If there were overwhelming support for the kind of thing RMS

> >
> > But using only Linux because it is "common" for
> > uninformed people is simplistic ; as we say in French :
> > « l'enfer est pavé de bonnes intentions »
> > « the road to hell is paved with good intentions »
> >
> > Furthermore someone (like me and some others perhaps ) can be
> > interesting in « popular education » (éducation populaire) and
> > relations between free software, free sciences free...
> > Oversimplification of the word is always oversimplifaction of the
> > concept. Even if it seems to be easier I see that as a fault.
>
> I have seen the history of GNU and Linux and their "marriage" (because
> the GNU people did not have any simple and free kernel for their
> software). So, from my point of view there's a good chance that Linux
> could have grown to a full operating system even without the GNU
> project.

The gnu project provided lots of software, some quite unavoidable like a
compiler, a standard library, or stuff like screen, gettext and slightly
low level tools ( binutils, coreutils, etc ).

> On the other side nobody could tell if the GNU project would
> have survived without Linux. Both thoughts are speculations, of
> course.
>
> But would a GNU/Linux naming policy not neglect the merits of all the
> other projects who actually made the "Gnu/Linux" system a real usable
> package? Imagine a distribution only supplying Linux and what remains
> from the GNU project (especially Emacs) - would any user actually use
> it (except developpers and "tech freaks")?

I doubt developers would use something without gcc ( granted, there is
pcc or llvm ) and without a libc ( granted again, someone could use a
alternative like dietlibc etc )

> I serioously doubt that
> this kind of package would never have made it out of the university
> and research labs environment, let alone conquer the business world.

Some people did it : http://www.skarnet.org/poweredby.html

( and some would say that this is almost done for http://openbsd.org/ ,
since the compiler is near 1.0 :

> without sound.
> PulseAudio is enabled, but when I start pavucontrol it tries to
> connect to pulseaudio and stays like that, it can not connect to the
> soundserver, so it seems.
>
> Kmix shows no channels at all.
> Audio configuration shows HDA Intel (ALC269 Analog)
>
> As all this works in my desktop machine it may not be a bug, just a
> bad configuration

Yo,

Feel free to hit me up on IRC to debug (it's often easier), but in the
meantime:

ps aux | grep pulse
xprop -root | grep -i pulse | grep -vi cookie
PULSE_LOG=99 pactl stat
pacmd ls

If pulse is not running, then trying:
pulseaudio -vvvvv
would help too.

Cheers!

Col

Taken from the front page of the openSuSe website:
openSUSE is a free and Linux-based operating system for your PC, Laptop or
Server. You can surf the web, manage your e-mails and photos, do office
work, play videos or music and have a lot of fun!
No mention of GNU anywhere.

Honestly I agree that GNU should be acknowledged but trying to change the
meaning on Linux in the here and now to what is was supposed to be 18
years ago is not a losing battle it's one that has already been lost!

i have this card internet
r8169 : Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.|RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller [NETWORK_ETHERNET] (rev: 03)
And with Mageia i did nt have any problem since yesterday that i dont have internet connexion

To be connected i have to execute this commande:
ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off

Before (mandriva) i had this setting:

i created this file:
/etc/modprobe.d/r8169.conf

with this content:
# turn off autonegotiation on the r8169 ethernet driver
install r8169 /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install r8169 && /usr/sbin/ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off

The problem is that now it does nt work and i have to run the command "ethtool -s eth0 autoneg off" manually

Is any other setting that i can to do have internet connexion on every boot, or to execute this command on boot

>
> i also have the snd_hda_intel driver

I found some new infos:

1. At installation time one of the needed libs is not available for
sound configuration (it is not on the install medium, only on ftp
tree). So when I try to configure sound in the installation summary
the configuration ends with an error (see bugzilla). But this can't be
the reason because it's working on my desktop machine where I used the
same installation medium.

2. lspci say that there are 2 sound devices available:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corp 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset High
Definition Audio (rev 06)
02:00.1 Audio device: nVidia Corp High Definition Audio Controller (rev a1)

But I may better wait for Alpha 2 - after the latest updates somehow
my whole installation is going down the drain:
 - opening a console window and typing 'mc' leads to a freeze of the
complete system freeze (not even SysReq keys working) - reproducible.
 - opening vlc, choosing "File - Open file" leads to a crash of vlc -
reproducible
 - clicking on starter icons in the task bar (like Firefox) does not
start anything (only occasional, after logout/login it works again.
 - installing the proprietary nvidia driver works, splash screen shows
the beta driver - after latest update I get the message that there is
no proprietary driver available, starting with free driver.

So I guess it makes not much sense to go on hunting for the cause of
"no sound" before Alpha 2 is out.
Hopefully these problems will be gone because this is the machine I
will have to use at our stand in Chemnitz in 2 weeks to demonstrate
mageia! :(

I looked into rpmdrake and just for a chance I searched for "pulse" -
task-pulseaudio was not installed. I marked it for installation and 17
packages were installed as dependencies! I also recognized that
/etc/pulse/system.pa was completely missing.
After a reboot I had to make a change in the speaker configuration of
phonon (via KDE config tool) and Ho! - Then there was sound! :)

Looks like something at installation time went wrong (see point #1 in
my previous mail).
