Col,

Just as an aside, does this increased role of udev have anything to do
with the automount breakage I posted about a few days back ? From the
syslog messages in the working case (all hal-related), it occurred to me
that perhaps hal has been dropped and whatever replaced it is dropping
the ball.

cf.:
> Sometime over the last couple of days, loaded DVDs are no longer being
> mounted under /media.
>
> KDE recognizes the loaded DVD, and brings up the panel popup that
> gives you suggested actions. However, neither "df" nor "mount" shows
> the disk to be mounted.
>
> LXDE does not seem to recognize the disk at all, and does not launch
> either the "what should I do" prompt or the file manager display of
> the folders on the disk.
