&quot;mgarepo sync&quot; is now working.

After updating a spec file and adding a new tarball you can run mgarepo
sync with the --dry-run option to check what would be done :
$ mgarepo sync --dry-run
D ./SOURCES/mgarepo-1.9.7.tar.bz2
A ./SOURCES/mgarepo-1.9.8.tar.bz2

And if it's ok use the -c option to commit :
$ mgarepo sync -c
D ./SOURCES/mgarepo-1.9.7.tar.bz2
A ./SOURCES/mgarepo-1.9.8.tar.bz2

If you don't use the -c option, you need to commit the changes in
SOURCES and SOURCES-bin directories manually.

For packagekit support, basically, there's a feature matrix that needs to be
completed:
<A HREF="http://packagekit.org/pk-matrix.html">http://packagekit.org/pk-matrix.html</A>

so, a feature should be implemented on both urpmi side and packagekit side
( <A HREF="http://cgit.freedesktop.org/packagekit/tree/backends/urpmi/helpers">http://cgit.freedesktop.org/packagekit/tree/backends/urpmi/helpers</A> )

the way i see it we need:
 - DownloadPackages
 - InstallFiles
 - WhatProvides
 - (possibly simulate option)

and these filters:
 - Free
 - Arch

(i don't think all features in the matrix apply, but then i don't know that
much about it.)

</I>&gt;<i> mgarepo version 1.9.8
</I>
It would be nice to place the tarball of mgarepo on the mirror, in
software/

This way, we could package it cleanly for other distributions ( ie, I
intend to use it on my fedora laptop, and I think we could push it to
cooker directly with a tarball ), devise a working procedure for that
( ie, if we want to distribute other software to be reused, as the lack
of tarball was IMHO a major problem in the past, leading to lack of
reuse ), and at least have something on mirrors.

here is the scheme I propose :
$MIRROR/software/$NAME/$NAME-$VERSION.tar.bz2
$MIRROR/software/$NAME/$NAME-$VERSION.tar.bz2.md5

and once we have a key, sign this with a pgp key for all softwares ( per
project key seems overkill ).

Ideally, we should find a way to send a tarball on the mirror, either
with automatic hooks on svn/git/whatever, or by uploading a file.

But for now, doing it manually for mgarepo seems sufficient.

<PRE>Hello!

My name is David (Zarniwoop), and I signed up a while back for
participating in the Mageia dev-team among with other teams, but since
then I haven't heard anything. I've now been in contact with Maertens
who asked me to email on the mailinglist and let you all know who I am
and what I hope to participate with, so here goes:

I'm 32 years old, working in telecommunications. In March I will start
working as a software developer for DigitalRoute (in Java).

Linux experience:
I've been using Linux since around 1997 (possibly -96). Slackware for
the first few years, and later several distributions but mostly Red
Hat, Mandriva, Slackware and Ubuntu. At work I use Ubuntu (10.04), and
at home I use Mandriva 2009.1 and 2010.1. At work and at the
University I've used UNIX a lot on servers.

Developer experience:
I have a B.Sc. in Computer Science focusing on software development
and programming. I've programmed assembly language on Amiga (68020),
and in the later year mostly C and Java with some experience in C#.
I've also worked a lot with Oracle at work.

My participation:
I haven't participated in distribution development before so I'm
pretty new at this, but I want to help out wherever I can. I think I
can be of most use with C-programming. I prefer low-level programming
as opposed to GUI, but am eager to learn so if I get some pointers
I'll try to help out wherever needed. Since I don't have any
experience from distro development I'm hoping someone more experienced
could point me in the right direction.

Regards,

David Sj&#246;lin AKA Zarniwoop

</I>&gt;<i> It would be nice to place the tarball of mgarepo on the mirror, in

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> This way, we could package it cleanly for other distributions ( ie, I
</I>&gt;<i> intend to use it on my fedora laptop, and I think we could push it to
</I>&gt;<i> cooker directly with a tarball ), devise a working procedure for that
</I>&gt;<i> ( ie, if we want to distribute other software to be reused, as the lack
</I>&gt;<i> of tarball was IMHO a major problem in the past, leading to lack of
</I>&gt;<i> reuse ), and at least have something on mirrors.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> here is the scheme I propose :
</I>&gt;<i> $MIRROR/software/$NAME/$NAME-$VERSION.tar.bz2
</I>&gt;<i> $MIRROR/software/$NAME/$NAME-$VERSION.tar.bz2.md5
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> and once we have a key, sign this with a pgp key for all softwares ( per

</I>
Good idea !

&gt;<i> Ideally, we should find a way to send a tarball on the mirror, either
</I>&gt;<i> with automatic hooks on svn/git/whatever, or by uploading a file.
</I>
I was also thinking about doing a script to automate creating tarballs
from svn/git repository for Mageia software (and can be extended to
other software maybe). Instead of adding rules in all makefiles to
generate tarballs. So you could retrieve mgarepo with this command :
 $ get-tarball mgarepo 1.9.8
And it creates mgarepo-1.9.8.tar.bz2

And we could use it to automate sending of tarballs on the mirror.

We are still quite busy producing a bootable distribution to be released
so indeed, we couldn't start formally all teams at the same moment.
But you can still help, it just requires to follow more what we do,
where we work.

Derek proposed to list junior job somewhere on the wiki, and direct
people there, so if you have others ideas on how we can help newer
community member, do not hesitate.

</I>
Distribution development is usually more a integration work.
But we still usually have bug fixes and features to code. Now, for C
coders, I do not have much ideas ( at least, nothing &quot;easy&quot;, because we
have the kernel, glibc, gcc, rpm, and so on ).

So far, we are not in a state where we can devote much time to give
detailed projects nor have a complete infrastructure ( like the forge
that we keep talking about ), so it is quite rough, but nothing that
prevent contribution.

But if you are new, you may indeed face some hurdle that can be long
forgotten by more experienced contributers ( like the workflow, the way
git/svn work, where to discuss change, etc ). So if you have question do
not hesitate, we will try to answer ( and if the answer is not clear ask
again, I usually assume a great autonomy from most people when it come
to find how to use stuff, but I guess that's because i forgot the time I
started doing free software ).

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> As a simple check, it could look for an autogen.sh script which is a

</I>
That requires to install aclocal and others tools on the server that
generate the tarball, not ideal :
- if this is our svn, that's not really his goal ( and running a script
provided by the user is not a good idea, IMHO )
- the tools may be outdated

</I>&gt;<i> from svn/git repository for Mageia software (and can be extended to
</I>&gt;<i> other software maybe). Instead of adding rules in all makefiles to
</I>&gt;<i> generate tarballs. So you could retrieve mgarepo with this command :
</I>&gt;<i> $ get-tarball mgarepo 1.9.8
</I>&gt;<i> And it creates mgarepo-1.9.8.tar.bz2
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> And we could use it to automate sending of tarballs on the mirror.
</I>
I used the attached script to create tarballs of Mandriva projects from
/soft SVN

It's pretty simple for now, but we could extend it to support git.
