>> >>> The correct way to do this is not a drop-down allowing a single choice.
>> >>> It's a set of toggles for things like "hide background library
>> >>> packages", "hide language-specific packages for uninstalled languages",
>> >>> and so forth, with these things initially checked by default. You could

>> >>> checked by default. Also, give the toggles their own menubar entry,
>> >>> e.g. "View".

> One word of support comes to mind for this one:
>
> Essential

The problem is:
If you hide too much ("Programs with GUI") the forums are crowded with
threads like
 - "Install foo from the MCC"
 - "I can't find it in the software management"
 - "Did you set your media?"
 - "Yes, foo is not there."
 - "Did you change view to 'All'?"
 - "Ah! Now I see it - very confusing!"
There were times when such postings were more than 10 per month!

If you hide too few like "All" the unexperienced user is confused. He
will be surely confused by a list of options he hasn't any clue what
they mean.

A solution could be to
1. hide everything but the application packages (no matter if GUI or CLI)
2. Insert such a list of options but give it an "expert" tag.
3. The most important: make a search result visible also if the result
is something which would be hidden otherwise.

Example:
gstreamer-plugin-devel (don't care about the name) would be hidden in
standard view. But if the user writes "gstreamer" into the search
field it shouold be displayed in the search result view.

This way we could even keep the current order with "programs with gui"
as default. When the user no searches for 'mc' he will see it in the
list of search results, although 'mc' would not be displayed in
"Programs with GUI" view.

Does anybody understand what I wrote? Can't explain it in better words. :)

OTOH for new users, this overwelming choice of programs can be quite
overwelming.

I would propose to have a bydefault hiding of most of the programs (more or
less like now); but when once clicked off, to be remembered for next time.

OR

when you search and find nothing; to get a display that the view is switched to
all; because it couldn't find your package

OR

have the results in two collapsable regions; where the first one contains the
"GUI" packages and the 2nd is collapsed by default (when the first one is
empty, it's collapsed and the 2nd one is open?

I want this to be usefull for new users (while not being unusefull for
contributers like myself) my dad, for instance, absolutely loves that by
default the GUI packages are listed; because he never uses any console.

>>>
>> Excellent point. This mirrors something I suggested in another thread
>> about rpmdrake and repositories. Show anything, if it's asked for,
>> whether the source is "disabled" or not.
>>
> OTOH for new users, this overwelming choice of programs can be quite
> overwelming.
>
> I would propose to have a bydefault hiding of most of the programs (more or
> less like now); but when once clicked off, to be remembered for next time.
>

Umm, you *did* read the bit about how the would existing "hidden"
choices would be hidden by default ?
> OR
>
> when you search and find nothing; to get a display that the view is switched to
> all; because it couldn't find your package
>

Well, maybe a popup to the effect that if you change your view you might
see what you wanted...
> OR
>
> have the results in two collapsable regions; where the first one contains the
> "GUI" packages and the 2nd is collapsed by default (when the first one is
> empty, it's collapsed and the 2nd one is open?
>

I think the above popup would do.

>
> I want this to be usefull for new users (while not being unusefull for
> contributers like myself) my dad, for instance, absolutely loves that by
> default the GUI packages are listed; because he never uses any console.
>

Hmm. Does your dad really care, or are you just projecting onto him ?
In other words, did he actually use rpmdrake back when "All" was the
default and have a problem with it, or are you just assuming that he'd
want GUI packages by default because of what you know he likes ?

>>
>>> I think that it is pretty clear that packagers don't really want to
>>> deal with updating description, but the users would like to have
>>> updated descriptions. So, what if there was a group of users in charge
>>> of updating the package descriptions/translations where needed? Would
>>> this work?
>>>
>> The problem is that currently if we want to translate the description, then
>>
>> we have to modify the SPEC of the RPM, which can only be done with
>> packager.
>>
>> Like the previous messages, we have 2 methods to choose:
>>
>> 1 .po files for 1 package
>>
>> or
>>
>> 1 .po files for multiple packages
>>
>> The first one would cause many .po files to maintain, while the other
>>
>> cause the maintainence hard( too complicate).
>> ====
>> I think maybe a more aggresive way is better:
>>
>> Make the detailed description available only for programs, not packages.
>>
>> Currently the RPMDRAKE is packages based, which is hard for newbies to find
>>
>> programs they need and the amount of the description need to maintain
>> also scares
>>
>> everyone off.
>>
>> The "Programs with GUI" option is the first step, but I think we should
>> step further,
>>
>> let people install programs, not packages. Therefore, we can ease both
>> the difficulty
>>
>> of maintain descriptions and installation harsh.
>>
>>
> Ah! I guess my choice of words. I am still finding my way around the
> jargon. I would have meant all of this for software. Yes. This would all
> make sense.
>
> I agree with you. And as stated earlier, often the description has been
> updated on the programme's website and there is little fiddling around
> to include it.
>
> I also believe that we should try to help the devs as much as possible
> and make their work as much as "developer" by nature as possible. We can
> take care of the more mundane tasks for them. Let's let them code to
> their heart's delight and we will just gain more from their hard and
> generous work. Just as they will with us.
>
> BTW, in my opinion, the default GUI setting in the MCC was not a right
> choice. It excluded too many pieces of software for users. I usually
> recommended people to select the "All" setting, and from there to search
> for the ideal programme. There are just not enough GUI packages in the
> repos to make it fun in that particular sections. Everything should be
> available to the user.
>

>>>> higher, this is not a very friendly answer towards the users...
>>>>
>>>>
>>> I think I demonstrated in the past that constant friendliness toward
>>> users is not one of my distinctive characteristics.
>>>
>>> The patch arguent is invalid, because people can also send mail, like
>>> "here is a better description of package $FOO because I didn't
>>> understood the current one and I wanted to help".
>>>
>>> So while sending a email and finding the packager email can be hard for
>>> some people, I doubt that sending a email is hard for everybody.
>>>
>>> If writing a decent description is easy and almost effortless, and if
>>> sending a email is easy, then what is difficult into doing both ?
>>>
>> I agree that it is only logical to contribute by e-mailing the packager
>> about an improvement need in the package, but some packagers don't want you
>> e-mailing them about their package.
>>
>> As a community distro, we want to try to make it comfortable and easy for
>> everyone to get involved.
>>
>> Knowing that many packagers are not going to want you e-mailing them about
>> their package, reduces the number of people that will take the time to
>> e-mail them with such contribution. Of course what makes it easier for one,
>> makes it harder for another, so there needs to be balance there. Sometimes
>> our expectations are expecting too much from the other who is working a lot
>> of thankless hours to keep the distro going.
>>
>> It's all about balance and efficiency, and making it easy for people to
>> start contributing, and realizing that some jobs are more time consuming
>> than we might think.
>>
>> Developing systems and protocols help keep things running efficient, and
>> moving forward.

> Yes, using bugzilla is usually better; an advantage of filing a bug
> report over sending a personal email is that the bug gets more
> exposure and any packager who has a bit of free time and can fix it
> (especially if you're talking about just changing the package
> description) will do so; i.e. the whole process becomes faster by
> distributing the workload (especially not-too-invasive package
> changes).
>
>
Perhaps the packagers and the backporters (assuming we have any) should
have their own digest mailing list. The packagers are very busy but the
backporters (community members with the basic knowledge to make an RPM
from Cauldron) would be proud and happy to make sense of users package
description suggestions and pass on a heads up to the packager if a good
suggestion comes along. It would cut down on the noise that a true
packager would have to wade through and, once a relationship is
developed between a packager and a backporter, 'could' make the
packagers job somewhat easier while at the same time (assuming that the
backporters are good community members i.e. IRC, newbie and expert
mailing list etc.) give users an easily accessible point of contact for
regular users. I think users would appreciate this. Backporters would
be glad to be a part of both the user and dev community and packagers
would be able to participate in the community at the level they feel
they are able to without feeling that they are stretched thin.
While I'm on this subject. I think it might be a good idea to have
assigned backporters for packages or groups of packages. Just a thought.

>
>
>
>

What's "standard view" in this context? standard view is empty when I
open rpmdrake; or you mean when one selects a group/category from the
list on the left?

> This way we could even keep the current order with "programs with gui"
> as default. When the user no searches for 'mc' he will see it in the
> list of search results, although 'mc' would not be displayed in
> "Programs with GUI" view.
>

Well that's the same problem, you search for 'amarok' you'll get a lot
of packages, libs, -utils,-scripts (double that number on 64bit
installs as you'll see both x86_64 and i586 packages).

I still think a "Show more" button, however it is implemented, is a good idea...

> Does anybody understand what I wrote? Can't explain it in better words. :)

> >> >>> The correct way to do this is not a drop-down allowing a single choice.
> >> >>> It's a set of toggles for things like "hide background library
> >> >>> packages", "hide language-specific packages for uninstalled languages",
> >> >>> and so forth, with these things initially checked by default. You could

> >> >>> checked by default. Also, give the toggles their own menubar entry,
> >> >>> e.g. "View".
> >> >>>
> >> >> I second this idea.

> >>
> >> Marc
> >
> >
>
>
>
>
>
>

Yes, appreciate what your are suggesting.

I have, over the years, developed a detailed 40 page configuration guide
which is amended with each 'stable' release, although I have worked in
the cooker environment for some 9 years now. We start with 'custom',
make very minimal changes in the selection list, make GNOME the desktop
and go on from there ....

Once the system is up and running, we have a detailed list of packages
to be installed via urpmi to meet our own requirements.

Frankly, I value highly the need for the search utility continuing to
search for everything all the time. This is how I began to appreciate
just how much was 'under the hood'. I do not use the gui groupings to
select packages after the initial install, because I find it repetitive
and time consuming, not to mention incomplete. That is NOT to say I
don't think it serves any purpose, it just doesn't for me.

I don't think we need add extra labels to what we have - even the much
derided 'newbie' knows what a search is, and the power of that search is
an eye-opener for most folks. It invites the curious to learn which is a
great outcome, no?

Good points

It can be done in a clear way without colours; i.e
o Bold for GUI
o Normal for Console
o Underlined for crucial system parts
o Italic for "other"

On top of this they may also be color coded in dark colours,
so they are nice looking for most of us, AND cleraly seen for everyone.
Example:

o Bold for GUI, dark green
o Normal for Console, dark blue
o Underlined for crucial system parts, dark red
o Italic for "other", black

But i think the colors could be chosen as mixtures so also all different kind
of colourblind people see defference in colours.
Also avoiding

( What is much harder, and i donṫ think is given much attention, is designing
icon themes, logos etc also for colour blindness, but it is mentionned in the
link you gave )

>>
>>
>
>
>
>
>
>

Seems clear to me. That's a workable approach.
However, I'd prefer something a little different.

If the packages are displayed by category, libraries are mostly already
separated, so they don't pose a problem. (But my approach would work
with them as well.)

Localisations could be grouped in a folding entry (much like
subdirectories in the Nautilus file browser), openable with a click to
see all the localisations. Thus avoiding seeing more than one such line
except when one wishes to access localisation packages.
The idea to only display localisations installed is good. They could
also be displayed separately from folded non-installed localisations.

We could even have a global option to display/install only certain
localisations.
This could be used not only for separate packages, but to avoid
installing localisation files inside a package that one has no intention
of using, thus reducing a lot of clutter - and wasted disk space.
(Personally, I don't need anything more than the various French and
English localisations.)
This alone would be a very good idea.

Subsidiary packages associated with a particular application could also
be folded into one line by default, as well.

With this approach, we won't need a "hide everything but the application
packages" option, as that is essentially what would appear by default.
"Experts" need only expand the folded lines to see all the hidden packages.

Also, we could have more than 2 levels if we find in useful in the
future, for more finely tuning the display.
Note that in the Microsoft environment, this approach has been used for
the installation of many application suites. WordPerfect suite comes to
mind. (More than 10 years ago ;) )

In any case, Rpmdrake needs to be enhanced.

my 2 cents :)

If i search vlc, it would be for sure that i want the player... and if i want a
lib thing i write the name and it should be recognized that i need a lib and not
a program with ´lib´ in it´s name.
Also if i actually search for a program with ´lib´ in the name, a button should
auto appear to show less results ( meaning just GUI´s)... and if i want vlc
lib´s, a button with show more results...

´lib´ and´vlc´ are just for the sake of simplicity

I hope i´m not annoying,
Dan.
