If you are using IMAP, by default it will download a message each time
you view it, instead of downloading once and leaving it on your
computer. (The plus is easier access from different computers.)
I don't know how mozilla (thunderbird or seamonkey) deals with IMAP, but
if a message is larger than the message size download limit, that could
be the problem.
With seamonkey the message size limit is set under
account_preferences/disk_space. (free translation from french)
I imagine that thunderbird uses a similar location

With POP3 (which I use), it downloads the beginning of an oversized
message and displays "truncated. If you click on the link displayed, it
will then downloads the entire message, then deletes the partial message
that was first downloaded.
Maybe checking ~/.mozilla/thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.*/Mail/{accountname}/inbox
or similar will give you some clues.

> My only other thought was to create a new profile. I have done
> this with Mozilla. The procedure for Thunderbird should be much
> the same, and will be on the Thunderbird page at mozilla.org. It
> should get rid of any permission problems. Since you may have it
> solved anyway, you probably don't need to take that step.
>
> Going to bed. 1t is 02:35 here.
>
> Doug.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I'm still puzzled as to why the
problem started, but since it has gone away I'll live with that and
hope that at some point the penny drops :-)

I'm inclined to follow Juergen's advice and create a movemail account,
though, just in case.... During well over 10 years of using KMail and
Thunderbird I've never needed to, but it can't harm, and might pick up
some things otherwise missed.

>>>> perhaps a subdirectory of your .mozilla directory.

>>>> I think that TB uses the mbox file format. That means that

>>>>
>>>>
>>> That makes sense, yes. I had assumed that it was talking about

>>> /var/spool/mail/anne.
>>>
>>> I am using IMAP - not Disconnected IMAP - IOW, I don't store mail
>>> locally (though I did previously), so that shouldn't be the
>>> problem. All the same, I'll give it some thought.
>>>
>>> Thanks
>>>
>>> Anne - --
>>>
>> If you are using IMAP, by default it will download a message each
>> time you view it, instead of downloading once and leaving it on
>> your computer. (The plus is easier access from different
>> computers.) I don't know how mozilla (thunderbird or seamonkey)
>> deals with IMAP, but if a message is larger than the message size
>> download limit, that could be the problem. With seamonkey the
>> message size limit is set under account_preferences/disk_space.
>> (free translation from french) I imagine that thunderbird uses a
>> similar location
>>
>> With POP3 (which I use), it downloads the beginning of an oversized
>> message and displays "truncated. If you click on the link
>> displayed, it will then downloads the entire message, then deletes
>> the partial message that was first downloaded. Maybe checking
>> ~/.mozilla/thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.*/Mail/{accountname}/inbox or
>> similar will give you some clues.
>>
>>
> Good suggestion, but the message popup was seen as Thunderbird
> started, not during downloading. Although I think it is "cured" I'd
> really like to know what was happening. Still....
>

Doesn't Thunderbird automatically check messages when you start it ?
(That is the default, isn't it ?)

So if it happened to encounter an oversized message ?
Alternately, the suggestions by others regarding a locally installed
email agent...

Hi everyone,

Let's speak about Mageia and Mageia.Org whole experience. What do you
see we* should do? and how?

By experience, we mean a lot: goals, community, identity, branding,
marketing, communication, design, graphics, artwork, Web, events, the
very distribution UI, tools integration, windows decoration, boot
sequence, shutdown sequence, etc.

Note that this is not the same as the general functional features
request on mageia-dev for Mageia 3.

Don't restrain yourself. Of course, it's better if it's workable, or
if you can lend a hand. Tell it, here:
https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Atelier_feedback

And please do it now. Because starting Tuesday July 3rd, we will
aggressively edit this document to reduce it to something organized,
and to something that we can and want to do. So your ideas will maybe
be taken into account, merged, mixed, or ignored. Either way, we need
your point of view.

Thanks!

* we = Mageia makers, and especially the newly Atelier team (artwork,
marcom and web merge, with extended goals) that will try to act on
this.

That was interesting. The message was delivered to an account called
System, type Unix Movemail, server name localhost. Not sure, but it
looks as though maybe I set that up thinking that I didn't have any
provision for local messages. Now it's beginning to make sense. It
really does look as though it was a permissions problem, in not having
mail as the group. When I said it hadn't helped, maybe I hadn't
restarted after the change.

Sorry if this all sounds confused. Family problems are taking much of
my time just now and I keep dropping the ball. Still, I've learned
some useful stuff.

Thanks again, everybody.

> I use such an account all the time to collect the messages created

Ridiculous as it sounds, it seems that I had already set up such an

Frank's suggestion of testing through Mail. The truth is that I did
this install between hospital visits to my mother, and clearly my
brain was addled, so I did things that I don't remember.

Sorry for all the noise. The up-side is that I've learned things -
always good.

When I came to Mageia I said it felt like coming home. The helpful
discussions on the Mageia lists remind me forcibly of my early Linux
days, in Mandrake 8. The community was so supportive of a learner.
As I've joined mailing lists of other distributions I've really seen
what an example is set here. :-D
