Since then I've found the simplest and most convenient way is to
get the Local Folders account to map onto (a copy of) one's existing
/kmail/mail (maildir) folder.
I had been apprehensive at moving from KDE 4.5.2's KMail to 4.8.2,
but have been pleasantly surprised.
In fact, if it wasn't for the broken* state of KMail's 'Find
Messages' function I was planning to move over onto Mageia-2 as my
main system.
(* See e.g. bugs.kde.org's 281227 and 299840.)
