<PRE>I have been using Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia since 2002. I am a senior
citizen with no technical background and strictly a gui user. Mandrake
was an excellent alternative to Windows. It was easy to install and use.
Most importantly there was a community available that provided excellent
support no matter how dumb my question. This community both local and
thru mageia is still providing excellent support. Another item of equal
importance is that no matter how many mistakes, crashes etc I still have
a /home partition with my data intact about 99% of the time. I also back
it up. I installed mageia on my wife's computer and she has no problem.
The major everyday programs are excellent.

In summary, for a new user the ease of installation is most important
including the hardware support. Program stability and community support
is next in importance.

<PRE>Okay, so in normal altera style, they ship their own libz with the install
and the installer uses that libz. Only problem is that the one they ship
doesn't have the fix for gzdirect.

Simply copy a new libz into the altera_installer/bin/ directory and rename
it libz.so.1 and then the install will work.

Ah, so you wanted to say &quot;&quot;people from the forum instead of all
users&quot;? Ok, that's the target I had in mind when setting up the poll
and compiling the options. Then I was told I should advertise the poll
in the discuss list as well to reach all users. We saw what came out

&gt;<i> Assume I mean well please.
</I>
Of course I do. That's what I assume from all people in the lists and
the forum. This whole discussion is a discussion about points of view,
focus, opinions - not a fight one against the other. :)

</I>&gt;<i> &gt;&gt; &gt;tells something, I wonder how those other users in the forum will take

</I>&gt;<i> &gt;
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; I wrote mailing list where I meant forum. I assumed it was really clear
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; what my intention was so there was no need for a follow up message.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Ah, so you wanted to say &quot;&quot;people from the forum instead of all
</I>&gt;<i> users&quot;? Ok, that's the target I had in mind when setting up the poll
</I>&gt;<i> and compiling the options. Then I was told I should advertise the poll
</I>&gt;<i> in the discuss list as well to reach all users. We saw what came out
</I>&gt;<i> of this :)
</I>
There was a whole discussion that you wouldn't capture all the users. I
mean the difference between all current Mageia users and the ones who
actually submit feedback on the forum. That you direct a few more from a
mailing list, cool, but will still be a gap. Totally fine with a gap.

Just looking for some things to do / improve (my focus is GNOME
though:).

</I>&gt;&gt;<i>I can't speak for him, but here is my problem:
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> I don't do it often at all, but what I'd like to be able to do is have
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> Dolphin detect when I put a floppy in the drive and add that to the Places
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> panel, just as it now does when I put a CD or DVD in one of those drives.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> As it is now, when I put a floppy in the drive, nothing happens.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> lsmod shows that the floppy module is present. My fstab shows this for the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> floppy:
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> /dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> umask=0,users,iocharset=utf8,noauto,exec,flush 0 0
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> I can't even seem to be able to mount it by hand. $ mount /media/floppy
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> appears to work. At least, the drive spins and the busy LED comes on for a
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> while, then goes off. But, nothing shows in /media/floppy, and if I give
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> the mount command again without unmounting the drive, it still works.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> But, $ mount /media/floppy; mount /media/floppy results in these error
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> messages:
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> mount: /dev/fd0 already mounted or /media/floppy busy
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> mount: according to mtab, /dev/fd0 is already mounted on /media/floppy
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> But if I look at mtab, the floppy isn't there. And giving the mount
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> command again, on a separate line, produces no errors.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> It's as if the drive is mounted, then unmounted almost immediately. Or as
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> if the driver didn't allow enough time for the disk to be read before
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> deciding it couldn't be mounted.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> BTW, Windows XP, on the same hardware and with the same floppy, has no
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> problem with access. This is an old-style floppy drive, connected to the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> motherboard. It is not usb.
</I>&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>Not smarter, but probably been around longer :-) So few people use
floppies these days and I suspect that udev doesn't pick up the
existence of the drive. What I'd try is to get a line into /etc/fstab
to mount the drive at boot. You will need to keep a floppy in the
drive, I think, so start by rebooting with a disk inserted, once you
have your fstab sorted - you should find some help from a google
search &quot;linux floppy mount drive&quot;.

Once you have it working, make a spare floppy that is unimportant, to
keep in the drive for bootup.

Sheer guesswork, but I think that should fix it. You should be able
to mount and umount the drive in dolphin, to allow you to change
disks.

- epoll
- svn, git
- youri web interface
- maint db

in short, almost all web applications ( ie, hosted on alamut ), and the

And to complete :
- ldap will still work ( we do have a redundant setup, even if I have

- mails will still be queued, so nothing should be lost

&gt;<i> Not smarter, but probably been around longer :-) So few people use
</I>&gt;<i> floppies these days and I suspect that udev doesn't pick up the
</I>&gt;<i> existence of the drive. What I'd try is to get a line into /etc/fstab
</I>&gt;<i> to mount the drive at boot. You will need to keep a floppy in the
</I>&gt;<i> drive, I think, so start by rebooting with a disk inserted, once you
</I>&gt;<i> have your fstab sorted - you should find some help from a google
</I>&gt;<i> search &quot;linux floppy mount drive&quot;.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Once you have it working, make a spare floppy that is unimportant, to
</I>&gt;<i> keep in the drive for bootup.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Sheer guesswork, but I think that should fix it. You should be able
</I>&gt;<i> to mount and umount the drive in dolphin, to allow you to change
</I>&gt;<i> disks.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>Now, I'm not very knowledgeable in this area, but it seems strange that
if udev doesn't detect the drive that anything would happen at all when
I attempt to mount the drive manually. Yet it does. A simple $ mount
/media/floppy results in a drive that spins, but doesn't mount. And a $
mount /media/floppy; mount /media/floppy gives a message that the drive
was indeed mounted at the time of the second command, but it doesn't
seem to still be mounted by the time the prompt appears for another command.

My system has a problem with keeping a floppy in the drive. I still have
the floppy in the boot order, before going to the hard drive. If there
is a boot floppy in the drive, the system will boot from it. If a
non-boot floppy is in the drive, the BIOS (I assume) identifies it,
effectively says &quot;HUH? Now what?&quot; and waits for an answer before
continuing.

While I could remove the floppy from the boot order, since I haven't
booted from a floppy except for testing purposes in a very long time,
I'd still like to retain the option, just in case. And while it isn't
the end of the world to have to tell my computer to continue every time
I boot even though there is a confusing (to it) floppy in the drive,
it's an annoyance I'd rather not have.

So while your suggestion for a workaround is appreciated, I use my
floppy far too infrequently to do that all the time. However, I will
file it away as something to try, because on those rare occasions when I
DO want to use a floppy, I can just pop one in the drive and reboot.

Rebooting so I can continue working sounds somehow very Microsoft-like,
but whatever works...

BTW, we should try to make more stuff redundancy. Withough going up to
using DRBD
for VM images, we could:
- for SVN, it's easy to have at least a RO secondary server:
<A HREF="http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.7/svn.serverconfig.httpd.html#svn.serverconfig.httpd.extra.writethruproxy">http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.7/svn.serverconfig.httpd.html#svn.serverconfig.httpd.extra.writethruproxy</A>
if we stop write access on the master, we could wait for the slave to
keep up with the latest commits, then make it RW
when we need to stop the master.
- for bugzilla, have two VM who perform master-master replication; we
can this way
I'm not sure bugzilla support writing on both ends, but without
performing load balancing,
when needed, we could stop access to the active one, wait for
replication to finish, open
 access on the second one
- having more hypervisors and live migrating our VMs off the
hypervisor we update so that
 rebooting it doesn't impact service;
- ...

See you

IIRC, it was talked about before. A lot of us want to do this, but we weren't
sure about the growth of people yet, so we deferred the question until after
release of mga2

iinm the plan was to support each release for 18months; and possibly have LTS
versions. of this none of this is written down yet nor decided, but i expect
this discussion to be held again after mga2 is released, since the release
time could be discussed too, when the new features for mga3 will be talked

</I>Well volunteers are certainly resources. Whether they choose to work on
a project is of course up to them, but the fact they contribute makes
them a resource to the organization. In this case a vital resource that
needs to be treated well. That said, someone like myself could
potentially work in many different areas such as answering questions on
the ML or forum, updating the wiki, updating the website, writing
documentation, even light coding or packaging. I could potentially be
&quot;allocated&quot; to the area with the greatest need and I wouldn't care one
way or the other. I think it would be a shame to to see the
devs/packagers/maintainers put a lot of effort into a distro that they
loved working on but no one would use. New users are a source of new
contributors which can make the experience better for all of us.

</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> I think the formulation is to be revised.
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> If no one want to work on something, it will not happen. That's as
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i> simple as that.
</I>&gt;&gt;&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> Well volunteers are certainly resources. Whether they choose to work on
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> a project is of course up to them, but the fact they contribute makes
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> them a resource to the organization. In this case a vital resource that
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> needs to be treated well. That said, someone like myself could
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> potentially work in many different areas such as answering questions on
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> the ML or forum, updating the wiki, updating the website, writing
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> documentation, even light coding or packaging. I could potentially be
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> &quot;allocated&quot; to the area with the greatest need and I wouldn't care one
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> way or the other. I think it would be a shame to to see the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> devs/packagers/maintainers put a lot of effort into a distro that they
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> loved working on but no one would use. New users are a source of new
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> contributors which can make the experience better for all of us.
</I>&gt;<i> As you say, you have the freedom to work on what you prefer to do, and
</I>&gt;<i> given the tense you used, In infer that you are not doing it yet. So the
</I>&gt;<i> question that come to my mind is &quot;why don't you start now ?&quot;.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>Fair question, especially since I've always contributed to projects in
the past. The short answer is that I have serious personal/employment
issues which require all of my time currently, but I will do as much as
I can.
