> > If there are two packages, one in core and another in tainted, then
> > doesn't urpmi need a way to recognise that the tainted package is newer
> > than (an update to) the corresponding core package? I believe that this
> > is achieved in Mandriva, because plf is greater than mdv.
>
> That's abusing release tag and it work by pure chance ( ie, had the plf
> decided to be called the guillomovitch liberation front, it would not
> have worked ). And this is quite inflexible, since people will always
> have plf packages, leading to users adding some rpm in skip.list with a
> regexp.
>
> This doesn't make much sense to treat tainted rpm as update to core,
> this is not the same notion. But we cannot express this in urpmi for the
> moment, as this would requires some way to say "if you need to install
> something, prefer this source rather than this one".
>
> We can imagine a priority system, or we can simply say that if there is
> the same rpm on 2 media, we ask to the user ( except this would requires
> IMHO a better system than the current path based one to see what is in a
> rpm, but that's a rather long proposal to make ).
>
> But you are right this another set of issues to solve for dual life
> packages.

after sleeping on this, i've had this idea:

why don't we rename packages in tainted?
keeping them in the same name, perhaps has issues with search engines, (ie:
which version do you get?)

i proposed renaming packages in tainted,(but not the release tag).

would it be a good compromise if we named packages:

<orig_packagename>-tainted-<version>-<release> ?

the benefit of this could be adding an Obsoletes and Provides on the original
package with the identical version.

for building, i may have this solution:

%tainted(%_optional_feature1 %optional_feature2 %optional_feature3)

this would allow the buildbot to look for %tainted and if it does, it could
rebuild it for tainted and add the particulars itself. this would simplify the
whole plf/tainted thing easily. and since all 4 rpms are being built at the
same time, you have no srpm problem either.

WDYT?

>> this
>> > is achieved in Mandriva, because plf is greater than mdv.
>>
>> That's abusing release tag and it work by pure chance ( ie, had the
>> plf
>> decided to be called the guillomovitch liberation front, it would

>> always
>> have plf packages, leading to users adding some rpm in skip.list
>> with a
>> regexp.
>>
>> This doesn't make much sense to treat tainted rpm as update to core,
>> this is not the same notion. But we cannot express this in urpmi for

>> moment, as this would requires some way to say "if you need to
>> install
>> something, prefer this source rather than this one".
>>
>> We can imagine a priority system, or we can simply say that if there
>> is
>> the same rpm on 2 media, we ask to the user ( except this would
>> requires
>> IMHO a better system than the current path based one to see what is
>> in a
>> rpm, but that's a rather long proposal to make ).
>>
>> But you are right this another set of issues to solve for dual life
>> packages.
>
> after sleeping on this, i've had this idea:
>
> why don't we rename packages in tainted?
> keeping them in the same name, perhaps has issues with search
> engines, (ie:
> which version do you get?)

 with search engine ?
I can see the issue for support, yes, but search engine, no

> i proposed renaming packages in tainted,(but not the release tag).
>
> would it be a good compromise if we named packages:
>
> <orig_packagename>-tainted-<version>-<release> ?
>
> the benefit of this could be adding an Obsoletes and Provides on the
> original
> package with the identical version.

This could work, but I am not sure that a Obsoletes is required.

One problem with this idea is that it will ask to user lots of
 questions, and that's
something we should rather try to avoid ( any people who installed some
 java rpm will
 understand the issue ).

But it has the advantage of not requiring anything special on BS while
 providing the choice.

> for building, i may have this solution:
>
> %tainted(%_optional_feature1 %optional_feature2 %optional_feature3)
>
> this would allow the buildbot to look for %tainted and if it does,
> it could
> rebuild it for tainted and add the particulars itself. this would
> simplify the
> whole plf/tainted thing easily. and since all 4 rpms are being built
> at the
> same time, you have no srpm problem either.

A simple %define would do the trick, so that doesn't bring much.
And we can keep a list of package that should be compiled twice, that's
not the biggest problem to solve.

> >>
> >> > doesn't urpmi need a way to recognise that the tainted package is
> >>
> >> newer
> >>
> >> > than (an update to) the corresponding core package? I believe that
> >>
> >> this
> >>
> >> > is achieved in Mandriva, because plf is greater than mdv.
> >>
> >> That's abusing release tag and it work by pure chance ( ie, had the
> >> plf
> >> decided to be called the guillomovitch liberation front, it would
> >> not
> >> have worked ). And this is quite inflexible, since people will
> >> always
> >> have plf packages, leading to users adding some rpm in skip.list
> >> with a
> >> regexp.
> >>
> >> This doesn't make much sense to treat tainted rpm as update to core,
> >> this is not the same notion. But we cannot express this in urpmi for
> >> the
> >> moment, as this would requires some way to say "if you need to
> >> install
> >> something, prefer this source rather than this one".
> >>
> >>
> >
> >
>
>
> >
> >
> >
>
>
>
> But it has the advantage of not requiring anything special on BS while
> providing the choice.

if there is obsoletes, i don't think a question will be asked...

> > for building, i may have this solution:
> >
> > %tainted(%_optional_feature1 %optional_feature2 %optional_feature3)
> >
> > this would allow the buildbot to look for %tainted and if it does,
> > it could
> > rebuild it for tainted and add the particulars itself. this would
> > simplify the
> > whole plf/tainted thing easily. and since all 4 rpms are being built
> > at the
> > same time, you have no srpm problem either.
>
> A simple %define would do the trick, so that doesn't bring much.
> And we can keep a list of package that should be compiled twice, that's
> not the biggest problem to solve.

well, it's an idea, that allows us to have all the functionality we want, and
no manual intervention needed anymore.

> Le vendredi 18 février 2011 à 12:47 +0000, James Kerr a écrit :
>
>> If there are two packages, one in core and another in tainted, then
>> doesn't urpmi need a way to recognise that the tainted package is newer
>> than (an update to) the corresponding core package? I believe that this
>> is achieved in Mandriva, because plf is greater than mdv.
>
> That's abusing release tag and it work by pure chance ( ie, had the plf
> decided to be called the guillomovitch liberation front, it would not
> have worked ). And this is quite inflexible, since people will always
> have plf packages, leading to users adding some rpm in skip.list with a
> regexp.
Exactly! :)

I've just started to look into implementing support for favoring packages
based on %disttag, I'm thinking about implementing it in a way similar to this:

Say we have global variables such as these in urpmi.cfg:

disttag-priority: plf,mdv,mga
disttag-pin: 1
disttag-pin-force: 0

in urpmi:

* if disttag-priority is defined, it will compared the disttag of all
packages that
has the same or newer version, and favor the one of those with the disttag
that's highest on the disttag-priority list.

* if disttag-pin is set, it will refuse to upgrade to a newer version
of a package
that has a different disttag than the one installed.

* if disttag-pin-force is set, it will *always* upgrade/downgrade to the newest
version of a package which has the highest priority match, ie. if foo-2-1mdv
is installed, and the newest version with 'mga' disttag available in repos is
foo-1-1mga, then it will downgrade to it.

Notice that %disttag is a tag that's been implemented in rpm since long time
ago, but was never really adopted for anything, so in rpm5 it was dusted off
and was adjusted a tiny bit for it to be made possible to be defined globally
through macro files read, similar to ie. %vendor etc.

I've already in the past patched rpm 4.6 in cooker with support for at least
recognizing %distepoch (but not for using it in version comparision, doing
it should be fairly trivial though), I might've already made the change
mentioned for %disttag as well in the same patch, I don't really remember,
should anyhow be very trivial to do..

So if you'd like to eliminate 'mga' from release and version comparision,
you can already do so by making the minor change for %disttag, then
make adjustments accordingly to %_build_name_fmt and %mkrel.

Adopting distepoch as well will require slightly more, but won't really been
hard (the hard part has already been tendered well after slamming cooker
a bit more than expected..;) and would be a sane thing to adopt anyways..

FWIW in .spec files, the preferred conditional would be:

%if "%disttag" == "mga"
blabla
%else if "%disttag" == "plf"
hubbabubba
%else if "%disttag" == "mdv"
boink!
%endif

WDYT?

Just an fyi. Tried installing the server kernel, but any attempt
to boot it caused VirtualBox 4.0.2 to crash.

Took around 48 hours to compile a custom kernel. When installing
the modules, the root filesystem ran out of space.

I used a knoppix dvd image to move /usr/src to /home, and created
a symlink, in it's place.

Even though fsck shows the filesystems to be clean, any attempt
to boot now either crashes VirtualBox, or just gets a black screen
with no response (doesn't matter which kernel I select).

Tried installing the latest VirtualBox 4.0.4, but no change.

Looks like I'm going to have to start over. This time I'll put
the .vdi file on an ext2 filesystem, as there are known problems
with ext4 and virtualbox, regarding the usage of the host i/o
cache.

I expect it'll be at least another three days before I can produce
any comparison between using 1000 or 100 HZ timers.

Hi there,

As the title says so, this mail is intended to all people who would like
to become a packager, but who don’t know where to look, what’s the path,
what to do.

As you may or may not know, mentoring started a few weeks ago, with some
people who are already quite experienced in packaging.

These people are making progress quite quickly, and will soon be able to
be full-fledged packagers. Now, many of you would like to do that too.

So how to get started ?
-----------------------

Well, there are several things you can already do.

First, I suggest you to join #mageia-mentoring so that you can ask any
question you’d like to people who are already packagers. Don’t hesitate
to ask anything, there’s no stupid question. If you don’t get an
immediate answer, don’t hesitate to ping us

It would also be great that other mentors join the channel as well, so
that we can answer people. At the moment ahmad, mikala, anssi, Nanar and
I are on the channel.

I know nothing about packaging, could you give me a pointer ?
-------------------------------------------------------------

There’s a documentation that tries to summarize how to do a rpm on this
page:
http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=rpm_start

Don’t be afraid by the size of the page, take your time to read it.
We would appreciate some feedbacks about this documentation. Tell us if
some things are not clear, so that we can rephrase it, so that we can
explain it to you.

It’s not that hard really, and I suggest you to take a look at an
existing spec to see how it’s done.

At the moment, many packages have been imported, but many packages are
also waiting for someone to maintain it. You can have a list of
unmaintained packages here:
http://maint.mandriva.com/listpkgs.php?owner=1

Beware, check first that the package is not deprecated, unmaintained
upstream, and start with a small one, not very difficult, like a small
console app or a game. Again, if some bits are difficult to understand,
please tell us :-)

I already know some bits of packaging, would like to package for mageia,
what can I do ?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Packaging policies represent a good amount of doc that might be
difficult to learn. You don’t have to know them by heart at first, just
to know that they exist, and that you should refer to them when you are
trying to do. For instance, if you’re interested in python packages, you
don’t have to know the perl packaging policy, but you should know that
they exist and refer to it if you have a perl dependency to your
package.

Package policies are listed in this page :
http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=policies-review

You might also have a look at the aforementionned rpm start page in case
of doubt, and ask packagers when you don’t know.

Come on #mageia-mentoring, so that you can get in touch with a mentor,
and if he becomes available, you will be able to start with the various
tools we use to build packages.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do hope that this mail gives you a path to start with, please tell me
if I am missing something, and again don’t be discouraged by the amount
of documentation you will read.

Regards,

Hi,
I just saw, that apache-mpm-prefork package maybe contains problematic
things.
There is a note about it from Oden Erikson explaining things about the
package in the rpm.
--- begin ---
The most significant changes with this release compared to apache up to
Mandriva Linux 2006.0, 2007.0, 2007.1, 2008.0 and 2008.1

o mod_ssl has support for distcache, apr_memcache and SNI per
default.
o The SSL certificates and directories has been moved to the new
/etc/pki
 directory structure.
o The SSL default vhost config file has been moved from
 /etc/httpd/modules.d/41_mod_ssl.default-vhost.conf to
 /etc/httpd/conf/vhosts.d/01_default_ssl_vhost.conf
o The new htcacheclean subpackage will monitor and clean the
mod_proxy
(mod_disk_cache) directories at given intervals in a daemonized
fashion.
You can tune this in the /etc/sysconfig/htcacheclean configuration
file.
o There are three new experimental MPM's, the ITK, peruser and event
MPM's.
Use these with caution because of their experimental status. The
packages
 are named:
 - apache-mpm-event
 - apache-mpm-itk
 - apache-mpm-peruser

Please read the following files for more in-depth information about the
changes
in apache 2.2; upgrading.txt and new_features_2_2.txt

The best practise is to read the apache manual before sending in
bugreports,
please install apache-doc like so:

urpmi apache-doc

and then read the somewhat localized apache manual online at:

http://localhost/manual/

Thanks in advance.

Regards // Oden Eriksson
--- end ---

Shouldn't we write something on our own instead?

Oliver
