CD or DVD, either is too big to download on my dialup. a 700meg cd would take
a week to download considering that I have to keep phone line free during the
day and early evening.(that's of course as long as the server supports
resuming and the download doesn't break, which of course you don't find out
until the end, then you have to start all over. :/

People with limited connectivity want to be able to obtain media with
everything they are likely to need plus all the options if possible.

It's why I went with OpenSUSE rather than Ubuntu, Suse comes on a dualsided
DVD, 64 bit one side, 32 bit the other, live gnome and kde sessions on both
sides and lots of options so that you can install a full system of your choice
from desktop to webserver without needing a broadband connection.

Ubuntu on the other hand /only/ comes on CD with one DE and a basic desktop
only install and it assumes you have a network connection, yet it can't setup
a dialup connection during install, MDK 8.0 used to do that no problem.

Please, DVD and a way to obtain the media at a reasonable price.

Cheers
GL

1) only neoclust can upload them
2) we also need to removed « old » packages before uploading them (we can't
really add mandriva's architecture with the release & update folders...) in
order to restrain a little bit on space usage :)

So for the moment i'm quite happy with this set up
Users can install kde 4.5.2 from kde's ftp & add my ftp (or MIB's mirror since
MIB is mirroring kde4.5.2 from my ftp) to get « updates ».

>>>> There is also a build done by mikala
>>>
>>> in fact it's the same build :)
>>> I builded it& neoclust uploaded it on kde's ftp.
>>> But there's some differences now since i made some updates for bluedevil
>>> for example :)
>>
>> Then, don't forget pushing theses changes to kde's ftp if they can be
>> used by the rest of us ;)
> Well it's more difficult :
> 1) only neoclust can upload them
> 2) we also need to removed « old » packages before uploading them (we can't
> really add mandriva's architecture with the release& update folders...) in
> order to restrain a little bit on space usage :)
>
> So for the moment i'm quite happy with this set up
> Users can install kde 4.5.2 from kde's ftp& add my ftp (or MIB's mirror since
> MIB is mirroring kde4.5.2 from my ftp) to get « updates ».

Thanks. It works well. Is it going to appear on the list of KDE distro's
on this page: http://www.kde.org/info/4.5.2.php ? It would be easier to

Hi Dale:

I totally agree with this category. The different categories had only
been suggested and were still up to debate. I personally would not
recommend "Young Family" as, again, it is very subjective. I happen to
think that I have a very young family at heart but have been married for
over 25 years.

The other categories that are not subjective: "Business"; "Web
Development"; "Academia"; "Education (Primary/Secondary"; "Music"; ...
and more. These categories would be discussed at length on this mailist
before submitting the proposal. And again, different software packages
could possibly apply to more than one category, but would still be only
installed once.

These choices would then reflect that particular person or person(s)
expected usage of the distro.

Just a side note regarding this problem.
Some mirrors provide rsync access, so with the --partial option you can

An alternative for the practical information of this help information:

Personally, I have made a habit of putting this kind of help into popup
windows that pop up when you "hover" over the question.

- that avoids cluttering the display with information which half of the
users dont need

- but, having things pop up (accidentally) may be quite annoying;
therefore my help popups are controlled by two checkbuttons
 (1) enable the popup feature permanently
 (2) enable the popup feature once only

(2) turns out to be particular useful

Evidently, to use popups or not is a question of GUI style and must fit
into the overall "look" - but since this issue is being discussed: yet
another 2 cents.

>> Hence "Development" is a meaningful choice, because it describes a
>> specific kind of usage, whereas "Young Family" is basically incoherent.
>> Spell out the things you think a young family will typically use a
>> computer for, and let those USAGES be part of the list the person

> Hi Dale:
>
> I totally agree with this category. The different categories had only been
> suggested and were still up to debate. I personally would not recommend
> "Young Family" as, again, it is very subjective. I happen to think that I
> have a very young family at heart but have been married for over 25 years.
>
> The other categories that are not subjective: "Business"; "Web Development";
> "Academia"; "Education (Primary/Secondary"; "Music"; ... and more. These
> categories would be discussed at length on this mailist before submitting the
> proposal. And again, different software packages could possibly apply to more
> than one category, but would still be only installed once.
>
> These choices would then reflect that particular person or person(s) expected
> usage of the distro.
Marc,

While we agree that "Young Family" doesn't work, it seems to me some of the
other categories are similarly broad. A useful rule of thumb would be to
focus not on types of persons or groups but on activities. Since "young
family" is not an activity, whereas "web development" is, that gives us an
objective reason for preferring the latter over the former as a useful
category. Likewise for "academia". Not all academics have the same needs,
for instance adminstrators versus research professors versus adjuncts who
teach and don't do research, yet all would fall under the term "academic".
In addition, a given college professor is not going to use his or her
computer only AS a professor, and his or her other activities, playing
poker online, playing games offline, buying and selling stocks and bonds,
etc. would vary widely from person to person.

That's why I would focus more narrowly on what a person wants to DO with
his computer, in terms of *specific* tasks or activities. Early in the
process I would ask him what sorts of things he wants to use his computer
for and then list all the things he CAN do with it, each of which can be
selected or ignored. It MIGHT be useful to note, without it necessarily
being a selectable category, some of the things (and the apps that would
go with them) a typical high school teacher or rabid sports fan or
writer or stock market player might want to do or, alternatively, we
could indicate, along with the description of the uses of a particular
app or closely linked set of apps, what kinds of people might find
such app(s) useful, and why. All of this is a way of saying, which I
think we're in general agreement on, that we should be careful not
to cast too broad a net with our categories, that each should embody
a *particular* activity or *closely* linked set of activities.

>
>
>
> Dale Huckeby

Here we agree again. There would be nothing to stop that section, for
example, "Academia" to open up to subsets of "Academia-Reasearch";
"Academia-Administrator (office)"; "Academia-Teaching" etc.

And yes, if they play poker online, they would then have checked the
"Gaming" category.

The choosing of these categories are what the person wants to DO with
her/his computer. What you are suggesting is to ask her/him what they
would want to do and they would answer by categories. So why add such a
layer when we could already dispense with this layer and go straight to
the categories?

There are only a certain amount of programmes available and therefore
the same for categories. We can offer the categories. If some of the
categories are broad, then, when picked, we could have for example, a
drop down extended menu from that categories with a sub-set of more
descriptive categories. And, remember, that software packages will
bridge the categories where they fit in more than one.

We are saying the same thing but with different approaches.

I think we should just keep it simple and trust that our communities are
publishing the correct official versions. I would suspect that we are
more interested in spreading the use of Mageia than in having to tell
people to wait for a certified disk. As a general rule in retailing: "If
your client is in the store looking for an item, if you have convinced
him/her of that item, if the client leaves the store, the likelihood of
having that client come back are very slim." In other words, if someone
asks for a CD from a community, if they have to wait too long, we will
lose our chances at keeping that new user.

I, myself, would feel confident that the Communities would be dispensing
the Mageia product in good faith.

> >>> In other words, nothing focused on bandwidth-restricted users.
> >>> Unless, of course, they get the DVD (or CD) without downloading it
> >>> themselves.
> >>> Which brings to mind the idea of shipping or otherwise distributing
> >>> ready-written DVDs and live CDs. And why not a live DVD ?
> >>
> >> That's what the communities have been doing all the time. Example: the
> >> German community has an offer for such people to ask for a dvd,
> >> somebody will burn the dvd and send it to him via snail mail and he
> >> will pay (voluntarily) 5 Euros as donation to the community. As I
> >> learned, a similar offer is on in other communites as well. No problem
> >> to continue this way, /me thinks.
> >
> > We should have some kind of way to assure people that some of the
> > "community regional CDs generated by some communities themselves" are
> > "official"; and some process of generating and someone from the
> > release/security team who can validate the generated community ISO.
> >
> > do we actually have a release/security team?
> >
> > a team with people who will build ISO's/ validate community ISO's; handle
> > security updates; etc... ?
> >
> > we should, imho.
> >
> > Maarten
>
>
>
> Marc

well, in any case, we should have some kind of policy regarding packages; the
"official community versions" should be built in more or less the same way with
the same base packages, diff translations and diff other packages.

some kind of policy would be required here, to be able to handle bug reports
from that medium

also, the iso packager(s) should then be listed in bugzilla as contact for
that. in case of releases being from there.

Hmm, this would take away the freedom of choice and creation from the
makers of the special community editions. Take one of the existing
editions, the MUD LXDE Edition, which was compiled on the basis of a
Mandriva ONE but without all the Gnome/KDE stuff, without firefox and
OpenOffice, with the goal to create an edition for low ressources
machines. Having a packages policy there would limit the options for
such special editions.

There is the official edition (or editions) which will be rolled out
by Mageia, and here a policy comes without asking. But "non-official"
like a Navit Editionm or a XFCE Edition should be very free in choice
of the their packages. Otherwise special editions make no sense. If
you have to stick to a basic package set you don't need special
editions, all you need are "task" meta-packages.

Yes, then, it would be good if Mageia had a policy regarding the burning
of discs. However, let's remember that a user asking for a DVD due to
his not being able to download from the Mageia site is asking for help
to download the Mageia product from the Mageia site. She/He could in
essence be given a computer a the Community (headquarters) and he/she
could download and burn the ISO. There would be no need for a policy in
this case.

Now if a member of the Community did the same, would this be in the name
of the Mageia group.

I can see where the Community "mass" produced the discs and started
passing them to complete strangers who had no idea of Mageia, well, then
there should be a policy about the burning and of the community involvement.

I would assume that someone asking for help due to a slow connection,

> > well, in any case, we should have some kind of policy regarding packages;
> > the "official community versions" should be built in more or less the
> > same way with the same base packages, diff translations and diff other
> > packages.
>
>

I was merely stating that there should be a sort of policy:

eg:

* please only include rpms from this current stable tree"
* please include at least task-basesystem and blabla

i'm not saying stuff has to be strict, only well enough so we know that no
unstable, testing, and other rpms are on the ISOs, so when users come
complaining about something that we don't look in the wrong place...

in effect, it could be like some sort of certification.

like knowing after stable release that people aren't having the alpha's or
beta's...

i guess i worded it a bit wrong; even though i said policy (and i kinda
believe in it like that as well; some kind of security guarantees for mageia's
users), but i see it more like guidelines; like the RPM packaging wiki;
there's a policy on stuff, but in reality mdv packagers are pretty free to do

>> on both
>> sides and lots of options so that you can install a full system of
>> your choice
>> from desktop to webserver without needing a broadband connection.
That is a fantastic way of doing it.
(Well, evidently not totally on the side of fantasy :) )
If the 32-bit is put on the first side, potential users with one-sided
dvd readers could still access what they need. 64-bit users would
almost assuredly having readers capable of reading both sides.
In less rich markets, many users would still have CD writers with DVD
reading capabilities, as long as it is one-sided.
>>
>> Ubuntu on the other hand /only/ comes on CD with one DE and a basic
>> desktop
>> only install and it assumes you have a network connection, yet it
>> can't setup
>> a dialup connection during install, MDK 8.0 used to do that no problem.
If MDK 8 did it (on the "one" CDs I presume), it shouldn't be difficult
to ensure that on the first Mageia release.
>>
>> Please, DVD and a way to obtain the media at a reasonable price.
The approach in Germany - 5 euros volontary donation sounds good to me.
Basically covering the cost of the DVD and mailing.
I still have this image of you passing out free ISOs at a trade show ... :)
>>
>> Cheers
>> GL
>
> Would there be a way to restore the capability for dialup connection
> at install time?
That's currently available with Mandriva, unless I'm mistaken.
There is (at least was recently) a question for other media and network
connexion for download. The connexion could be dialup or other.
However there is the tricky problem of ensuring that the appropriate
dialup drivers are available. I understand that the "one" CDs have such
pilots, but not the "free" DVDs (which I use).
>
> I like the Community approach that Wobo suggested.
+ 1000 :)
I think being decentralised (by local community) has the advantage of
being able to adapt to local conditions, as well.
>
