</I>
It is good so far.

(And maybe we could add LXDE or other light environment as option like KDE and
GNOME for a noob that want to try put life in his old computer but is scared
off from customised mode)

But maybe there should be less packages included in the 2 or 3 complete
desktop alternatives, and instead after first desktop bootup open some noob
friendly program chooser/installer in accordance with Juergens part 2) above?

But, it IS convenient for most users to have at least Firefox by default, and
this and that.. have to put the limit somewhere. Maybe the user should
choose office suite afterwards, email program, another browser, and be
presented simple methods to select CD burnig, music player, video editing,
gaming etc.

But, that raises next question: should Mageia propose a short list of programs
we propose, and how should thoose be chosen? Then maybe user thinks, oh is
there so few program and not this progam X that I like, although Mageia do
have it, but he need to use the full installer to see them...

Need to be crafted so it without clutter give noobs a clear wiew, but at the
same time encourages and makes possible to use the whole repos when he knows
what he is after.

Maybe just simply add a &quot;proposed programs&quot; section to drakrpm, and make it
open it by default, and make drakrpm start upon desktop boot until user cliks
a box to have it not to. So the user get the best served in his face,
without limiting his choices, nor he need to know yet another app, and we
need not do much development for it.

BTW, it should configure normal repos automatically, and it should be more
noob friendly to add, with exlanations, and a button from drakrpm dialog.

Right - that is OK for me and for you, and we can use things like
drax/package_list.pl if we do want to do fancy customisation scripts -
but that is not the issue I wanted to discuss.

In (part of) this thread a reflection is made on how to address
customers with specific &quot;target&quot; profiles, and on the opportunity to
shape the system for helping so targetted users get the system they want
- on what profiles should be considered.

The discussion also made the point that this might help to increase the
attractivity of Mageia for new users - particular those with an
MS-windows culture. Such users are ready to say &quot;I want games&quot; or &quot;I
need engineering tools&quot;, but they do not want to get involved with first
finding and then adding bits; if they &quot;have a profile&quot; the minimum KDE
or Gnome installation will - and should - not be enough for them (and,
btw, at least for KDE, the, &quot;minimum&quot; configuration is far from a
minimum configuration, it rather looks like a configuration concocted
for &quot;the typical KDE user&quot; as seen by some non-user).

The question I asked is how this is possible without burrying such
configuration issues into the system installation software and keep
things simple and flexible. Yes, the components you mention exist and do
not need to be re-created - the issue is whether they should / could be
wrapped up into a nice user interface that would help picking up the
suggestions made in this thread.

<PRE>The structure of packages as they are offered in the installer tries
somehow to address this issue. The affiliation of packages to groups and
sub-groups has been changed serveral times - an evident indication that
the need to change has already been perceived.

The problem with the existing concept is that it is part of the
installer and is not flexible enough, and that the primary criterium for
attributing packages to a group appears to be a &quot;how to sort&quot; question -
not the question how to make things easy for a user with a given profile
whose background is not that of a &quot;package-picker&quot;.

I think that the non-package-picker issue is important. All who
participate in this discussion have a long trained Linux mentality and
just relish having tens of different approaches to select from. Talking
about hooking new users means talking to people who have a different
education (I agree, they are doomed to end up being Linux-minded - but
at the moment they discover Linux they are not). That indicates:
approaches like lists of proposed programs are only second-best.

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> the system generation process, &quot;burned&quot; onto the installation media. Must
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> that be so? has this question already been discussed?
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> Naively, I see an alternative: cut package selection into 2 parts:
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> (1) have system installation start by configuring a minimum set of packages,
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> those that are strictly necessary to obtain a running system for the

</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> (2) install additional packages that customise the system to the profile

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> installation).
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> With the current installer you can select &quot;customize&quot; (instead of
</I>&gt;<i> selecting KDE or GNOME) and uncheck all the options there when you

</I>&gt;<i> - install/not-install X
</I>&gt;<i> - install/not-install suggested packages
</I>&gt;<i> - go with a really minimal system and not install even urpmi
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So, either it's a new user, he can select KDE or GNOME; or it's an
</I>&gt;<i> advanced/experienced user, he can deselect all the packages he wants,
</I>&gt;<i> and go with a very minimal system to begin with and then add the bits
</I>&gt;<i> and pieces he wants.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> [...]
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
BTW , this has already been taken up in previous threads and members
have come up with the same ideas. Some have suggested more windowing
choices or tailored installations in software just as you are
suggesting. The marketing team will also be looking into it as well and
your comments on this are important.

Some members, have suggested tailoring the &quot;Customize&quot; section where
there are already &quot;Games&quot;, &quot;Mail&quot; &quot;Server&quot; etc categories by added more
 such as (we have made a quick collection of these suggested in posts):

 * Gaming
 * Education
 o home
 o teacher
 o academic
 * Music
 * Video (+ Tv/online streaming)
 * Audio/Video editing
 * Graphics
 * Office
 * Visually impaired users (Braille (brltty), speech output (orca
etc.), magnification)
 * Full server
 o Business
 o Education
 o Development
 * Home mini-server
 o Document
 o Graphics
 o Music
 o Communications (telephony)

So far these are the suggestions that we have collected on the threads.
We could certainly add more if you think more should exist. Please
remember that these are only being collected at this point for possible
suggestions later.

<PRE>Cathegories are good.

One thing to note is that some programs may be visual in several cathegories.
Like OOo draw may be linked in both Office and Graphics
 (MSOffice users dont know OOo can draw)
And gcompri in both games and education
 (very few know gcompri at all, but my 4 year old son think it is both)

What i have seen as an obstacle for new users, is to get going with
post-install.

People are so very grown into the idea that they have to surf the net,
download manually, double click the file (... and then often not have a clue
how to get rid of it later...)

I think a icon &quot;How to manage programs&quot; on the desktop to a html page would be
good.

(And also one about how to connect to internet)

(both should be a local file in case internet is not up, but with a well
visible link which the user is suggested to choose; a link to a mageia wiki
page as we try to keep the wiki updated, and he can surf the wiki for more)

There it first briefly explains the idea of repositories.
What each contain. (and Link to how to add extra.)
How to start drakrpm and use it.
About the automatic and manual updating.
And (because drakrpm displays the question) explanations of orphan packages.

 And a link to advanced sections:
about dependencies
about meta tasks
about dkms

 I suggest also to talk about migration methods:
Import fonts
About *Office files
Browser links
How to use mail program to import from a windows mail program,
 ( or alternative technique such as upload using ISPs IMAP, whatever)
Maybe talk about useable sharing services on the net, like: DropBox, Evernote,
Operas Unite and shared links, etc

...And of course we should have a desktop icon taking the user to main Mageia
site and there link to wiki and forum :)

Yes and no.

For the purposes introduced in this thread categories are good, no doubt.

But what about the average home computer for a user who wants to do
all the internet tasks, some image editing, some vector graphics, some
office work (text, calculations), some communication (video chat),
listening to music, watching videos, etc. plus serving all the data to
his wife's Windows machine and plus playing the occasional game? This
is the average package selection in most home computers - i've never
seen a home computer which matches one single category, it's more
likely a mix of apps from all categories.
As these tasks are spread all over the categories the user will have
to install all categories (including all the stuff he does not
want/need) just to have those few apps he needs. Or he is back to
individual package selection which is fine for the advanced user but
which we want to avoid for the new/inexperienced user.

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> selecting KDE or GNOME) and uncheck all the options there when you

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> - install/not-install X
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> - install/not-install suggested packages
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> - go with a really minimal system and not install even urpmi
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> So, either it's a new user, he can select KDE or GNOME; or it's an
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> advanced/experienced user, he can deselect all the packages he wants,
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> and go with a very minimal system to begin with and then add the bits
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> and pieces he wants.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> It is good so far.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> (And maybe we could add LXDE or other light environment as option like KDE and
</I>&gt;<i> GNOME for a noob that want to try put life in his old computer but is scared
</I>&gt;<i> off from customised mode)
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
LXDE, as the default lightweight fallback DE, is installed by default
if you select KDE or GNOME :)

But if you want LXDE to be next to KDE and GNOME, then XFCE should
also be added... but that would be a bit cluttered, IMHO.

&gt;<i> But maybe there should be less packages included in the 2 or 3 complete
</I>&gt;<i> desktop alternatives, and instead after first desktop bootup open some noob
</I>&gt;<i> friendly program chooser/installer in accordance with Juergens part 2) above?
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
Well, you see, for a new user, in the first days, he probably doesn't
yet know what is what, so he's grateful to find stuff just work, (a
good text editor: kwrite, a terminal emulator: konsole, a familiar web
browser: firefox... etc). It'll take him me some time before he starts
to need to customise the system.

&gt;<i> But, it IS convenient for most users to have at least Firefox by default, and
</I>&gt;<i> this and that.. have to put the limit somewhere. &#160;Maybe the user should
</I>&gt;<i> choose office suite afterwards, email program, another browser, and be
</I>&gt;<i> presented simple methods to select CD burnig, music player, video editing,
</I>&gt;<i> gaming etc.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> But, that raises next question: should Mageia propose a short list of programs
</I>&gt;<i> we propose, and how should thoose be chosen? &#160;Then maybe user thinks, oh is
</I>&gt;<i> there so few program and not this progam X that I like, although Mageia do
</I>&gt;<i> have it, but he need to use the full installer to see them...
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Need to be crafted so it without clutter give noobs a clear wiew, but at the
</I>&gt;<i> same time encourages and makes possible to use the whole repos when he knows
</I>&gt;<i> what he is after.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Maybe just simply add a &quot;proposed programs&quot; section to drakrpm, and make it
</I>&gt;<i> open it by default, and make drakrpm start upon desktop boot until user cliks
</I>&gt;<i> a box to have it not to. &#160;So the user get the best served in his face,
</I>&gt;<i> without limiting his choices, nor he need to know yet another app, and we
</I>&gt;<i> need not do much development for it.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> BTW, it should configure normal repos automatically, and it should be more
</I>&gt;<i> noob friendly to add, with exlanations, and a button from drakrpm dialog.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
Yes, but I see &quot;proposed&quot; == rpm suggests; I don't see a new user
being able to make such decisions before he familiarises himself with
the system, only then can he start uninstalling what he thinks he
doesn't need.

Bug reports / suggestions to change default apps were usually
considered carefully and default apps do change if that bug report /
suggestion is reasonable....

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> And a &quot;normal&quot; or better: &quot;average&quot; user at home will need parts of

Thanks for the note Wobo.

Yup, if it were adopted, then I would hope that you could theoretically
tag more than one option as we do already.

</I>&gt;<i> Yes and no.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> For the purposes introduced in this thread categories are good, no doubt.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> But what about the average home computer for a user who wants to do
</I>&gt;<i> all the internet tasks, some image editing, some vector graphics, some
</I>&gt;<i> office work (text, calculations), some communication (video chat),
</I>&gt;<i> listening to music, watching videos, etc. plus serving all the data to
</I>&gt;<i> his wife's Windows machine and plus playing the occasional game? This
</I>&gt;<i> is the average package selection in most home computers - i've never
</I>&gt;<i> seen a home computer which matches one single category, it's more
</I>&gt;<i> likely a mix of apps from all categories.
</I>&gt;<i> As these tasks are spread all over the categories the user will have
</I>&gt;<i> to install all categories (including all the stuff he does not
</I>&gt;<i> want/need) just to have those few apps he needs. Or he is back to
</I>&gt;<i> individual package selection which is fine for the advanced user but
</I>&gt;<i> which we want to avoid for the new/inexperienced user.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
Hi Wobo:

I don't think this would be the intent of these categories, there would
of course be cross-category software but the user could certainly tag
more than one category than another.

There could even be some kind of information bubble for each category
detailing the type of software assigned to it.

Well, that's exactly what we have in Mandriva:

the form: defoliant_2.35.rpm. Install this if you need a defoliant. When
I see descriptions like this my first impulse is to wonder, Why did you

</I>&gt;<i> &gt; It gives a second desktop to fall back on, and guarantees all
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; dependencies for KDE or GNOME aps, provides a fall back method to adjust
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; setting such as font and such for desktop aps used in the other desktop,
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; and gives the newbe the ease of switching to the other desktop until
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; they decide which one they like. And installing both desktops is an easy
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; way to install all standard aps for both desktops, and that new standard
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; apps for the unused desktop is installed with desktop updates, so that
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; it's there if you need it. Just like I like to have several internet
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; browsers even though I rarely use the others. If one is giving you
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; trouble, you can try the other.
</I>&gt;<i> For fallback purpose, then you should get a light-weighted, but full
</I>&gt;<i> feature
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> DE, which is not GNOME/KDE's strength. Currently in FREE version, the
</I>&gt;<i> fallback
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> DE is LXDE, which does its job right and is really useful.
</I>
Excuse me, but in which case does people requires a fallback ?

Should we install nginx along apache to offer a fallback ? Should we
install another distribution along mandriva, to get a fallback ?
I do not think so, so why would a DE be so different on that matter ?

The only case I can see is when the regular DE is broke in the devel
version and this case do not really apply to users of stable release.

And installing 2 ( or more ) DEs will :
- double the QA work
- increase the load on mirror in case of updates ( since every default
user will get gnome and kde update )
- increase the installation time ( because you have more packages to
unpack )
- likely increase the complexity of the menu ( unless we decide that kde
software do not appear in gnome and vice versa ), which is turn is bad
for most users, especially those that do not know the distribution
- will likely provides a bad user experience when it come to program
association ( ie, what will be started when I click on a text file,
gedit, kate ? )

So to me, this is not really worth the tradeoff.

if we start using GUI-only solutions for administering the system (see
network-manager, system-config-printer etc), then you will *have to* fallback
to any DE just to be able to repair some bad system.
If, on the other hand, we keep using the Unix/Linux (rather than Windoze)
approach of easily editable text configs and cmdline tools, then a fallback is

I agree having a fallback. it is much easier to change any configuration in a

Fixing it in icewm was easier than on the command mode

then wouldn't it be better to have a way for kde to work when being too
broken ( ie, a safe mode, like windows and firefox ) ?

Because I doubt that people who are targeted by this feature of having a
2nd X session are also able to fix a kde session problem ( since the 3
examples people gave to me were KDE related ).

IE, if you know how to fix, tty can be enough, and if you don't know how
