>>>>> Now this does not fix the radeon-firmware issue, as this is only to
>>>>> get installer running on all hw. (I probably will remove radeon-firmware
>>>>> again as it's not needed/used by the installer)
>>>>>
>>>>> For the radeon-firmware (and other nonfree firmware) issue, we still
>>>>> need to fix stage2 installer.
>>>>
>>>> Do you have a reference for this issue?
>>>
>>> Is it https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1471 or something else?
>>>
>>
>> Yes, it's exactly that.
>>
>> the free DVD does not contain anything from nonfree, so radeon fails to
>> load until the firmware gets installed.
>>
>> So we are trying to solve this issue cleanly.
>> One thing I'm working on is a separate firmware iso to burn (or put
>> contents on usb stick) to satisfy this need.
>>
>> The other option for radeon users is to install using livecds.
>
> I want to make sure I understand you correctly, as I'm planning to upgrade a MDV 2010.2 machine with a Radeon HD 4650 to Mageia 1 tomorrow.
>
> The referenced bug makes it sound like the installer works fine, but since it doesn't have access to the nonfree firmware, the initrds it
> generates in the bootloader installation part doesn't contain them, so booting the installed system is problematic if you don't do
> radeon.modeset=0.

This is correct.

The other option on Mageia 1 is to do a online upgrade, and it will pull
the needed firmwares from nonfree during install.

>
> Listening to you in this thread I'm getting worried DrakX itself may not work without access to the firmware. Did I misread you?
>

DrakX/installer will work as it does not rely on hw specific drivers, as
it runs in framebuffer mode.

The point of fixing stage2 is that when installer detects hw that needs
firmware from nonfree, it should notify the user and ask if he/she wants
to install it, either from an additional media or from online repos.

The problem with upcoming radeon hw, is that it wont work with
radeon.modeset=0 as the only supported mode is KMS.

I'm also looking into have the radeon driver refuse to load if it does
not find its firmware, and maybe instead load vesa. But no ETA on that part.
