</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> I am not sure, if the &quot;any questions&quot; part includes support, but I
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> think so. History tells us that the higher the number of mailing lists
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> the higher the number of unused-and-left-to-cobwebs mailing lists
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> become...
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Would that not obsolete half our mailing lists though if &quot;any questions&quot;

</I>&gt;<i> open to interpretation.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I find it hard to believe though that a mageia-users@ list would end up

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> To me, &quot;discuss&quot; is related to topics that warrant discussion. It's
</I>&gt;<i> about things where different and even opposing points of view may exist
</I>&gt;<i> and can be worked out through a series of communications back and forth.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Support questions are not a discussion, they are simple matters of &quot;I
</I>&gt;<i> have a problem, how do I get it it fixed for me?&quot;. There are no opposing
</I>&gt;<i> points of view, only different suggestions based on the interpretation
</I>&gt;<i> of what the poster's problem is and the understanding of it by the
</I>&gt;<i> helpful reader willing to assist. I can well understand that a person
</I>&gt;<i> subscribed to this list might not be interested in end-user questions,
</I>&gt;<i> just as much as a person needing or providing help might be interested
</I>&gt;<i> in &quot;political bickering&quot; on the mageia-discuss list.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Thanks Ahmad for your feedback :)
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Remco
</I>
I agree with Ahmad's interpretation.
As well, I think you will get a better response on this discuss list than with a dedicated
user-help list.

My reasoning :
Many of those who would help you are interested in following the discussions. If they see someone
needing assistance, and they can help, they will. But they are not necessarily interested in
spending much time helping others. As well, likely they would not be able to help with most
problems. Those more strongly interested in helping others are probably already helping on the
forums, where it is easier to focus on particular problems needing solution.

My 2 cents.

</I>&gt;<i>I agree with Ahmad's interpretation.
</I>&gt;<i>As well, I think you will get a better response on this discuss list

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>My reasoning :
</I>&gt;<i>Many of those who would help you are interested in following the

</I>&gt;<i>much time helping others. As well, likely they would not be able to
</I>&gt;<i>help with most problems. Those more strongly interested in helping
</I>&gt;<i>others are probably already helping on the forums, where it is easier
</I>&gt;<i>to focus on particular problems needing solution.
</I>
I don't understand it (call me thick), but now people are saying that the
reason why a user gets an answer faster on the mailing list than on the
forum is because a question asked where it is possibly off-topic has a
better chance of being answered than in a place where it is on-topic?

Also, while I understand there is a big difference of scale, I'd like to
invite you to look at the debian-users mailing list for a while or have a
look at its archives and see which posts go unanswered there as compared
to the calls for help on our forum. If you feel this is not a fair
comparison, compare it to debian or ubuntu user forums.

Personal preferences aside, I do not see why the opposition to my
proposal. Is it really such an outrageous request? I'm honestly surprised
by some of the reactions I got on here and on IRC yesterday too, what to
me, seems like a no brainer.

Thanks and regards,

It is not an outrageous request.
I (and many others) just think that with the current state of Mageia development, that you would be
better served on the current Mageia discuss list than on a separate user-help list.
Asking for help on this list is not off-topic, in the opinion of most (if not almost all). It is
done all the time, and people willingly help.
If Mageia had the thousands of contributors of Debian, the situation could well be different.
As misc pointed out, a large part of the reason there is a better response on this list than on the
forum, is that more people frequent this list. I would add, more knowledgable people than would
likely frequent a user-help list. But that is just my take on the situation. I just wouldn't like
to see such a list being added, and it becoming more difficult to get help.

Another point. Often a problem brought up on this list makes others aware of potential
improvements, which can lead to a better Mageia. But a developer who might provide the improvement
is less likely to monitor a user-help list, as well the the developer and discuss lists.
So we're actually trying to give you and other users a better experience :)

another 2 cents :)

</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> frequently) I notice a number of requests for help and assistance
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> for a
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> variety of issues being posted on this list. To me this seems to be
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> not
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> really on topic for this list which, to my understanding, is more
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> aimed at
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> discussing the direction of Mageia for future releases and the role
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> Mageia
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> should play in the larger free software community.
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> &quot;Mageia-discuss is about Mageia general discussions: future plans,
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> community, association, ... Feel free to ask any questions here.&quot;
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> c.f. <A HREF="https://www.mageia.org/mailman/listinfo/mageia-discuss">https://www.mageia.org/mailman/listinfo/mageia-discuss</A>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> I am not sure, if the &quot;any questions&quot; part includes support, but I
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> think so. History tells us that the higher the number of mailing lists
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> the higher the number of unused-and-left-to-cobwebs mailing lists
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> become...
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> Would that not obsolete half our mailing lists though if &quot;any questions&quot;
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> are on topic on this list? I interpretate it as &quot;any questions on the
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> aforementioned topics&quot;, though I agree that &quot;...&quot; leaves a lot of room
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> open to interpretation.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> I agree with Ahmad's interpretation.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> As well, I think you will get a better response on this discuss list
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> than with a dedicated user-help list.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> My reasoning :
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> Many of those who would help you are interested in following the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> discussions. If they see someone needing assistance, and they can
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> help, they will. But they are not necessarily interested in spending
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> much time helping others. As well, likely they would not be able to
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> help with most problems. Those more strongly interested in helping
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> others are probably already helping on the forums, where it is easier
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> to focus on particular problems needing solution.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I don't understand it (call me thick), but now people are saying that
</I>&gt;<i> the reason why a user gets an answer faster on the mailing list than on
</I>&gt;<i> the forum is because a question asked where it is possibly off-topic has
</I>&gt;<i> a better chance of being answered than in a place where it is on-topic?
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Also, while I understand there is a big difference of scale, I'd like to
</I>&gt;<i> invite you to look at the debian-users mailing list for a while or have
</I>&gt;<i> a look at its archives and see which posts go unanswered there as
</I>&gt;<i> compared to the calls for help on our forum. If you feel this is not a
</I>&gt;<i> fair comparison, compare it to debian or ubuntu user forums.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Personal preferences aside, I do not see why the opposition to my
</I>&gt;<i> proposal. Is it really such an outrageous request? I'm honestly
</I>&gt;<i> surprised by some of the reactions I got on here and on IRC yesterday
</I>&gt;<i> too, what to me, seems like a no brainer.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Thanks and regards,
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Remco
</I>
It is not an outrageous request.

Often a problem brought up on this list makes developers aware of potential
improvements, which can lead to a better Mageia. But a developer who might provide the improvement
is less likely to monitor a user-help list, as well the the developer and discuss lists.
So we're actually trying to give you and other users a better experience :)

another 2 cents :)

due to the massive amounts of mail it gets.

Another thing I like is that I can sort, mark, filter and read mails on a

Ditto. I think a mailing list is more likely to have humour on it. Perhaps
it is more likely to have flamewars on it too, but I find that when I find

I wanted the box to be as if it had been installed from the 1 release, not
from the alpha or beta. I have the DVD copied to local files. To get around
this problem, I copied the i586/media directory in place of the previous one
then updated my media. In practical terms, the system is no different. If I

I think) if required.

The device causing the trouble turned out to be an external hard drive
enclosure I keep for backups. It has never been a problem before, including
for Mageia installation media. I watched it try every port number from 1 to
120 3 times without success, but once, when I left it for a while, the

<PRE>1. First I want to get rid of these all-time arguments against forums:
&quot;A posting in the forum gets off my radar screen when I am not
constantly monitoring the forum, while a mail in the mailing list
stays there.&quot; and &quot;I will see all mail topics in the list but I do not
have the time to search all sections of the forum for unanswered/new
posts.&quot;

Both are caused by wrong handling of a forum. In the forum you can
always view &quot;Active topics&quot; - you don't have to go through the whole
forum to search for new posts, they are marked as new. You do not lose
sight of such posts because they will only vanish to the 2nd page of
the list of &quot;Active topics&quot;. So where is the difference to a mailing
list in this context?

2. Michael showed some figures. These are normal. You will get much
less user support questions in this list than in the forum. This list
here lives not from user support requests but from discussions about
Mageia in general. It also lives from all the experienced people here,
including the packagers, developpers, founders, etc. Now what would a
nes support mailing list have except the user support requests and a
handful of people who care about giving support? All the other people
who are here now, will not automatically be available in a new support
list.
And those who are inot user communication and support mostly are
already in the forum.

3. History: What happened to teh MandrakeLinux mailing lists after the
international forum was opened to everybody? The lists died away.

So, in the end I am not against such a support list but I do not see
the necessity.

There's another point - as a lurker, being able to see in
the same mailing list both
(1) how things are developing
(2) how the problems are resolved
is a great reassurance to finally dipping my toes into
Mageia. Presumably this is what Mageia wants to encourage.
I imagine others might be in a similar situation, where they
would be put off trying to follow two lists, one full of
woes and the other mainly incomprehensible.
As an example of a very successful project, the mailing list
for Hugin has resisted splitting for much this sort of

&gt;<i> 1. First I want to get rid of these all-time arguments against forums:
</I>&gt;<i> &quot;A posting in the forum gets off my radar screen when I am not
</I>&gt;<i> constantly monitoring the forum, while a mail in the mailing list
</I>&gt;<i> stays there.&quot; and &quot;I will see all mail topics in the list but I do not
</I>&gt;<i> have the time to search all sections of the forum for unanswered/new
</I>&gt;<i> posts.&quot;
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Both are caused by wrong handling of a forum. In the forum you can
</I>&gt;<i> always view &quot;Active topics&quot; - you don't have to go through the whole
</I>&gt;<i> forum to search for new posts, they are marked as new. You do not lose
</I>&gt;<i> sight of such posts because they will only vanish to the 2nd page of
</I>&gt;<i> the list of &quot;Active topics&quot;. So where is the difference to a mailing
</I>&gt;<i> list in this context?
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> 2. Michael showed some figures. These are normal. You will get much
</I>&gt;<i> less user support questions in this list than in the forum. This list
</I>&gt;<i> here lives not from user support requests but from discussions about
</I>&gt;<i> Mageia in general. It also lives from all the experienced people here,
</I>&gt;<i> including the packagers, developpers, founders, etc. Now what would a
</I>&gt;<i> nes support mailing list have except the user support requests and a
</I>&gt;<i> handful of people who care about giving support? All the other people
</I>&gt;<i> who are here now, will not automatically be available in a new support
</I>&gt;<i> list.
</I>&gt;<i> And those who are inot user communication and support mostly are
</I>&gt;<i> already in the forum.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> 3. History: What happened to teh MandrakeLinux mailing lists after the
</I>&gt;<i> international forum was opened to everybody? The lists died away.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So, in the end I am not against such a support list but I do not see
</I>&gt;<i> the necessity.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>

Also there is the solution to follow all or part of a forum with rss.

I prefers rss as:
it does nt stress as the email,
i can follow everything,
i can click on the title to see the text if the title interesting me. In forum i have to click on a subject but it takes a lot of time to see the topic in a new page

But that is a band-aid, a kludge, that gives you a cobbled-together
system, not to mention it does not really solve the problem for the
distro and the wider user base. And every time you need to install
Mageia on that hardware, you'll need to apply the kludge again and
again.

The goal should be to have a distro that 'just works'. Solving the
problem by copying files from outside the repositories may point out a
deficiency in Mageia repos, but not if the solution can be found
within.

And this brings up a point of having the tainted repos as &quot;opt-in&quot;.
This thinking comes from a philosophy of some kind of &quot;pure&quot; Linux
which eschews non-free licensed software. However, some hardware can
only be useful with non-free software and it's unrealistic to pretend
that such hardware does not exist nor that those using such hardware
will have the knowledge and skill to enable the tainted repo.

I realize that the purists among us have decide to disable the tainted
repos by default, but those same people are the ones most likely to
have selected hardware that does not depend on non-free software and
they are also skilled Linux users. The opt-in approach serves to
advance their political agenda at the expense of having a distro that
'just works' for the average to non-technical user.

It may be more sense to enable the tainted repos by default and
provide an opt-out screen during the installation: &quot;Repositories
offering access to software that have non-free licenses are enabled by
default. To keep your Mageia system unencumbered by software with
restrictive or non-free licenses, please un-check the box. Certain
hardware may not function without such non-free software and if you
are unsure, leave the box checked.&quot;

That gives users a choice, makes Mageia a 'just works' distro for the
average user and reduces the number of requests for assistance that
can be solved by using non-free software.

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The goal should be to have a distro that 'just works'. Solving the

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> It may be more sense to enable the tainted repos by default and
</I>&gt;<i> provide an opt-out screen during the installation: &quot;Repositories
</I>&gt;<i> offering access to software that have non-free licenses are enabled by
</I>&gt;<i> default. To keep your Mageia system unencumbered by software with

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> That gives users a choice, makes Mageia a 'just works' distro for the
</I>&gt;<i> average user and reduces the number of requests for assistance that
</I>&gt;<i> can be solved by using non-free software.

Yes indeed, I also like mailing lists for their simplicity and speed.
RSS is good to follow a forum.

Another suggestion I would like to make is mailing list integration.
An email to the mailing list would also be posted on the forum and a
posting on the forum gets also posted on the mailing list. A
forum/mailing list like described is for example the Nginx forum
<A HREF="http://forum.nginx.org/">http://forum.nginx.org/</A> ,although that one is based on phorum and not
phpbb like Magiea's forum.

A google search showed two options for mailing list integration with phpbb:
1) m2f (mail2forum) <A HREF="http://mail2forum.com/">http://mail2forum.com/</A>
2) foum-mailing list bridge
<A HREF="http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&amp;t=2099210&amp;start=15">http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&amp;t=2099210&amp;start=15</A>

Basically, yes. You may run into dependency problems but if you manage to

For comparison's sake, the LibreOffice mailists[1] all operate this way,
the mailists are bridged to GMane, forums (Nabble Gateway) this offers
great flexibility with our different teams. IRC is available as well. I
have to say that by covering all communication bases this way, the
LibreOffice teams have been able to make great headway in the very few
months of its existence. I am very impressed at how few complaints there
have been of the communication process just by having covered all of
these forms right from the very start.

Taking a look at this setup may be of interest.

<PRE>There are many examples on the web which cover all options
 - only forums
 - only mailing lists (although I haven't seen a distribution for
average users without a user forum)
 - both without bridge
 - both with bridge

I have handled my mailing lists and usenet groups with mutt and
(later) Emacs/Gnus; I have been administrating a forum myself and I'm
member of some large and not so large forums, technical and
non-techie. All this for quite some years. This said I think I know
what I'm talking about:

If you know how to work in a forum and in mailing lists, there is only
one difference between a forum and a mailing list:

 - a forum is a graphical communication platform while the mailing
lists are not. Period.

So, the mailing list has but one advantage over a forum: it is easier
to handle than a forum when you are on a system without graphical
environment. The rest is nothing but individual taste, individual
workflow, individual habits. Knowing both sides of the coin I haven't
yet read any real argument in favor of one side.

But back to the initial topic:

The issue here is the request to have another list which covers
exactly what the forums are made for. Is this really necessary and -
the main question - would this list have a chance to be living along a
forum? Mind that a users support list would NOT be the same as this
list here, you can't judge what would happen in a user support list by
looking who is posting here in this list!

Well, last time I checked and asked Skype.com if we (mandrivauser.de)
could distribute a Skype rpm in one of our editions (MUD Netbook

MIB did not bother to ask Skype.

<PRE>Le 2011-06-04 16:27, Wolfgang Bornath a &#233;crit :
&gt;<i> There are many examples on the web which cover all options
</I>&gt;<i> - only forums
</I>&gt;<i> - only mailing lists (although I haven't seen a distribution for
</I>&gt;<i> average users without a user forum)
</I>&gt;<i> - both without bridge
</I>&gt;<i> - both with bridge
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I have handled my mailing lists and usenet groups with mutt and
</I>&gt;<i> (later) Emacs/Gnus; I have been administrating a forum myself and I'm
</I>&gt;<i> member of some large and not so large forums, technical and
</I>&gt;<i> non-techie. All this for quite some years. This said I think I know
</I>&gt;<i> what I'm talking about:
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> If you know how to work in a forum and in mailing lists, there is only
</I>&gt;<i> one difference between a forum and a mailing list:
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> - a forum is a graphical communication platform while the mailing
</I>&gt;<i> lists are not. Period.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So, the mailing list has but one advantage over a forum: it is easier
</I>&gt;<i> to handle than a forum when you are on a system without graphical
</I>&gt;<i> environment. The rest is nothing but individual taste, individual
</I>&gt;<i> workflow, individual habits. Knowing both sides of the coin I haven't
</I>&gt;<i> yet read any real argument in favor of one side.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> But back to the initial topic:
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> The issue here is the request to have another list which covers
</I>&gt;<i> exactly what the forums are made for. Is this really necessary and -
</I>&gt;<i> the main question - would this list have a chance to be living along a
</I>&gt;<i> forum? Mind that a users support list would NOT be the same as this
</I>&gt;<i> list here, you can't judge what would happen in a user support list by
</I>&gt;<i> looking who is posting here in this list!
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> 'nuff said
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
I obviously came in on the conversation at a really bad time. My
apologies if my post upset you.

Cheers

Marc
