I think what you did, trying to reproduce and asking Thierry for help,
was the good thing to do.

In doubt, it is always good to ask the maintainer or committer(s) of
the involved package.

By the way, it does happen that we think a bug is valid and assign a
bug to a maintainer, but that the bug turns out to be in another
package than we thought, or that is is user error after all.

Don't get discouraged if that happens to you: it happens to all of us.
