>>>
>>> The reason i state this is just so that people from that community could
>>> get help easily.
>>>
>>> also, it could kind of be there to help the iso packagers to make working
>>> release media.
>>
>> Thanks for the reply Maarten.
>>
>> Yes helping with out with the packagers, I imagine, is always welcomed.

>> Marc
>
> i guess i worded it a bit wrong; even though i said policy (and i kinda
> believe in it like that as well; some kind of security guarantees for mageia's
> users), but i see it more like guidelines; like the RPM packaging wiki;
> there's a policy on stuff, but in reality mdv packagers are pretty free to do
> it how they want.
>

Ah, I see. I guess at this point, we would have to have direction from
an SC member as to how to handle this situation. But, IMHO, we should
still keep the policies/guidelines as easy as possible as we would like
to get the distro into as many hands as possible.

I'm having the following issues on x86_64 that maybe someone else have
noticed too:

* I lost my plasdma activities: before I had three of them, now
right-clicking on the desktop and selecting "Activities..." shows an
empty widget, there's not even present the current worspace currently
on use.
* The kmixer and klipper systray icons are changed for the old pre-4.5
ones after a couple of seconds of showing up on the system tray. I
mean, I log in into KDE and I see the gray kmixer and klipper icons
from KDE 4.5.x, but after a second or two, both disappear and then
appear the old icons that those apps used on KDE prior to 4.5.
* Scrolling over kmixer to change volume doesn't show the volume level
popup, but It does change volume.
* Kopete doesn't change it's icon to the spinning one when a message
is received, so the only way to know that you received a message is to
hear the notification. When you click kopete's icon, it's main window
will maximize and you will see the new message icon over the contact's
that send it.

This only happened on x86_64, on my laptop with i586 none of those
issues happened. I'll change my repos to MIB ones and see if there's
any update that fixes this issues.

hum, i'm not using kopete,
There's no configuration or notification set up to for this ?
> This only happened on x86_64, on my laptop with i586 none of those

I'm using also x86_64.
There is a few update in fact :
kdepim 4.4.7,some crash fixed from the future 4.5.3 for kdebase4-workspace &
kdelibs4, digikam 1.5 & kipi-plugins, and the rc4-1 version of bluedevil
instead of rc4 (it's fixing a crash on startup when bluedevil is available)

>
>>
>> While we agree that "Young Family" doesn't work, it seems to me some
>> of the
>> other categories are similarly broad. A useful rule of thumb would be to
>> focus not on types of persons or groups but on activities. Since "young
>> family" is not an activity, whereas "web development" is, that gives
>> us an
>> objective reason for preferring the latter over the former as a useful
>> category. Likewise for "academia". Not all academics have the same
>> needs,
>> for instance adminstrators versus research professors versus adjuncts
>> who
>> teach and don't do research, yet all would fall under the term
>> "academic".
>> In addition, a given college professor is not going to use his or her
>> computer only AS a professor, and his or her other activities, playing
>> poker online, playing games offline, buying and selling stocks and
>> bonds,
>> etc. would vary widely from person to person.
>>
>> That's why I would focus more narrowly on what a person wants to DO with
>> his computer, in terms of *specific* tasks or activities. Early in the
>> process I would ask him what sorts of things he wants to use his
>> computer
>> for and then list all the things he CAN do with it, each of which can be
>> selected or ignored. It MIGHT be useful to note, without it necessarily
>> being a selectable category, some of the things (and the apps that would
>> go with them) a typical high school teacher or rabid sports fan or
>> writer or stock market player might want to do or, alternatively, we
>> could indicate, along with the description of the uses of a particular
>> app or closely linked set of apps, what kinds of people might find
>> such app(s) useful, and why. All of this is a way of saying, which I
>> think we're in general agreement on, that we should be careful not
>> to cast too broad a net with our categories, that each should embody
>> a *particular* activity or *closely* linked set of activities.
Nor too narrow
>>
>> Dale Huckeby
>
> Here we agree again. There would be nothing to stop that section, for
> example, "Academia" to open up to subsets of "Academia-Reasearch";
> "Academia-Administrator (office)"; "Academia-Teaching" etc.
Good point
>
> And yes, if they play poker online, they would then have checked the
> "Gaming" category.
Which could have "cards" among other sub-categories ...

> The choosing of these categories are what the person wants to DO with
> her/his computer. What you are suggesting is to ask her/him what they
> would want to do and they would answer by categories. So why add such
> a layer when we could already dispense with this layer and go straight
> to the categories?
Right - the more streamlined the better. As long the user has the choices.

> There are only a certain amount of programmes available and therefore
> the same for categories. We can offer the categories. If some of the
> categories are broad, then, when picked, we could have for example, a
> drop down extended menu from that categories with a sub-set of more
> descriptive categories.
I like the idea of a line that expands, like in Rpmdrake categories, or
the (Gnome) Nautilus file browser.

> And, remember, that software packages will bridge the categories where
> they fit in more than one.
>
> We are saying the same thing but with different approaches.
>
> Marc

It seems we're approaching a consensus.

I'm also beginning to see a convergence here ... with the XDG menu
system used by Mandriva.
We probably want to keep the installation choices somewhat simpler.

So I see the installation, after the language selection (of one or more
languages), continuing with the choice of the desktop environment.
I would have KDE / Gnome / Other (which expands to show the others
available) / or none (for console only)
With an "information" button to give the implications, including the
fallback light desktops for KDE and Gnome.

After that, a dialog for the activity categories, which would have
default application selections corresponding to the desktop environment
chosen.
We could preselect certain categories to make it easier for users who
don't want to bother choosing.

We list the categories, each of which is expandable to show any
sub-categories, and further to show the individual applications, for
more detailed selection/deselection.
Particularly useful for more advanced users.
The advantage of this is we can have something suitable for all types of
users, without requiring configuration or non-intuitive choices.
Those who want quick easy choices, and those - like myself - who want to
fine-tune which packages are installed in one pass.
Required packages such as libraries should probably remain hidden,
although they would be visible as now in Rpmdrake after the installation.

> Personally, I have made a habit of putting this kind of help into
> popup windows that pop up when you "hover" over the question.
>
> - that avoids cluttering the display with information which half of
> the users dont need
>
> - but, having things pop up (accidentally) may be quite annoying;
> therefore my help popups are controlled by two checkbuttons
> (1) enable the popup feature permanently
> (2) enable the popup feature once only
>
> (2) turns out to be particular useful
>
> Evidently, to use popups or not is a question of GUI style and must
> fit into the overall "look" - but since this issue is being discussed:
> yet another 2 cents.

Personally I don't like popups for anything more than a few words, but
I'm not strongly opposed either.
Popups do have a disadvantage if the user, for whatever reason, does not
have a working mouse available. Athough admittedly awkward, one can
navigate the installation process using tab, shift/tab.
As well, what would happen if the user wants to look at the popup info a
second time if (2) is selected ?
Of course, with buttons, and maybe an option "(3) no popups", we could
have the best of both worlds. :)

>> there's a policy on stuff, but in reality mdv packagers are pretty

>>
>
> Ah, I see. I guess at this point, we would have to have direction from

> still keep the policies/guidelines as easy as possible as we would
> like to get the distro into as many hands as possible.
>
> Marc

Good idea to have some sort of policy on non-official ISOs, but I would
only be interested, at least initially, in helping distribute exact
copies of official ISOs. And those will have checksums (md5 and/or
sha1) available on Mageia respositories and official mirrors, that
anyone could verify. (Very small files to download.)
We should make sure that we verify any official ISOs that we distribute.
I'm sure that is what the German community does.

>>
>> Yes, that is the spirit of my suggestion (and that does not go far

>>
>> I start wondering: is there a hidden formal issue with sending CDROMs

>> Would be good if - once the time comes - Mageia formulates a couple of
>> words on what Mageia considers good practice, and what not.
Good idea.

> Yes, then, it would be good if Mageia had a policy regarding the
> burning of discs. However, let's remember that a user asking for a DVD
> due to his not being able to download from the Mageia site is asking
> for help to download the Mageia product from the Mageia site. She/He
> could in essence be given a computer a the Community (headquarters)
> and he/she could download and burn the ISO. There would be no need for
> a policy in this case.
>
> Now if a member of the Community did the same, would this be in the
> name of the Mageia group.
>
> I can see where the Community "mass" produced the discs and started
> passing them to complete strangers who had no idea of Mageia, well,
> then there should be a policy about the burning and of the community
> involvement.
Yes. We really would prefer that Mageia ISOs not be considered
"interesting" frisbees :)
>
> Marc

There is already a policy in the GPL license - we are free to copy and
distribute as long as we don't remove copyright notices.
So there is no problem copying and distributing an identical copy of an
official ISO.
Any non-GPL package on the ISO would be freely distributable with the ISO.
(Mandriva/Mageia have the right to distribute the ISO with its content,
and are not adding any restrictions to those that copy the ISO.)
This also applies to any complete package from an ISO or repository,
with the possible exception of certain non-free packages, according to
their particular license.

I can see Mageia having suggestions on best practices for distributing
ISOs, for instance always verifying the checksum, and ensuring that the
checksum is available on an accessible web site.
Since Mageia and mirrors will already have the checksums available for
official ISOs, it is easier to distribute copies of official ISOs.

>
>
>
>
>
> - André
>

Yes, this is it. So, all that we would have left to organise is (in
consultation with the Mageia membership and its expert opinion on this):

* make a list of categories and sub-categories
* for each "tag-able" list, create a list of appropriate software
packages best suited for that category.

Always thinking about slow internet connections, or no connection at
all (in Ardèche, in Burkina Faso, in Niger etc...)

Three months after the last version of Mandriva has appeared, I have
downloaded more than 700 Mo of updates (some updates updating previous
updates)

If someone installs Mageia with a DVD or CD provided by somebody, he
will get more and more rpms to update as much as time goes on.... (for
instance if Mageia 2011 appears april 2011, I send a DVD to my friend
who installs it on his new computer in september 2011 .... and he will
be asked to update his installed Mageia)
If he cannot download a CD iso because of his connection, he cannot
download 700 Mo of updates !!!

It might be useful to provide
"updated" DVD iso or CD iso, some time after the release was provided,
so that those burned DVD or CD can be sent to people with slow internet
connection, freeing them of huge updates to download !!!

The only solution I have for now with Mandriva is to keep a copy of
each dowloaded updated rpm in a folder, and to fill a DVD with those
rpms (it is a DVD of updates, not an updated DVD...) and to send it.
My friend copyes those rpms in a specially created folder, and add this
folder as a source in rpmdrake... (not so easy for a newbie) and he can
get an up to date working Mandriva immediately...

my 2 pence

Le 2010-11-01 06:00, Philippe DIDIER a écrit :
>
>
>
>
(not so easy for a newbie) and he can
> get an up to date working Mandriva immediately...
>
> my 2 pence
>

Actually, good point.

Would there be a better way to do this?

It's a shame that Mandriva/Mageia does not add the updates to the
official ISO. This would then not be an issue.

Perhaps we could ask for this as a feature?

Are there any devs on the list who could provide some opinion?

OK, you know what I'll say to this, I like it!

Remembering that we are trying to keep the amount of data down for
dial-up connections:

Re: Mageia One: I think the idea behind the iso's was to try to divide
earth into 6 "language" areas in the hopes of supplying an iso that was
specifically tragetted to each specific areas. If we were to offer only
1 basic iso how much more data would a user have to potentially need to
download and would this add a considerable time to her/his download time?

As the original thread spoke of supplying a member with a Mageia disc
from a local Community, would the Community be able to provide a copy of
the Mageia One disc along with the translation required by the user?
Would this be possible?

Re: the main Mageia ISO: a "Mageia Update Pack" would be great. I
wonder, why would Mageia not offer this by default for download? Is
there a reason for this?

As the original thread was about supplying users with a copy of a Mageia
disk, the local Community could then supply the user with a copy of the
"Mageia Update Pack" disc.

I'm not a developer but I think the effort for new isos every month
is to high for the profit.
I'm generally for a procedure with small steps. Let's start with the
basics so we can evaluate the power of the community. Later we can
add some specials (like monthly builds, ...) step by step. I thinks
that’s far more effective, than starting with a million features and
realizing that we are overstrained with the work.

In this explicit issue, we need to know what release cycle we will
use. For example, if we use 12 month cycle with "light" rolling, I
found a new build every 3 month for appropriate. If we remain with
the current release cycle, I don't really see a profit in releasing
monthly builds. So we should take this in account.

Agreed. Much of this whole discussion is touching topics which will be
an issue in the future and depending on decisions which will have to
be made before. What I wrote previously about developpers and
contributors is also an issue here: we don't know anything yet about
the ressources we will have once the initial hype is gone. In every
project you will see a lot of people being very enthousiastic about it
all. But how many people will be there when the work is on its way,
you can't say by now.

There were some interesting ideas in this thread and I am sure some of
those will be implemented or set to work once the time has come.

So let's wait until the framework is there, until the first final is
out, until we see what kind of release model Mageia will use and until
we really see what ressources are in the contributor's and in the
user's corner. Then we can talk about what will be required in this
area.

Unless you are prepared to do full intensive QA on the updated distro,
