-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA256

Hello,

Unless anyone objects by 10PM PST on Monday, I am going to update the
Mageia 2, Beta 1 Errata page for the proper/current Radeon firmware fix.

The posted fix no longer works because the firmware files are in a
package called "radeon-firmware", which is in "Nonfree Updates". The
user has to add/enable "Nonfree Updates" to a basic installation.
Installing the rpm also runs "bootloader-config", so that section can be
removed.

Proper steps, but not the proper formatting:
1) Add "radeon.modeset=0" to the kernel command line in GRUB
(link on how to do that)
2) Boot system
3) Add "Nonfree Updates" repository (link to how to do that) or
 download (direct link to rpm)
4) "urpmi radeon-firmware" or "urpmi <file-name>"
5) restart system

I know that there is still an open discussion on how to handle this for
Mageia 2, but this is how to handle it for Beta 1.

Thank you,

Jeff

I am a long time Mandrake/Mandriva user (since Mandrake 7.1). I have a lot of
experience with Mandriva system administration and use, I even administer
Mandriva Enterprise Server systems for my engineering department at work
(though I am not on IT staff).

I am starting to realize that Mandriva is no longer what I once valued. It
seems like the community I knew as "Mandriva" is now named "Mageia", and the
demise of the Mandriva distribution as I grew to know it makes me think about
how to take more part in making sure it survives.

I'm a family, working man with young children. I support free, open source in
various capacities, but one would probably not call them prolific. One more
visible contribution is via the http://sourceforge.net/projects/crossfire/
team. I tend to work in spurts, and sometimes real life takes me away from
these side areas of interest.

I tended to think that probably official distribution support teams were more
likely to want people that could consistently pour significant time into
things, but a #mageia-social / #mageia IRC user said that should not stop me
from looking into it further.

Are any team members interested in giving feedback about whether they see
benefit in incorporating light contributors or not?

After looking over the teams, specifically it seems that the documentation
team and packaging teams could fit my core skills. It occurs to me that the
documentation team might be more amenable to light contribution than a
packaging team, but I don't know.

Some challenges are that I am in the USA and it seems that meetings on IRC
tend to happen at a UTC time when I cannot participate. I contribute to local
organizations on a weekly basis, so its not like this would be a primary time
contribution outside of often extended working hours.

I guess once I get a sense for whether it is reasonable to approach teams I
could go into more detail about what I can do.

What do you (team leaders/members) think? Do you appreciate all the help you
get, or do you need more of the kind of resource where you can make regular,
specific sorts of assignments that get done promptly. Do you expect team
members to be ready to work anytime, or do teams have things to do that can
sustain more flexibility?

>

As I understand it, all teams have contributors who aren't always available.
The intensive contributors are much more noticeable, and essential to

>

That is true. A lot of little improvements could be made, just a few

That does affect contributors not close to European time zones, but most

As a member of the qa team, who also tries to help out with bug triaging
and qaushing (When the bug is lack of education), my response is to just
go ahead and join any team you think you can help with.

If your time is limited, that will have an impact for something like
the packagers team, where you have to be available to respond to bug
reports in a reasonable time. Likewise with the sysadmin team. Most
other teams will welcome any and all help, even if the time available
is limited. For example, on the qa team, one of the biggest problems
is diversity of hardware between the members. We don't have enough.

For example, when there is an update for something like hplip, we have
to ask on various mailing lists for help testing the update.

Mageia is a volunteer organization. Don't wait to be asked to help.
Just go ahead and start doing whatever you can to help. Obviously,
with packaging and sysadmin, you need permissions the average user
won't have, but with most other teams, just go ahead and start helping.

I'm in London, Ontario, Canada, so I tend to miss most irc meetings too.
The mailing lists are usually good enough.

2012/2/26 Jeff Robins <jeffrobinssae at gmail.com>:
> The posted fix no longer works because the firmware files are in a
> package called "radeon-firmware", which is in "Nonfree Updates". The
> user has to add/enable "Nonfree Updates" to a basic installation.
> Installing the rpm also runs "bootloader-config", so that section can be
> removed.

As far as I know, radeon-firmware is in Nonfree Release. I don't think
there is anything in Nonfree Updates in Cauldron since all updates go
as candidates for the Release.
See madb: http://mageia.madb.org/package/show/t_search/radeon/distrelease/1/application/0/name/radeon-firmware

>
> Proper steps, but not the proper formatting:
> 1) Add "radeon.modeset=0" to the kernel command line in GRUB
> (link on how to do that)
> 2) Boot system

Another possibility would be to boot in failsafe mode.

> 3) Add "Nonfree Updates" repository (link to how to do that) or
> download (direct link to rpm)
> 4) "urpmi radeon-firmware" or "urpmi <file-name>"
> 5) restart system
>

Another workaround is to chose "vesa" as a driver during the
installation. Then the first boot hangs, and the following boots are
okay. It could be a nice possibility for those who want nothing from
Nonfree and don't care about high graphic performance.

I don't think this worked in failsafe mode, at least not in Mageia 1.
I'll try to check on Mageia 2, Beta 1. I will have to reinstall.

Is there a difference in performance/capabilities between this and
permanently adding "radeon.modeset=0" to the kernel options?

I'll add this to the Errata, but it really only works if you read the
Errata before installing.

Is it reasonable to assume that a user who is willing to go out of
his/her way to use nothing from Nonfree can be told simply to use the
VESA driver? I don't want to leave too many complicated instructions
and it would be nice to simply list this as an option.

Thank you,

Jeff

I have now had the udisks problem also on a system into which I had booted.

The problem might be due to bugzilla #145 (urpmi fails to mount a DVD
medium). Quite an old one, had been solved during the last weeks of
Alpha, is now back in Beta. Workaround: manually create the mount point
(/media/cdrom on my system) BEFORE lauching urpmi.

The coming and going of the bug might have contributed to the confusion
on whether the udisks problem is still there or not. My (eroneous)
experience that the problem does not exist when I boot into a Beta 1 OS
partition can be explained by the fact that, after such a boot, I
normally fetch packages from the dvd and always had created that mount
point (and once it is created, it remains). I also managed to make a
system recover from the udisks problem by creating that mount point.

I still and consistently have the problem when I chroot into a system
(it might be that mounting dvds / launching udisks is handled there
differently)

There really do exist people who want high graphics performace, but who are not willing to sacrifice their freedom in order to get it. Such people have a habbit of beeing carefull of their hardware choices, and some go out of their way to ensure the hardware works without having to result in using Nonfree software.

As long as you don't do that, IMO it is even fine to become a packager.

>>> Proper steps, but not the proper formatting:
>>> 1) Add "radeon.modeset=0" to the kernel command line in GRUB
>>> (link on how to do that)
>>> 2) Boot system
>>
>> Another possibility would be to boot in failsafe mode.
>
> I don't think this worked in failsafe mode, at least not in Mageia 1.
> I'll try to check on Mageia 2, Beta 1. I will have to reinstall.

Hum, I managed to boot in failsafe mode but maybe using a little trick
(such as pressing random keys :p). I'll check when I install Mageia 2
beta 1 with the latest ISO (I tested the pre-release ISOs but not the
last one).
>
>
>> Another workaround is to chose "vesa" as a driver during the
>> installation. Then the first boot hangs, and the following boots are
>> okay. It could be a nice possibility for those who want nothing from
>> Nonfree and don't care about high graphic performance.
>>
>
> Is there a difference in performance/capabilities between this and
> permanently adding "radeon.modeset=0" to the kernel options?

I really don't know. I never tried "radeon.modeset=0". I'm not really
knowledgeable regarding kernel and drivers stuff.
>
> I'll add this to the Errata, but it really only works if you read the
> Errata before installing.

That is true, so it is not the best workaround. I just gave it for
information but the one you described seems to be a better fit for the
Errata.

>
> Is it reasonable to assume that a user who is willing to go out of
> his/her way to use nothing from Nonfree can be told simply to use the
> VESA driver? I don't want to leave too many complicated instructions
> and it would be nice to simply list this as an option.
>

I really don't know. I guess that people who want nothing from Nonfree
can simply keep the "radeon.modeset=0" option and use their system
like this.

Yes it would be good, but things haven't quite gone as planned, and so
going to need another host to do this with, if I am going to do it,
because I don't want to on my own.

Also I would like to do it at least once a month possibly more, with
most episodes having a guest from the Mageia community, be they a
contributor or just a user that would like to share their user experience.

Episodes would be done like how John suggested I expect, with them
probably all being about an hour long.

A theme tune would still need sorting out as well if going to do this.
