I've never been able to do +> it. +> + +There is a background problem here: there is no _good_ color, or there is none +of your devices that is the _right_ one. +At most, you can calibrate your monitor to show the same that will be printed +on your printer, but none guarantees you that it is the _true_ color. + +To do that, you have first to be sure that your printer prints ok. For that, you +can just get a professional industry-printed color chart, like Pantone, and +a digital version, and try to print that and compare. Missing Pantone, you +can try with the Macbeth Color Chart: + +http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_chart +http://www.ae5d.com/macbeth.html +http://www.babelcolor.com/main_level/ColorChecker.htm + +or just google for it. But to compare you need one you don't have printed +yourself. + +And once your printer is calibrated, start working with your monitor and +your scanner... + +Color calibration is not an easy subject. I have not checked Linux nowadays, +but in the past Macs were the best for color calibrated works. + +Theoretically, if you set your profiles for your printer and monitor from +a database (if you are lucky and your models are there), you should automagically +see what you print, and even get the same printings on two printers with +different profiles. + +-- +J.A. Installed gwenview and managed to print a jpeg file +without any difficulty. It came out a bit dark but the colour balance +looked OK. A bit of twiddling with the gamma would help (used +judiciously so as not to distort the colours). + +For ten years or more I have used command-line printing without much +trouble but of late it seems that CUPS or HPLIP or both ignore +command-line options like position and scaling so I gave up on +photoprinting. Gqview and the gimp just acted as a wrapper for the lpr +command and suffered from the same problems with sizing and positioning. + +Will try gwenview on my Photosmart Premium C310. Photocopies look fine, +with a bit of a shift in the colour brightness (hue?), as usual towards +the darker side so I would expect photo printing to be similar. + +I had an HP7260 at one time and that had no difficulty with lpr. I've never been +>> able to do +>> it. +>> +> +> There is a background problem here: there is no _good_ color, or there +> is none +> of your devices that is the _right_ one. +> At most, you can calibrate your monitor to show the same that will be +> printed +> on your printer, but none guarantees you that it is the _true_ color. +> +> To do that, you have first to be sure that your printer prints ok. For +> that, you +> can just get a professional industry-printed color chart, like Pantone, and +> a digital version, and try to print that and compare. Missing Pantone, you +> can try with the Macbeth Color Chart: +> +> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_chart +> http://www.ae5d.com/macbeth.html +> http://www.babelcolor.com/main_level/ColorChecker.htm +> +> or just google for it. But to compare you need one you don't have printed +> yourself. +> +> And once your printer is calibrated, start working with your monitor and +> your scanner... +> +> Color calibration is not an easy subject. The printed copy was darker in the +red areas and slightly lighter in the yellow green area. A scan into +gimp showed a slight darker red than the original.
