gt;<i> &#160; popd
</I>&gt;<i> done
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> (Of course, you must setup initial git infra with 'git init', and setup
</I>&gt;<i> remote branches for each of backup'able directories, but I'll skip those
</I>&gt;<i> instructions as they are available in any git tutorial - just yell if you
</I>&gt;<i> need some help with that).
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Besides those tricks, there are also hundreds of other backup applications
</I>&gt;<i> and solutions. I tried to describe the most common scenarios, but it all
</I>&gt;<i> depends on your needs of course.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> P.S.: Real hackers don't backup configs and applications, they commit their
</I>&gt;<i> settings upstream and just reinstall the packages when needed :).

Eugeni,

I was using drakbackup in Mandriva for the backups to the server, but it
isn't available on Mageia. I was saving the files to a mounted nfs
share. Each computer has it's own directory on the share. I was using
DAR to archive the backup directories on the server and save them on a
removable hard-drive, which was kept at a separate location. This is
only for our computers at home, 3, and not a business.

I am going to take a closer look at draksnapshot later on. I guess I
just looked at the name '*snapshot' and figured it was basically an
image of the entire system and not just specific folders and files.

I added the requirements below for completeness.

My current requirements/preferences for the desktops are as follows:
1) Ability to include only specific directories and subdirectories.
2) Ability to easily exclude specific directories.
3) Saves compressed copies in easy to use archive formats (tar, dar,
zip, etc)
4) Ability to do incremental backups
5) Ability to schedule backups
6) Ability to easily get files out of a backup using a livecd and any
computer
 - I should not need a database running to get files
 - I should not need a full Linux install

My current requirements/preferences for the server's backup folders are
as follows:
1) Saves compressed copies in easy to use archive formats (tar, dar,
zip, etc)
2) Ability to do incremental backups

I will probably just continue to use DAR to do the backups from the
server to the removable hard-drive. I created a statically linked
version of DAR and text-mode only Truecrypt. The external drive is
encrypted because it lives off-site.

Thank you,

Jeff

I have a couple of questions on your ratings though.

1) Why did you eliminate Drakbackup?

2) Why did you eliminate DAR? I almost eliminated it from my current

struggled through it until I understood them. They are still a pain in

 OIC. Interesting!
I've been steering clear of 64-bit installs, until there a less
problems with 64-bit apps.

Pro tem I have converted to desktop kernels via urpmi.

I still think the installter should have a 'server v. desktop' choice.

It is quite normal and useful to have a 64-bit kernel with only 32-bit

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> Having installed Mageia-1 (from DVD), I find it has installed the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> server kernels, rather than the desktop kernels.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> Presumably that's because my PC has 4GB RAM, but - on this 1-user system
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> - I would have preferred the desktop kernels to be installed.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> Did I miss an installation option, to choose server v. desktop?

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> If not, could the installer be given such an option - perhaps in

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> That would avoid having to swap kernels with:

</I>&gt;<i> I raised this one on the Mandriva list. I was told that it was because I had
</I>&gt;<i> a 32-bit version installed on a 64-bit capable machine. Sure enough, when I
</I>&gt;<i> installed the 64-bit version, I got the desktop kernel by default.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Doug.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>Well, that explains it. Mandriva has been insisting on installing the
server kernel since I bought this Sempron 3100+ cpu/motherboard combo
from a recycler on Ebay a couple of years ago, even though the
motherboard supports a maximum of 2GB of DDR RAM. (I chose it because I
needed a new mobo, was, as always, strapped for cash, and wanted to use
my existing RAM modules.) With Mandriva, I switched to the desktop
kernel manually, but with Mageia I decided to stick with the server
kernel just to see how it worked out. Frankly, I see little if any
difference in speed or operation from a user's perspective between the
two 32-bit kernels on my machine, so when I finally get the time to
switch to Mageia as my production install I'll continue with the server
kernel.

I looked into installing the 64-bit version of Mandriva when I
discovered my cpu was 64-bit capable, but concluded at the time that
there was no real advantage on this machine since the maximum RAM is
less than 4 GB. So far, I've been happy with that, but in light of
recent development, is there any reason why I should reconsider?

Jeff,

This table that I organized, I just listed the packages of &quot;Mageia 1&quot; and
&quot;Mandriva 2010.2&quot;

The packages that have &quot;---- no ----&quot; I not found in the official repository of
&quot;Mageia 1&quot; (default repository: Media 1, 3, 11, 13, 21 and 23).

The package &quot;Drakbackup&quot; is default in &quot;Mandriva 2010.2&quot;, but i didn't find in
official repository of &quot;Mageia 1&quot;,

The same happened with the packages:

4 - TimeVault ---------- no ----------------
2 - AMANDA - ---------- no ----------------
7 - DAr - Disk Archiver - ---------- no ----------------

I'm using Luckybackup because it is easy to use, very user-friendly.
The others I don't know, I think they are complexes to configure, as Bacula, as
commented by Eugeni Dononov.

The table only lists, I didn't evaluate the backup software.

Fortunately, Eugeni Dononov presented us with an excellent evaluation of the
various backup software.

Maurice, the reason given was memory, as mentioned by a couple of others. I
would have to check the thread again, but the thrust of it was:

With a 32-bit distro on a 64-bit computer, the only kernel that can handle
your RAM properly is the server kernel. You would actually be worse off with
the desktop kernel. I queried whether the server kernel would be slower, and
was told that it wasn't. I haven't tried to verify any of this.

So, if you want to stay with 32-bit (I went back to it) the server kernel is
your best choice.

<PRE>I am using BackupPC, no problems. Original reasons for my choice:
 - allows to back up a mix of Linux and Windows systems
 - is well supported and has a lively ML where advice can be sought
 - is easy to maintain and operate

The user interface / control-facilities are nice, a good compromise
between simplicity and choice of features, restoring (selecting sources,
getting them) is easy.

As already said, installation is not quite easy - but there is
experience in the Mageia and Mandriva community (though, documentation
of Mageia-specific issues has not yet made its way into the wiki or
README files). Installation on windows machines is yet somewhat more
complicated - you need Cygwin to make rsync run on the windows platform,
but again, there is good documentation. In case you opt for installing
BackupPC and need documentation/advice, shout (to get started, a look at
Magaia bugzilla #600 might be helpful)

incitement for a flamefest. I do have only limited time, and if all that time
is being spent in reading emails...

Now i easily can and _have_ ignored this thread (mark thread as read); i admit
i'm not really planning on doing this kind of blocking atm, and i do think
that given a few more new threads by this person and the problem will have
sorted itself (ie: no more people replying to it), and i also admit that my
