</I>&gt;<i> &gt; &gt; those we contrib in both distros. I mean for example me: i maintan squid
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; &gt; and snort (for example). I wonder if there is a way so i may affect
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; &gt; package once and build in both distros (because these packages for example
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; &gt; wont change, i mean patches and compiled options will be the same).
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; Given that your squid could be built from /exactly/ the same package+tarballs
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; in both Mandriva and Mageia[1], you could theoretically rsync between your 2
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; local svn checkouts and then checkin.. But not the most beautiful procedure.
</I>&gt;<i> &gt;
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; BUT, if it had been for git-based package tracking:
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; .. you would have 2 branches at the same git repo, for Mandriva, Mageia. And
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; one, third, for the official upstream sources, actually. You would be able to
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; hack one branch and let squid build, install etc. Then, you would /merge/ from
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; one distro branch to the other, or cherry-pick, or rebase, or anything
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; suitable for your changes. No need to have identical code in both of branches,
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; at all.
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; And then simply push to Mageia, Mandriva, Fedora, SuSe, Debian, the upstream
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; squid etc, the N-th mirror of Mageia and so on...
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; Moreover, if somebody else had hacked squid for Mandriva, you would be able to
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; fetch his/her changes, merge the ones you wanted into Mageia, and repeat the
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; &quot;push&quot; step.
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; You see, having multiple masters, multiple committers is what git is unique
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; at. It is where svn sucks, by contrast.
</I>&gt;<i> &gt;
</I>&gt;<i> it could be possible as well with git-svn no ?
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I don&#8217;t think mandriva will move to git anytime soon, it was planned
</I>&gt;<i> (IIRC spuk worked on it) but it was not finished.
</I>
No, not on git, on a different system with separated svn for tarball.

Additionally, that's what we plan to deploy for mageia.

&gt;<i> 'Twas brillig, and P. Christeas at 07/11/10 13:39 did gyre and gimble:
</I>&gt;<i> &gt;&gt; I don&#8217;t think mandriva will move to git anytime soon, it was planned
</I>&gt;<i> &gt;&gt; (IIRC spuk worked on it) but it was not finished.
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; Not even Mageia. Which is sad.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Well this is due to time constraints primarily as we need to get
</I>&gt;<i> something out of the door soon and this likely means using subversion,
</I>&gt;<i> but this is not totally decided yet and I, for one, will very much be
</I>&gt;<i> pushing for a git migration for package management as soon as practicable.
</I>
Well, a first step would be to first document the proposal, discuss it,
then later have agreement from other packagers, see how it will impact
the bs ( ie, what part will need to be changed ), do the change on code
( repsys, web interface, install a git viewer, and change on mdvsys
too ), and do the conversion ( which may requires some tests, and lots
of time, and some down time ( so this also requires coordination )).
And also update the documentation.

Provided that someone indeed step to do all of this, I see no reason to
not have it happen. if no one does, then it won't, as simple as that :)
Beware, this can take quite a lot of time
( <A HREF="http://lwn.net/Articles/409635/">http://lwn.net/Articles/409635/</A> ).

But for the moment, of course, the priority is to setup a replica
( minus some minor cleaning ) of Mandriva build system.
So such change will have to wait ( in the event someone already did the
hard work in secret with ready to apply patches and already converted
repository ).

before being changed

We can of course rediscuss the build system before deploying ( last
time, it took something like 2 months ) and then wait on people sending
patchs ( last time, it also took a lots of time, proof is that mdv still
use the old BS ).

Or we can simply deploy what we have, as this is the fastest option.

So if anybody want to make change right now, no problem, just send
patchs against the puppet configuration ( who is on
<A HREF="svn://svn.mageia.org/svn/adm/">svn://svn.mageia.org/svn/adm/</A> for anonymous checkout ), we will review
and apply them.
