<PRE>Hi,

I am supposed to be the maintainers of this software, required by base
of the system:

perl-MDV-Distribconf-4.02-1mdv2010.1.src.rpm
perl-MDV-Packdrakeng-1.13-5mdv2010.1.src.rpm

Should we remove the 'MDV' part ?

Notice changing this is not only about the rpm itself, MDV is part of
the software and changing is not an easy task.
Also the software is provided (at time, and until we do not redo ours)
by Mandriva and has been upload to CPAN under this name.

So I am favor to import it with this name (we didn't rename RPM because
it mean RedHat Package Manager...).

Does everyone agree with that ?

Thanks for the explanation...

But it was not the case when Mandrake started to use it, and neither
when Mandrake became Mandriva (The new name appeared with the rpm5
fork, and IIRC this fork appeared after Mandriva).

The problem is not only the name, but also all technical a rename can
cause. The 'MDV' is part of perl module name, then it create
dependencies between them. Changing this will force us to immediatelly
patch some applications.

There is way to create compatibility (Rafael Garcia-Suarez and I did it
to rename MDK to MDV in past).
I am just afraid by all breakage this can cause.

</I>
First they make plan for having more than one version of python, something
that I always told I will not do since no one stepped to do much to help
on the transition. In short, as long the python team will in practice be only me
( and in practice, I mean &quot;people who effectivly commit&quot; ), we will have only 1 supported
version of the stack.
( I consider python 3 to be a different language, because of the
source level incompatibility ).

There is also the issue on bytecompilation ( <A HREF="https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=50484">https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=50484</A> ).
I have exposed there the various problem, and apart from explaining
that the solution I chosed was not better than the other, no one gave a compeling
argument into one or the others alternatives.

Finally, a vast part of the policy is handling 2to3, a topic that we didn't discuss
at all, and I would not be confortable to adopt it without first looking at it and
discussing it.

Not to mention that our policy draft speak of thing they do not include
( like naming policy, for a start ).

</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> If not having those macros means we can't compile mdv SRPMS on mageia, then
</I>&gt;<i> I'd prefer we keep it.
</I>
then keep them forever ?

Because for one, mdkversion should have disappeared when the suffix was changed,
something like 5 years ago. And the fact we still rely on it is not a good sign.

More ever, even on Mandriva, most of them do not make much sense. Most of the software
are not backported ( as the usage of the macros is mainly for stuff replaced
by filetrigger ), and they are never cleaned.

On the file trigger side, we have most of the macros going back to 2009.0, where we
can't backport anything on the BS. And 2010.0 for the trigger for web application, and
I do not think we backport them usually ( as people barely see the value of packaging
them... ).

So I think we will not have much problem, except this force us to do more cleaning.
Cleaning that obviously didn't happened before, as we are needing to do it now.

So drop it, have more generic macros, and smarter policy.

For example, we do use it to wrap %_webapp_postun. We can simply undefine the macro
when we want to have it removed, and define to nothing when is it not used,
rather than using %if / %macro / %endif ( ie, 3 lignes instead of 1 ), and 2 edition of specs
instead of 1, when the macro will do a error.

</I>&gt;<i> &gt; &gt;
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; &gt; I'm strongly in favor of having it for compatibility reasons, so that

Btw, we'll have to take a decision about perl-URPMI &amp; urpmi
There've been quite a lot of commits from pok.
We've two alternatives: stick with perl-URPM &amp; urpmi from pre-rpm5
or sync with mdv.
I'm not sure pok has kept compatilibity with rpm-4 and if there'has been
any other damage.
eg: if I remember right, pok removed my perl-URPM workaround for rpm segfaulting
because he fixed it in rpm5...

I think anssi &amp; me (&amp; maybe C. Fergeau if he wants to work with
Mageia, I forgot to ask him
last time I saw him) should be able to maintain those.

&gt;<i> Patches must be named in a very explicit manner to make it very clear to
</I>&gt;<i> what version it was originally applied. To that end, a patch needs to
</I>&gt;<i> follow the convention of
</I>&gt;<i> [package_name]-[version]-[description].patch:
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> * [package_name] is the name of the package it applies against, such
</I>&gt;<i> as 'shadow-utils' or 'gnupg'
</I>&gt;<i> * [version] is the version of the program this patch was developed
</I>&gt;<i> against, such as 1.0. The name of the patch should not change, even
</I>&gt;<i> when it is rediffed, because the version allow to see in a blink since
</I>&gt;<i> when this patch has been there. If you happen to see a patch that does
</I>&gt;<i> not apply anymore, and rediff it, ask the package maintainer if it has
</I>&gt;<i> been sent upstream, and why it hasn&#8217;t been merged, and send it
</I>&gt;<i> upstream if you think it should be merged.
</I>&gt;<i> * [description] is a short description of the patch's purpose.
</I>
I would rather use comments for that :

1) saying the patch was sent upstream, with url , or date of sending the
mail ( possibily who )

2) if not sent upstream, say clearly &quot;not upstreamable because foo&quot;

3) if coming from upstream, link to the commit upstream

And for people who want to sent upstream patch, iptutils is full of
patch to comment ( and so are lots of packages ).

I think the general reason was that you quite often want to use %name in
other places too. e.g. Obsoletes: %name-redundant-old-subpackage

Ditto for %version.

While you can use these without %defining them (just by virtue of them
being the Name: or Version: etc., I think it's more declarative and
deterministic to define them.

There could be other reasons too (e.g. update scripts?) and also just to
keep the critical things right at the top of the file for easy access.

Other than that I can't think of any reasons.

'Name: foo' will always define %{name} now (which has been the case for ages),
