Why not have a field for primary/secondary maintainer ?
By default, the first maintainer would be primary, subsequent
maintainers secondary.
This field being changable as desired.
That way, there is total flexability to have whatever mix of
primary/secondary maintainers the group of packagers for a particular
package wishes.

I suspect that it would be better to have a separate database for this
than mageia-app-db, to avoid contamination of errors, etc.
By keeping it separate, the packagers would have total control to
maintain the list according to what is actually packaged by Mageia.
Note that mageia-app-db will probably be listing 3rd party packages, not
carried by mageia.
In any case, it would be better to have a separate table for packager info.

my 2 cents :)

well, i don't know; in effect; IMHO the model is no more than a groupname with

if the groupname is equal to the package name; and if they are in a separate

AFAIK the contents changes and how it's used, but not the model itself.

1 srpm -&gt; 1 to N maintainers,

and that's all.

Later, we can think more thoroughly about this, and likely rewrite.
But the initial goal was to reuse mdvdb because

and dirty django application with basic CRUD to manage that, it should be fine.

i'm ok with quick and dirty.

tbh, i would like to have this in ldap; since it's related to groups;
especially if we will woul mailgroups for each package, the member (or
uniqueMember) can be used to get all the maintainers for that package, and an
extra attribute to have a primary maintainer.

in effect: being co-maintainer could even be validated by the primary
maintainer; if primary maintainer leaves, a co-maintainer can grab the primary
maintainership; if no maintainers are there, someone can become maintainer
without checks, and becomes primary maintainer directly. only valid packagers
can grab maintainership (but novices can too)

packagers should have an ldap attribute for the level: none, novice, full,
security (where none can be omitted and security means he can do security
updates)

(if you haven't seen it yet; i'm a fan of having everything directly related
to auth and groupings of users into an ldap)

and very dismissive (a volunteer and new poster offering to do something
that other users will appreciate immediately get's confronted with the
exagerated argument that what he wants to do will cause too much

Anyway, like I said I think we should be following more the principle of

We could have something that run the compilation in the background. That's how
gitorious do for lenghty operation, something based on stomp.

You install the specfile, it check if the server is up, if not, it start it, it
send a message &quot;compile this&quot;, and then urpmi finish.

The next issue would be how to communicate with the user that the kernel is ready.
Maybe using s2u, or dbus, i do not know.

Using this method would also ease the distribution of custom patched kernel, if we start to
distribute the various patchs as rpm, we would no longer have 28 compiled kernels in
contrib.

rpmdrake, who is the main consumer of task-* rpm

While it would be useful to group task into sound category, for the moment,

More ever, it doesn't make much sense to have task-lamp-* task-nagios and task-kde4

&gt;<i> So maybe a wizard is a better solution than using a rpm
</I>&gt;<i> that does magically everything.
</I>

Just to get things clear a bit, I'd like to summarize the status of that on which we remained in very good agreement at mandriva:

1) The linux audio (-creating) community is not huge, yet very active and willing to participate, they exploit a bunch of unique applications and server structure who make that linux is nonetheless a well known and growing audio production system.
2) Jack users rely on a couple of very small adaptations in order to have a low-latency system suitable for a good jack performance.
3) There are many solutions of dedicated distributions for audio/video creation, and all have their goods and bads.
4) Mageia will remain a general purpose distro departing from a general purpose distro that had everything to turn it quickly into a VERY well performing audio creation system, not more and not less at the moment.

So this has IMO the following consequences:

* We should not make spin-offs since we would lose the benefit of a high-level maintenance and up-to-date-ness of general packages and the distro itself. There are many examples of dedicated AV-distros that do audio OK but all the rest is in a varying shape.

* I fully agree with Misc on the need of a finer adjustment than tasks for handling audio/video/creation software. A wizzard or dedicated installer program is surely the best solution since that could also do the 2 or three config changes:
1) PAM limits.conf
2) cpufreq
3) handle pulseaudio interferences (i.e. keep the very much appreciated possibility to switch it off)
4) handle alsa device lists and default device in a human-friendly fashion

* The task-sound-studio is a good basis and it can currently be installed with --no-suggests to get all the hard-to-find stuff installed without flooding the system with unnecessary apps.

* We (packagers) can do best if we provide up-to-date software and also collect points and ideas on how to handle the peculiarities so that they can be best integrated into the future &quot;Magxtools&quot;. Here is a huge and unique chance to produce a distro that works for musicians without compromises on the general quality.

* It is too early now to make decisions, and we do not want to &quot;flood&quot; the mageia-dev list with this, but we need to see how much importance the whole thing has and to measure the scope of it within the distro before creating dedicated team channels/lists.

For the time being I think we are allowed to discuss on #linuxmao or #mageia-dev.

Regards
Frank

Michael, thanks for explaining your POV, this is much more constructive
than your first post.

That said I don't agree that a problem with the GUI package manger should
prevent creating new task rpms, if there is a problem with rpmdrake then
it would be great if whoever perceives that problem works on eliminating
it (personally I don't consider it a problem).

But improving rpmdrake is a separate issue to the project initiated by
Sascha in this thread and should be a show-stopper for this project.

Personally I don't like the idea of wizards rather than task rpms as
wizards aren't as manageable (there is nothing to track them and the
changes they have done on the system, unlike with a rpm).

<PRE>Hello, just few words to mention the obvious :

1. musicians are sub-group
2. RT-kernel need is a sub-sub-group of (electronic and music) needs
3. Jack works well on normal-kernel now, providing 90% of sound-studio
usages (really needs of -RT are rares, irl)

and last thing : kernel-RT is not suffisant. user must configure most things
on system (limits.d, sysctl, acpi, tmpfs or ramfs, fstab, and more to have a
&quot;real pro-audio station like any others o.s&quot;), so providing kernel-rt is
good to seems give &quot;out-of-the-box&quot; possibility, but it lies : user in all
cases must configure what is bad to auto-conf through spec file

So maybe it's a false good idea to provide kernel-rt.
Another stone to wall &quot;dont want to have many kernel in repo&quot;

ps : the real trouble about sound-studio seems to be &quot;how to provide
non-free support&quot; ? (eg : compil most softwares with mp3 support, and vst
support) It is possible to provide this supports but without distribute the
lib of ? example : compil qtractor with mp3 + vst support, but wihtout
provide lib for mp3 and vst : software could but user need to install
himself mp3 and vst ?

end of off-topic
nice night
maybe soon

<PRE>Read the tutorial and I think that this really is the best solution IMHO.
I mean providing a good wizard

1. check system can be included
2. modular installation of package groups or even single packages out of a
group is possible
3. alternation and adding files is possible - like limits.conf, etc. is
possible

actually sounds perfect to me.
