Hi there

Here is a second mail from Mr.Crozet we just received:

In response to my email that day, I inform you that the Supervisory
Board adopted the principle of moving the development of the
distribution to an external entity to Mandriva SA. The legal form,
location and other details have not yet been addressed but should be
within a few weeks.

In this context, I wish to associate, to the extent that you are
interested in a working group. It will be responsible for defining the
structure, function and manner of such entity. I expect a participation
as large as possible of the Mandriva Linux "ecosystem" (I do not like
that label), namely representatives of addition of Mandriva SA, Rosa,
Unity Linux, and some of the emblematic figures of French free software.

Can you tell me quickly if you are interested in participating in this
working group?

Feel free to call me to discuss.
---------------------------------------------

So we have to answer quite quickly and together. What I (personally)
think about this:
- Mageia should not join that work group because we do have defined our
own governance model and what is proposed here would change it
- Mageia is an independant project and must stay as it
- Having a clear position now will show we are ok to have mdv in
ecosystem but it will not change our principles

WDYT ? Mdv official announcement is planned for tomorrow

Cheers

Le Conseil de Surveillance de Mandriva SA a validé ma recommandation ce

Pouvons-nous nous joindre par téléphone ou en personne prochainement

the Supervisory Board of Mandriva SA has approved my recommendation that
day and endorses the choice of Mageia as the basis for our business
server product.

We can reach us by phone or in person soon to resolve this
collaboration? I want to announce this good news as soon as possible
before putting my team at work.

-------------------

This is only about Mandriva server product. So it means Mandriva will be
part of Mageia ecosystem. They may contribute to Mageia in one way or
another, this still has to be fixed. We will call Mr Crozet to go on all
this.

Please keep all this private for now, official communication should be

Hi there

Here is a draft for council people (not using ML but mailing everybody).
Comment? This should be sent tonight so that we have time to work on
this properly

Cheers

--------------------

Hi everyone,

I'm mailing here the mail Romain sent to the board yesterday, following
last discussions with Mandriva CEO, JM Croset.

=================

so, Anne and me got in a conf call with JM Croset a few minutes ago to
get a status.

He announced yesterday (Thursday, May 18)
http://blog.mandriva.com/en/2012/05/17/mandriva-linux-will-return-to-the-community/.
So several discussions are popping up here and there. Mageia's
position has been transferred to some people inside Mandriva, among
which Peroyvind (see
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?p=18041#p18041 - although he
doesn't have the full story it seems).

He will announce early next Monday (22) that Mandriva SA will use Mageia
as a tech platform for its business server line, and contribute back.
Antoine Ginies (Mandriva engineer in chief for the business server) will
get in touch with us to see how we do this technically.

He worries that trolls and discussions may damage Mageia in the coming
days (for both news: Mandriva using Mageia as a tech platform for its
Business Server line; and Mageia not following Mandriva in its
foundation things) because he realizes that... community stuff sometimes
goes out of hand; but he reassured us that, whatever is said, he does
mean good for everyone; so it's important to play it cool and neutral on
our side too.

So, here's a suggested plan:

 * we announce/explicit both news on our side on Monday early morning
(CEST) as well, in a single blog post embedding all Mandriva-related news:
 - on one side, Mageia is not going to join Mandriva foundation
project (and why, cold reasons as we gave him),
 - on the other side, Mandriva is going to use Mageia as tech
platform for its business server line (link) and contribute back.
 - this double news should make it more obvious that things are not
so simple as "Mageia is dumping Mandriva" or "Mandriva is rebasing on
Mageia".

 * this news being published Monday morning, it leaves two full days to
propagate, before we push the Mageia 2 release news (Tuesday evening) -
interest about Mageia will have raised a bit in the previous days, and
this release news will hide partially the previous news.

===================

It's good news for Mageia as it makes Mageia ecosystem grow up. It will
make things clearer for Mageia community now as many things were told
about Mandriva future and community. Mageia keeps its own governance and
organization which are now working quite well.

So the next step is about communicating on these news. As said by Romain
it has to be prepared and be ready very quickly as Mandriva announcement
is planned for sunday evening. Mandriva CEO will send us the draft of
its own announcement so that we can check we all agree on the content.

So now we have to work on the Mageia blog post which will be published
on monday morning:
https://pad.riseup.net/p/mdv-foundation

Beware. What's proposed is slightly different: they're not proposing
to change Mageia, but for Mageia representatives to join their
workgroup for a foundation (and the said foundation afterwise).

So it's more a matter of staying apart from their project with a clear
rationale, than changing Mageia at all:
 - if we were to join their foundation, that probably wouldn't change
at all Mageia governance; only weaken its mission and blur the line,
because merging its participation into a separate, parent entity;
 - if we were not to deal with their plan here, this would print
Mageia difference some more (because we'll need to explain we wouldn't
join them).

And, I must add, I don't think we should join their foundation
project, for the following reasons:
 - Mageia, as a structure, seems much better to us as an independant,
inclusive project (to both people and organizations), than something
that seems likely to be under a corporate umbrella;
 - we invested a lot in building Mageia governance already;
 - we don't have the resources to invest into a new equivalent,
duplicate project, because we focus on something else now;

Besides, I'm not sure their strategy is very strong (unless they have
enough funding fort 2/3 years to see things coming) when they invest
on Mageia by using its technology, and invest in a separate, somewhat
concurrent community project. Focus of time and resources is usually
101. Or I am missing something.

But that doesn't prevent to wish them welcome and good luck.

Here's a copy of the answer sent to JM Croset a few minutes ago.
Translation first, original below.

Dear Jean-Manuel,

thank you very much for this information and this invitation.

Without regret or disdain, after discussion with other board members,
I can tell you that we are not interested in joining this workgroup.

- Mageia would have been the ideal collaboration hub for such an
entity, to join and grow, precisely to play such a role; but it did
not happen, probably because our governance rules don't fit
[Mandriva's] Supervisory Board; so be it. We will not walk another
road, this very governance has been defined as it is for very specific
reasons.

- we spent a lot of time, energy, conversations, to define Mageia on
several levels. And we went on producing stuff, and regularly put
things back to work.

- we don't have much information about trends behind the future
entity, what are the goals of each of the potential participants. Ours
are public and clear since day 1.

- we don't have the means (neither the wish) to disperse further our
(small) means on a new thing to define and build, we think our
priorities are elsewhere at this point.

- this won't prevent each of us to collaborate, since our tools and
technos will be Free Software.

Feel free to share the above reasons, they will be the same if we are
asked why we chose not to participate.

And we wish you good luck, and temper, for this endeavour.

----

Cher Jean-Manuel,

=E8s
pr=E9cises.

ailleurs =E0 ce stade.

Just to be more precise on all this, There are 2 projects from Mandriva:

- server product which will be managed in FRance by Mr Crozet mainly
- desktop community which is mainly needed by russian investors.

While first point is quite clear, second is not. At least it does not
fit our governance.

But for both of course, we will recall Mr Crozet about independance and
governance

In fact, I entirely agree with Anne, Oliver, Nicolas and Romain.
I know, easy...
For me, this "work group" is a trap for us! So we should not join it.
We must keep in mind what Mageia.Org is and why Mageia.Org is! And make
Mandriva understand that our governance model is based on this history
and protects us. We don't need Mandriva, it's Mandriva who need us. They
must digest this fact!

Fully agreed.
- We should not accept any changes in our organizational structure on
behalf of anyone except ourselves!
- We should never give up our independence. The prize to the project
would be too high.

So if Mdv should insist on us changing anything, they can go along
without us.

It looks like something to bring Mageia community back to Mandriva.

I also agree we should not join this :
- it's not clear what this entity will be doing and why it is needed
- the Mageia.org governance model is good, we don't need an other entity
- it's free software so we can already share code with other
 distributions if needed, without joining a new entity
- joining this would confuse people about independance of Mageia

So I think we have nothing to gain by joining, and a lot we can lose.

Yes, however I think we should not insist on the possible
misunderstandings in our communication/discussion, but focus on the
good parts, questions will come afterwise (and that's good too):

 - it's great, for everyone, because Mageia is a strong platform;
Mandriva will benefit from it for their server product; and Mageia
will benefit from it from possible Mandriva contributions;
 - it shows that Mageia has reached quite a milestone;
 - it's not revolutionary (Mageia is expected to be used for
derivative projects), but it's cool to see Mandriva acknowledge what
we did, in some way;
 - of course, this does not impact how the project is governed,
because it's unrelated.

If we keep on insisting at first on the potential misunderstandings,
people will focus on that. And the core news is not about potential
mishaps, but about a company that is using technology from a open
source project for their own products.

Of course, if people raise questions, and only then, it will be a good
time to reassure everyone. It's better to do it in this order, because
it will let us know what are exactly the concerns of people out there,
instead of guessing about these.

Right. The privacy of the info is because the move is on Mandriva's
part, not ours.

If the very news we announce is "we're not Fedora/Redhat", people will
associate this to us anyway (because asking immediately "why not?").

What I mean is that we have to be super clear and short about what the
news will be, from our side; and it must be a single message, so
people can remember it for what it is (and not for what it's not).
 - "Welcome, Mandriva, seriously"
 - "Mandriva joins Mageia for its server product"
 - "Mandriva uses Mageia for its server product" - we don't have a
different name for the project and for the product (that would have
been more clear to say that Mandriva was going to use and customize X
as a platform for their server, while just being a contributor to
project Y, whose governance is left unchanged).
 - "Mageia will stay as it is, no change to governance"
 - "A new Mageia-based/derivative corporate product on its way"

Or, we can be super neutral, like saying: "cool, there's a new company
using our technology for its products".

And yes, we need to prepare the Q/A session after, but I don't think
we should include it in the very release, if the release is short and
clear enough.

We must be especially careful, because there's a second announcement
pending from Mandriva (and which may be announced first actually,
tomorrow - Anne will send another mail about it), that's the
foundation of their own Mandriva Linux community entity (likely a
foundation, or so they say) and we will have to react to it as well
and explain why (and this one will need to have a short as well title,
plus a clear, limited rationale).

And depending on the timing, people may confuse the two announcements
- best for us, I believe, would be that they announce their foundation
first.

Let's not forget the bottom line of all this, that's utterly positive
in my view:
 - Mandriva is going to use Mageia as a technology platform;
 - we're going to have to think, discuss and take a stance in regard
of their foundation project.

The point here is about their server product not desktop one (aka

We did already discuss that in council. Yes, Mandriva will be like any
other company, contributing to Mageia.
But we should have some kind of "official position", when they announce
it. Because I don't think, we should keep it in private, that we already
knew about Mandriva's plans in advance and we should be ready to answer
questions from our community, why we kept it in private.
After all, Mageia is about openness (if that is an English word).

I don't have any objections, to keep it in private until Mdv announces
its plans and I see it as a big plus for us, that they did decide on
using Mageia.
But we must make certain our community and the rest of the open source
world does understand, we will keep our independence.

That's something about our credibility.

Yes, I know, I tried to make it clear in that forums post, that we are
not like Fedora.

So I would propose to prepare a blog post along the lines:
"Mageia is happy to announce a newcommer to our eco system..."
Describing what kind of cooperation there will be and what there won't be.
And we should be prepared to answer questions on our forums, the blog
and external news sites, making it clear that we are not like Fedora to
RedHat.

Yes I think it should be clear that Mageia doesn't do anything special
for Mandriva, which is treated like any other contributor, and is
independant. Maybe we can prepare a blog post to publish after the
announce from Mandriva to remind this and avoid possible misunderstandings ?

And reason for keeping this private is that it was requested by them,
and as Mageia is not taking any decision or doing something special
about this, I think there is no reason to refuse to keep this info
private for now.

it will be too late. When the announce of Mageia was done, I have seen
a lot of people comparing Mandriva/Mageia with RedHat/Fedora, although
the announcement was quite clear that it is not the same.

If we don't explain this clearly and don't insist on it, a lot of people
will immediately think it is the same as RedHat/Fedora, or that Mandriva
and Mageia will merge.

Actually there is already people talking about rumors that Mandriva and

> Hi there
>=20
> Here is a draft for council people (not using ML but mailing everybody). C=
omment? This should be sent tonight so that we have time to work on this pro=
perly
>=20
> Cheers
>=20
> --------------------
>=20
> Hi everyone,
>=20
> I'm mailing here the mail Romain sent to the board yesterday, following la=
st discussions with Mandriva CEO, JM Croset.
>=20
> =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
>=20
> so, Anne and me got in a conf call with JM Croset a few minutes ago to get=
 a status.
>=20
> He announced yesterday (Thursday, May 18) http://blog.mandriva.com/en/2012=
/05/17/mandriva-linux-will-return-to-the-community/. So several discussions a=
re popping up here and there. Mageia's
> position has been transferred to some people inside Mandriva, among which P=
eroyvind (see https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?p=3D18041#p18041 - a=
lthough he doesn't have the full story it seems).
>=20
> He will announce early next Monday (22) that Mandriva SA will use Mageia a=
s a tech platform for its business server line, and contribute back. Antoine=
 Ginies (Mandriva engineer in chief for the business server) will get in tou=
ch with us to see how we do this technically.
>=20
> He worries that trolls and discussions may damage Mageia in the coming day=
s (for both news: Mandriva using Mageia as a tech platform for its Business S=
erver line; and Mageia not following Mandriva in its foundation things) beca=
use he realizes that... community stuff sometimes goes out of hand; but he r=
eassured us that, whatever is said, he does mean good for everyone; so it's i=
mportant to play it cool and neutral on our side too.
>=20
> So, here's a suggested plan:
>=20
> * we announce/explicit both news on our side on Monday early morning (CEST=
) as well, in a single blog post embedding all Mandriva-related news:
> - on one side, Mageia is not going to join Mandriva foundation project (=
and why, cold reasons as we gave him),
> - on the other side, Mandriva is going to use Mageia as tech platform fo=
r its business server line (link) and contribute back.
> - this double news should make it more obvious that things are not so si=
mple as "Mageia is dumping Mandriva" or "Mandriva is rebasing on Mageia".
>=20
> * this news being published Monday morning, it leaves two full days to pro=
pagate, before we push the Mageia 2 release news (Tuesday evening) - interes=
t about Mageia will have raised a bit in the previous days, and this release=
 news will hide partially the previous news.
>=20
> =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D
>=20
> It's good news for Mageia as it makes Mageia ecosystem grow up. It will ma=
ke things clearer for Mageia community now as many things were told about Ma=
ndriva future and community. Mageia keeps its own governance and organizatio=
n which are now working quite well.
>=20
> So the next step is about communicating on these news. As said by Romain i=
t has to be prepared and be ready very quickly as Mandriva announcement is p=
lanned for sunday evening. Mandriva CEO will send us the draft of its own an=
nouncement so that we can check we all agree on the content.
>=20
> So now we have to work on the Mageia blog post which will be published on m=
onday morning:

Well, I still consider the so callen Mandriva foundation a "paper
launch" so I dont see much problem with it...

The "counter-weight" to Mageia not following Mdv foundation plans is

I suggest starting the blog post on piratepad. Then sending a first
draft of the blog post tomorrow (or when we have something ready) to
council members to inform them about it and see what they think of it.

Hi everyone,

so, Anne and me got in a conf call with JM Croset a few minutes ago to
get a status.

He announced yesterday (Thursday, May 18)
http://blog.mandriva.com/en/2012/05/17/mandriva-linux-will-return-to-the-community/
. So several discussions are popping up here and there. Mageia's
position has been transferred to some people inside Mandriva, among
which Peroyvind (see
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?p=18041#p18041 - although
he doesn't have the full story it seems).

He will announce early next Monday (22) that Mandriva SA will use
Mageia as a tech platform for its business server line, and contribute
back. Antoine Ginies (Mandriva engineer in chief for the business
server) will get in touch with us to see how we do this technically.

He worries that trolls and discussions may damage Mageia in the coming
days (for both news: Mandriva using Mageia as a tech platform for its
Business Server line; and Mageia not following Mandriva in its
foundation things) because he realizes that... community stuff
sometimes goes out of hand; but he reassured us that, whatever is
said, he does mean good for everyone; so it's important to play it
cool and neutral on our side too.

So, here's a suggested plan:

 * we announce/explicit both news on our side on Monday early morning
(CEST) as well, in a single blog post embedding all Mandriva-related
news:
 - on one side, Mageia is not going to join Mandriva foundation
project (and why, cold reasons as we gave him),
 - on the other side, Mandriva is going to use Mageia as tech
platform for its business server line (link) and contribute back.
 - this double news should make it more obvious that things are not
so simple as "Mageia is dumping Mandriva" or "Mandriva is rebasing on
Mageia".

 * this news being published Monday morning, it leaves two full days
to propagate, before we push the Mageia 2 release news (Tuesday
evening) - interest about Mageia will have raised a bit in the
previous days, and this release news will hide partially the previous
news.

 * until now, all this has been kept private in board-private: a)
knowledge and decision about the foundation, and b) business server
thing. Note that about a), people may question both the decision and
the fact that it was private, without consulting the Council. We will
mail privately Council members to inform them about both a) and b),
but still. We won't need further arguments than what we explained to
Mandriva, and what the governance says. But still again. In the case
of things getting really ugly in the coming weeks, I'd suggest that we
call for a vote of confidence to make things very clear (from Council,
or from all registered contributors in LDAP).

Sorry to make this quick, but we need to approve/reject/amend on this
before tomorrow Saturday (even better, this evening) so we can discuss
this with Council members in private too before Monday morning.
