I personally have 2(3) goals with this:
 - fit on 256MB flash (for work)
 - use it as server minimal install template for virtual machines in a 
dedicated setup.
 - i used to think about a PXE solution where i put the whole system in an 
initrd structure, so that it would have it's basesystem directly loaded into 
memory, but it seems PXE always uses slow network transfer rates...

also;
 - having less packages means also faster install time.
