+if it's X, it's probably the display, but since I seem to have the
+same one, I doubt that. OTOH, from time to time I've seen Firefox run
+away with resources and had to close it. After a few seconds
+everything returns to normal.

+Marc mentioned desktop effects - I do have them turned off. Jpbfree
+mentioned powertop - although I haven't used it myself I've read some
+excellent reviews - it's probably a good idea to try that.
+
+FWIW, when my system is at rest gkrellm displays the temperature as
+39'C. Currently indexing is running ( the first update of the day)
+and it is now 49'C.
