</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> What you need to do is compare the speed of your router/switches to
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> the speed your ISP gives you. Typically, the ISP speed is the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> bottleneck. The faster router/switches can only exceed the ISP's
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> bandwidth when you're going from machine to machine in your house,
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> which may be worth it if you do a lot of large file transfers.

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> particular system with a slower NIC won't see the benefit unless it
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> upgrades as well.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> All of our NIC's are gigabit NIC's.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So would it be worthwhile to upgrade to gigabit router/switches.
</I>&gt;<i> Actually, now that I think of it, we do use my computer as the music
</I>&gt;<i> server for the house ... we have 5 computers on the go at all times.
</I>&gt;<i> I don't sleep much. :-)
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
As someone would say... that al depends.
For the speed from each computer to the intenet, you are safe. The ISP
speed is the limit.

If you talk about moving files between computers inside your home, you
should try to keep gigabit interconnection everywhere. Some numbers:

- i have an Linksys WRT320N at home. Raw performace measured with
iperf between win and linux is about 800Mbps.
- real performance is much worse, copying from my win server to my linux
box (win share mounted on linux), gives about 500 Mbps
- as music server, if you use mp3 even at 320 Kbps, you can serve about
 1500 simultaneous streams... at 100Mb, only 150 ;)
- if you play videos for example mounting a shared drive on clients:
playing an mkv HD video, that totem says is compressed about 3MBps,
uses a bit more, about 4Mbps (read via samba client from linux),
so bandwith is pretty fine even at 100Mb
- the only problem is when you want to copy a big file and don't want to
wait... that is where gigabit really pays off. Copying a 1.2 Gb file
took 30 secs on gigabit, that means 300 on 100Mb, so five minutes..

So, for usual media streaming, you are fine at 100, but for heavy file
movement, gigabit is worth it.

You can leave your router alone, and get a decent giga switch for
about 100 euros.

</I>&gt;<i> telco hardware.
</I>
There's your answer. 6M &lt;&lt; 1000M, so in terms of what you can pull from
the external internet, you won't see a difference.

&gt;<i> All of our NIC's are gigabit NIC's.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So would it be worthwhile to upgrade to gigabit router/switches.
</I>
I don't know your setup, but if you use both routers and switches with 5
systems, I'm guessing that the router and all of the wired systems
connect through the switch (that's really all they need to see each
other), and the router takes care of DHCP, wireless, and gating to the
external net.

In that case, it's probably worthwhile upgrading the switch to gigabit,
as that will allow your internal systems to communicate at gigabit
speeds. The router can stay as it is, since it can only push data to
the ISP at 6M tops anyway, and its interaction with the internal systems
is limited to brief DHCP exchanges.

Wireless is another issue. If the router is doing the wireless,
upgrading to a good-quality n-level wireless router will give your
wireless systems more parity with their wired brethren. Be careful of
high-speed n-level routers that only deliver their top-rated speed if
all of the wireless NICs come from the same vendor.

</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> desktop and
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> all installs well except for one problem. I am hooked into my house
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> network but there is no internet access. I can see all computers
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> on the
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> LAN and install the printer through CUPS.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> This sounds like a network configuration failure somewhere, possibly
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> in your router. If you can connect to your other computers in the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> network (ping, nmap, smbclient etc.) then your card seems to be
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> working fine. If your card was malfunctioning, I would presume you
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> wouldn't get any network at all.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> I just tried the latest Ubuntu live CD and the Acer also cannot do
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> internet. I tried it on another Ethernet line in our house where a
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> computer is working fine and it also does not work.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> Did you try the live CD on Another computer, to verify if it works on
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> another computer?
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> Does it sound like the NIC is defective?
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> If you get access to the rest of your network but not the internet, I
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> would say no. Your nic seems to be working.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> And since you seem to have tried other distros, it also sounds like
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> your router is somehow configured to not let the IP your computer
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> use, through to the internet.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> I would check that the router is configured to let through all the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> IPs your dhcp server is handing out.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> This is what popped into my head anyway.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Thanks for the note. I took it back and left with egg on my face as it
</I>&gt;<i> worked perfectly well with one of the IT's linux Mint stick ... he
</I>&gt;<i> suggested I use it instead.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So, I took the unit back home and eliminated all 5 switches (we have
</I>&gt;<i> to boys in the family who have their buddies over with their machines
</I>&gt;<i> for gaming -- our house is also completely wire (we had it done about
</I>&gt;<i> 10 years ago when we had it built)) and for some reason the router
</I>&gt;<i> would not let the new unit on no matter what (it had an ip address of
</I>&gt;<i> 192.168.1.12).
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I then tried to re-set the router and it refused to reset 4 times
</I>&gt;<i> before it finally reset completely. That was it. Now everything works
</I>&gt;<i> as per normal.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> We had some bad thunderstorms about 3 weeks ago with multiple power
</I>&gt;<i> failures in the space of about an hour and a half. Maybe that was it.
</I>&gt;<i> I'll replace the router the next time I go back to the store and
</I>&gt;<i> explain IT staff.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Now I can get back to my installation.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Cheers,
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Marc
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>Static charges can make a router (or some card in a computer)
malfunction, even for an extended period of time -- to subsequently
start working perfectly again.
It used to be VERY common with computers some 20 years ago. (My clients
were mostly in industrial areas which often had power spikes. More
recent computers are a lot more resistant to problems.)

I had similar problems with my router a few years back (for several
months), and more recently for 2 months my video card displayed all but
the simplist colours in green. (Very frustrating for displaying
photos.) But both work perfectly since.

So probably not useful to replace your router. (Although a backup
router might be reassuring.)

<PRE>Hi Andr&#233;

&gt;<i> Static charges can make a router (or some card in a computer)
</I>&gt;<i> malfunction, even for an extended period of time -- to subsequently
</I>&gt;<i> start working perfectly again.
</I>&gt;<i> It used to be VERY common with computers some 20 years ago. (My clients
</I>&gt;<i> were mostly in industrial areas which often had power spikes. More
</I>&gt;<i> recent computers are a lot more resistant to problems.)
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I had similar problems with my router a few years back (for several
</I>&gt;<i> months), and more recently for 2 months my video card displayed all but
</I>&gt;<i> the simplist colours in green. (Very frustrating for displaying photos.)
</I>&gt;<i> But both work perfectly since.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So probably not useful to replace your router. (Although a backup router
</I>&gt;<i> might be reassuring.)
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Regards
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
It certainly would be nice if the router would fix itself, I bought the
router recently (Belkin N router) as we wanted to use our laptops and
wifi cellphones on the patio. Although that didn't work quite like I
wanted. The reach is still not too great.

The overriding factor as to whether to buy a backup router is mostly
whether it affects my gamer-kids. Missing a minute of WOW, NHL Hockey or
Facebook would be the end of the world ... or something more severe! ;-)

I looks like the consensus with my family is to buy a backup router just
in case the Belkin dies on us.

Cheers,

Le 2012-05-04 19:14, JA Magall&#243;n a &#233;crit :
&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> As someone would say... that al depends.
</I>&gt;<i> For the speed from each computer to the intenet, you are safe. The ISP
</I>&gt;<i> speed is the limit.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> If you talk about moving files between computers inside your home, you
</I>&gt;<i> should try to keep gigabit interconnection everywhere. Some numbers:
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> - i have an Linksys WRT320N at home. Raw performace measured with
</I>&gt;<i> iperf between win and linux is about 800Mbps.
</I>&gt;<i> - real performance is much worse, copying from my win server to my linux
</I>&gt;<i> box (win share mounted on linux), gives about 500 Mbps
</I>&gt;<i> - as music server, if you use mp3 even at 320 Kbps, you can serve about
</I>&gt;<i> 1500 simultaneous streams... at 100Mb, only 150 ;)
</I>&gt;<i> - if you play videos for example mounting a shared drive on clients:
</I>&gt;<i> playing an mkv HD video, that totem says is compressed about 3MBps,
</I>&gt;<i> uses a bit more, about 4Mbps (read via samba client from linux),
</I>&gt;<i> so bandwith is pretty fine even at 100Mb
</I>&gt;<i> - the only problem is when you want to copy a big file and don't want to
</I>&gt;<i> wait... that is where gigabit really pays off. Copying a 1.2 Gb file
</I>&gt;<i> took 30 secs on gigabit, that means 300 on 100Mb, so five minutes..
</I>&gt;<i> So, for usual media streaming, you are fine at 100, but for heavy file
</I>&gt;<i> movement, gigabit is worth it.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> You can leave your router alone, and get a decent giga switch for
</I>&gt;<i> about 100 euros.
</I>&gt;<i>

</I>&gt;&gt;<i> telco hardware.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> There's your answer. 6M &lt;&lt; 1000M, so in terms of what you can pull from
</I>&gt;<i> the external internet, you won't see a difference.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> All of our NIC's are gigabit NIC's.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> So would it be worthwhile to upgrade to gigabit router/switches.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I don't know your setup, but if you use both routers and switches with 5
</I>&gt;<i> systems, I'm guessing that the router and all of the wired systems
</I>&gt;<i> connect through the switch (that's really all they need to see each
</I>&gt;<i> other), and the router takes care of DHCP, wireless, and gating to the
</I>&gt;<i> external net.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> In that case, it's probably worthwhile upgrading the switch to gigabit,
</I>&gt;<i> as that will allow your internal systems to communicate at gigabit
</I>&gt;<i> speeds. The router can stay as it is, since it can only push data to the
</I>&gt;<i> ISP at 6M tops anyway, and its interaction with the internal systems is
</I>&gt;<i> limited to brief DHCP exchanges.
</I>
I think I'll start upgrading the switches. We have a few switches
throughout the house. It does make sense for my own sake as all my
family members are getting their music served up from my computer. It is
actually not a server, it's my desktop and it acts as the music-server.
Anyway, I'll look into upgrading and try to get some more performance
out of the network.

&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Wireless is another issue. If the router is doing the wireless,
</I>&gt;<i> upgrading to a good-quality n-level wireless router will give your
</I>&gt;<i> wireless systems more parity with their wired brethren. Be careful of
</I>&gt;<i> high-speed n-level routers that only deliver their top-rated speed if
</I>&gt;<i> all of the wireless NICs come from the same vendor.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
That's interesting to note; I recently bought a N-router but didn't see
big gains in speed or distance. Maybe that is why. I was actually going
to check to see if I could boost the signal a bit to get more reach -- I
use a laptop on our patio but the signal can be troublesome at the best
of times.

Good catch!

Web 3.4 has done away with the concept of a homepage.
The culprit causing this issue is the
'epiphany-3.4.0.1-default-mageia-homepage.patch' in the src.rpm that
replaces about:blank by <A HREF="file:///usr/share/indexhtml/index.html.">file:///usr/share/indexhtml/index.html.</A>
Unintended consequence is that the 'restore previous session' prompt
