>> Hello,
>>
>> So instead of guessing, or saving on the internet maybe a quick
>> question at the beginning of the install asking ´How do you rate your
>> experience with linux?´ beginner medium advanced expert... new ones
>> should get a small list to choose programs from (tested and easy to
>> use soft)... and some easy way to find what isn´t in the small list
>>
>> Dan.
>
> Interesting idea.
> This idea nicely complements something in a lot of posts - having groups
> available to select during installation, instead of or as well as
> detailed selection by package.
> Suggested groups have included young family, home office, education
> (preschool/primary/secondary/post-secondary), small business, gamer,
> developer, and many others that I can't think of for the moment.
> These groups would be overlapping, as applications like Firefox and
> OpenOffice (or one of the variants, Go-oo or LibreOffice) would probably
> be in several groups.
>
> Now during installation there are only Server and Internet user groups,
> if I remember correctly.
>
> I like the 4 levels - a lot better than only beginner/expert.
> And the small list for new users.
> And much easier to implement than guessing.
> Another advantage being that those helping (on forums, etc) would be
> able to know what exactly the user is seeing.
> Definitely worth considering. :)
>
> - André
>

I am more in favour of the sequence, at installation, when you get to
the point where you choose "KDE" "GNOME" "Custom", the user picks
"Custom" where she/he is presented with options for "Young Family";
SOHO; "Gaming" "Education"; "Business"; "Development"; etc. The user
could pick more than one choice that will bst suit the description of
his present preference of installation. Of course some of the packages
may appear in one or more list, but there will be no doubling of
installed packages. These options are very clear and easily
understandable by all.

Categories such as "Beginner" "Medium" "Advanced" and "Expert" are very
subjective terms. What one may consider an "Advanced" person may really
be a "Medium" user by someone else's definition and etc.

Salut Marc
Why don't we start up a Canadian community to do this, among other things.
And I can do local promotion in the Montreal area, and you southern
Ontario / Toronto ?
And maybe we can find someone out west ?
(Mailing DVDs would be less expensive locally.)

For the donation part, would we have to set up some sort of formal
organization (here in Canada, maybe provincially) ?

Maybe we should contact some US Mandriva mirrors to see if someone would
be interested in doing that there ?

Hello,

´Categories such as "Beginner" "Medium" "Advanced" and "Expert" are very
subjective terms. What one may consider an "Advanced" person may really
be a "Medium" user by someone else's definition and etc.´

I was referring to the install and remove software program, that it would
benefit a way of showing packages for each kind of user...
also if some way it would be possible to guess the user´s intentions after let´s
say 100 installed packages....

My recommendation: make it a principle that questions from the installer

>> I am just wondering if this is the same in the US?
>>
>> Marc
>
>
>
>
> - André
>
>

Sounds good to me.

I am a little slow moving these days. I am recovering from 2 major back
surgeries and have just relearned how to walk. But, yes, we could start
a community at the national level and start organising in the meantime.
I am already on the marketing team here.

BTW I am also organising the Canadian marketing team Wiki with the
LibreOffice project. You can see the structure that I have put together
here: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/US-Marketing . Canada
is a junior partner to the US Marketing Team until we have more members.
But a lot of the information there could apply to the Mageia Canadian
Community.

Anyway, I have server space if we need some.

I am not sure if the SC would have any suggestions on this?

> > Which brings to mind the idea of shipping or otherwise distributing
> > ready-written DVDs and live CDs. And why not a live DVD ?
>

> Hello,
>
> ´Categories such as "Beginner" "Medium" "Advanced" and "Expert" are very
> subjective terms. What one may consider an "Advanced" person may really
> be a "Medium" user by someone else's definition and etc.´
>

I've always looked at it this way:

If your target customer is "advanced" or "expert", then they are
capable of selecting their own packages to suit their preferences.
Mandriva addressd this by offering a "minimal install" which was
reasonably obscured from a novice user.

For everybody else, a preferred selection of applications in several
categories was offered. my opinion is that the categories were overly
broad and they installed applications of dubious utility. Again, my
opinion is the choices be limited to KDE desktop, GNOME desktop and
LXDE desktop and "select individual packages", all with single
instances of applications (for example, not three different MP3
players, two word processors and so on). As novice users gain
experience, they can explore and add other applications.

How aout things like samba and sshd, you ask? Those could be done with
a wizard in a separate part of the install (with an appropriate
explanation of why one might want them) like ntp and CUPS.

In summary, the Mandriva approach is a good compromise only in need of
a few tweaks and the install "choices" could be made simpler since
network servers and the like are usually in the "advanced" user
domain.

> My recommendation: make it a principle that questions from the
> installer come with a short explanation (evidently, there are exceptions).

Exactly.
At least one other distribution is excellent compared to Mandriva in
this regard.

On reflection, asking the user their level of experience with Linux is
too subjective to be useful. A user with extensive development
experience in other environments could think "beginner", a non-computer
person who has a lot of experience with another Linux distribution could
think "expert", but the first could be closer to expert, and the second
much closer to beginner.

But considering the point of the question, that the user have enough
information to install easily and with confidence, well written short
explanations go a long way to satisfying this need.
Perhaps a well-phrased question, with an "information" button to the
right to display a sub-window with the explanation. This explanation
should be in terms understandable by those with little computer
experience, but with enough info for the more advanced user.
(This may seem contradictory; it just needs someone with good
documentation skills.)

Combining (1) short explanations
with (2) installation groups
and (3) folding of related packages to one line (expandable)
will greatly help newer users, while making more detail and options
available for advanced users.

another 2 cents :)

Actually, I have one tweak to suggest which underlines your comments
about duplicity in services (multiple editors. mp3 players and so
forth.) Much of this can be reduced by employing a much stricter
demarcation between GNOME and KDE. Since we do not use KDE we
automatically search for 'kde' in MCC and remove packages it finds as
part of our general install protocol. If the user does NOT install KDE,
only GNOME, then why should kde packages be installed anyway - some 80
or so the last time we went through this? Some of this has been made
very apparent with the current upgrading of python services.
