> >
> > First of all, where did mikala say anything about "dropping right
> > now"?
>
> Mikala? Why do you mention him?

Mikala is John Balcaen (original poster)

> > All the apps you picked (from the Fedora page?) can probably work
> > without hal, (e.g. I don't have haldaemon running for about 4-5 months

>
> I didn't pick anything, I simply listed the apps that appear as

afaik he meant to drop the hal option from compiling, ie: compile without hal
support

> > The point is, other major distros have already gone through the
> > halsectomy phase, which means we have very rich resources to draw on.
>
> True, but again IMHO this is a major structural change, which AFAIK isn't
> supposed to happen until after Mageia 1 has been released.

I kind of agree with you, but i guess this is why it's proposed here. To see
who supports it and who doesn't.

personally, if this is as painless as mikala and ahmad think it is, i would
feel it would be ok, if it was proposed a month ago. Now, i don't know, afaik
there haven't been alot of distros yet released without hal atm. So even
though alot of people are behind this, for mageia 1, we do have older versions
of programs.

I think they are wanting to see if someone can prove them that app X would be
missing functionality if hal support was removed from now.

but imho, it needs to be tested by non-dev users before something can be
proclaimed.

Also, i guess it means they don't want to keep supporting it. but imho, mageia
release 1 isn't so far off anymore and there is still alot of work to be done
for it. I do give my blessing to drop hal completely after release 1, though.
