+My posing the question as usual brings more questions to mind and exploring

+What I apparently did was to change from "classic menu style" to 
+"application launcher style."  I now can switch back and forth, and in 
+addition have been able to change the right click on the desktop to the 
+original, which had changed and had not mentioned before.  But the launch 
+problem persists.

+In addition, by switching user to xguest, everything works ok.
