First of all, where did mikala say anything about &quot;dropping right now&quot;?

GNOME and KDE4 already use upower and udisks i.e. they don't require hal at all.

All the apps you picked (from the Fedora page?) can probably work
without hal, (e.g. I don't have haldaemon running for about 4-5 months
now, and gimp works OK).

The point is, other major distros have already gone through the
halsectomy phase, which means we have very rich resources to draw on.
