I've installed mga2 from Cauldron to Beta 3 (as well as mga1) on a
handful of different boxes. Some have installed without problem, some
required a bit of effort to get running (ATI/AMD video card issues), and
at least one won't run at all. I've filed a few bug reports and the only
show-stopper until now was fixed. The others are minor and I can work
around them. Overall a very good performance for non-release software.

My reason for posting is the laptop that won't run at all. I've spent
hours and tried every trick I know, but even though it installs without
errors I still can't get it to boot to anything except a rescue desktop.
I've tried a clean install and an upgrade from mga1 and the results are
the same. This laptop is important to me and at this point I'm very
frustrated, but since mga1 and many other distros run on this hardware
I'm determined to make it work.

I don't really have a lot of clues to offer. After installation it goes
through the boot sequence and fails with either a blank screen for the
default ATI driver, or a multi-color pixelated screen with the vesa
driver. I've never seen the vesa driver lock up before. At times I've
managed to get to the command line and discovered that in addition the
networking won't work, either wired or wireless. I'd gladly submit a bug
report or comment on an existing one, but I don't know where to start on
this one.

If you boot a rescue CD, mount the root partition, change the runlevel
in /etc/inittab to 3 rather than 5, and reboot, do you get to a login
prompt with no problem ? If so, your problem is in starting X, most
likely related to the ATI video card.

Check /boot/grub/menu.lst to see if the entry you're booting has the
kernel parm "nokmsboot". If it doesn't, add it. None of the free
drivers for ATI will work without this. Cauldron is adding this now,
but I don't know about b3. The radeon driver still won't work, but it
won't misbehave as badly. The vesa driver may work then.

From the command line, add the nonfree repositories and install both
the fglrx driver and the kernel-firmware-nonfree. If that works, then
you just have an ATI chip that won't work with vesa.

> At times I've managed to get to the command line and discovered that

From either a tty command line or a root terminal window, run
drakconnect. See whether the NetworkManager box is checked in the
options panel for the wired interface. If it is, uncheck it, complete
drakconnect and run "service networkmanager stop" and "systemctl disable
NetworkManager.service". Then reboot and see if it comes up. Same for
wireless.

If your NICs worked under mga1, NM is most likely the culprit.

I am getting a notification popup several tens of seconds after each kde
startup.

The Notification says:

Error: Service disabled
Error while initializing DBus
Disabling the service

Sounds frightening, but does not appear to have any negative effects.

I think to remember having seen a discussion on this subject and filed
it away as being dealt with - that is evidently not so. Am I the only
one to see this issue?

It is certainly not a blocker bug, but - unless it is something specific
to my installation - more than just a small beauty spot on the face of
Mageia 2.

Some more details (in case I need to file a bug):
- 100% reproducible (but delay after kde startup varies between 15 and
 50 seconds)
- the only trace in thelogs I can find is (probably) a line in
 .xsession-errors that says

QGraphicsLinearLayout::removeAt: invalid index 1

(the message does not have any evident relation to the DBus
notification, but it is not in .xsession-errors until the notification
 happens.

This reply from Arch-Linux (with Gnome) may help. I don't think we
have an .xinitrc, but the idea of two users is new to me. I get beside
the Akonadi icon on a right-click, that it is disabled, but nothing
more. I am used to running Totem under KDE, and being told that the
Gnome dbus service can't be found. Totem starts up all the same.

In my case, the KDE theme sounds about 30 seconds later, but there are
no messages.

basically dbus runs a system bus and a user bus. rc.conf starts the

> call: Transaction is destructive."

OK, there may be several issues in play here.

Cauldron currently starts plymouth on tty1 to display boot messages, and
I think the design relies on a Display Manager (GDM, KDM) signalling
plymouth to exit, so if you boot to runlevel 3 (where no DM is staretd,
plymouth currently hangs around on tty1, and it looks like it's hung.
However, if you do ALT-F2 (or 3, 4, etc), switching to an available tty
that isn't running X should start getty there and give you a login prompt.

What I'm trying to determine is whether your line-mode tty video works
without X in the picture.

If you could read "Starting speech dispatcher", then your tty was
working, and the blank screen was probably the result of starting X.
Maybe with systemd now, there is a different way of setting the
runlevel. Try booting in safe mode, doing ALT-F2, logging in as root,
and running XFdrake. Then uncheck the box which says start graphical
mode at boot, and try again.

The "Transaction is destructive" thing is a known open bug.

>> If your NICs worked under mga1, NM is most likely the culprit.
>>
>
> I install over the network so the wired NIC is working during
> installation. The wireless NICs work as well but they usually need
> firmware installed first. I'll take a look at this once I can reliably
> get that far. Thanks for the help.
>

If the wired NIC works during installation, then it doesn't need
firmware, and there's no reason it shouldn't work in the new system.

It's common for wireless to take a few reboots, since the install
doesn't detect wireless and install everything it should. Instead, when
you run drakconnect to add the wireless interface, it kicks urpmi to
install wireless-tools and some other packages. It also detects your
wireless NIC, and modifies boot files to load the appropriate kernel
driver (if it recognizes it).

So it's not unusual for the initial attempt at adding wlan0 to show only
"Use a windows driver with ndiswrapper" until you reboot and the kernel
recognizes the device. Then using drakconnect should show your actual
device.

I haven't used any NICs that require firmware not included with the
install, so I don't know how automatic that is.

Once you get to the point of defining eth0 or wlan0 and not having it
come up, you can do the checks for NM.

When I boot using safe mode ALT-F2 does nothing. Interestingly
CTL-ALT-DEL works even though there is no command prompt.

I installed mga2 as an upgrade to mga1 so the old boot entry is still
there. When I use it the system boots to the regular login screen, but
the mouse and keyboard don't work so there is nothing I can do from there.

In the past I've used the net install disc and done an "upgrade" of the
installed system. Nothing is actually installed but it does allow me to
change some settings. Perhaps use that to uncheck the graphic interface box?

>>>

Correct, the wired NIC doesn't require firmware. The built in wireless
NIC needs additional firmware. When you set up the interface it asks to
install the firmware and it always has worked fine after that. The
PCMCIA wireless NIC has needed firmware in the past, but mga1 seems to
install everything it needs during installation. Installing Linux on a
laptop has always been difficult, but despite my current woes laptop
support has gotten much better over the years.

It sounds like you have one of the ATI chips which won't even work in
text mode without firmware. Did you ever check your /boot/grub/menu.lst
for nokmsboot ? If not, try adding it in safe mode, and then:
 cd /boot/grub
 ./install.sh

this sounds crazy but the point it locks up at seems to be related to
whether I select the default boot image to boot immediately or just let

comes up, use the up or down arrow to move off of the default selection
and back onto it. That will disable the autoboot timer. Let it sit
