&gt;<i> Le jeudi 23 septembre 2010 &#224; 16:17 -0400, Marc Par&#233; a &#233;crit :
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> I think in the grand scheme of things, we should all acknowledge that
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> should the name &quot;Mageia&quot; not work, that a name change would be a
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> possibility, just as a logo change is still a possibility. We have seen
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> this from many OSS firms who went through this process.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> How do you assess that it is the name that do not work and that's not
</I>&gt;<i> anything else ?
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> We should be careful in making the distro too &quot;cottagey&quot; or &quot;home grown&quot;
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> in looks and flavour. I would suggest that the long term vision for the
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> distro also include a commercial aspect. There should be a community
</I>&gt;&gt;<i> driven distro and a commercial distro (read server).
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I fear that this scheme does look like too much the one that caused
</I>&gt;<i> problem in the past within Mandriva community, with contradictions
</I>&gt;<i> between the community nature and the more commercial version.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> How would you ensure that the community version will not be seen as a
</I>&gt;<i> cheap version of the commercial one ? How would you prevent this idea
</I>&gt;<i> from destroying again the community like it did by the past ?
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> If theses questions are not solved, I think all attempts to redo the
</I>&gt;<i> mistakes of the past are bound to recreate the failures of the past.
</I>&gt;<i> And I think that none of us think that's a desirable outcome.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> All people who I asked the question said that the only solution is to
</I>&gt;<i> have 2 different names and brandings.
</I>&gt;<i> Redhat do it, and it work fine from them.
</I>&gt;<i> Novell do it, and it work fine.
</I>&gt;<i> Canonical do it ( to a lesser extend , since there was
</I>&gt;<i> <A HREF="https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-servers/+bug/375345">https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntuone-servers/+bug/375345</A> ), and it work
</I>&gt;<i> fine.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> Even debian based distro used a different name ( progeny, etc ).
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> We didn't for Mandriva, and so started the confusion between the
</I>&gt;<i> company, the distribution and the community. And so people didn't
</I>&gt;<i> contribute because it was a business, and the idea that &quot;updates were
</I>&gt;<i> not free&quot; stick around for a long time because it was hard to explain to
</I>&gt;<i> people the different concept
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So if there is a business or commercial version, I think this would
</I>&gt;<i> requires a different name and branding. Using the association name for
</I>&gt;<i> that would not be right, in my opinion.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>
Good points.

However, we are lucky in that are just at the start of organizing the
community and it gives us the luxury of trying to plan a rational growth
path for the distro.

Mageia is starting off from the community end of things. We should then
be looking at models where communities have grown from that end then. A
good example that I can think of is the Moodle application where it
started out as a community driven project and its commercial end is now
doing quite well. The planning for the commercial end came a little
after the Moodle community became popular and the commercial end
followed. Their logo and name are quite known now in educational
circles, both on the community OSS side and the corporate side. This
assures the community a little more financial independence with support
coming from the corporate side.

It may be to our benefit to see if some similar growth models could be
applied to Mageia.

I 100% agree with Michael, Mageia the foundation and the distro should
NOT have any commercial involvement, that's not how it was intended as
far as I understand the objectives on the mageia.or home page and that's
definitely not what i want to be involved in.

Of course anyone (including community members) is free to create a
separate for profit distro under a different name that is based on
Mageia, but the name Magei should NEVER be associated with a commercial
distro.

Debian should be our only example to follow in this respect.

My main reason to applaud the decision to start Mageia and also my
main motivation to join this project is the fact that it is community
driven and community led. That it is not subject to commercial
strategies and/or necessities or even pressure and restraints. I am
not interested to face this situation again that some manager tells me

If somebody thinks about commercial options I will only agree if these
options are under control of the community board, not the other way
round, and if this commercial part has a different name and brand.

I've been suffering from this mixture of commercial and half-free and
free Mandriva Linux for years, having to correct misunderstandings,
unclear descriptions and articles which still today make users at
events ask me, &quot;why Mandriva takes money for their distribution while
Ubuntu is cost free?&quot;.

I don't want that to be repeated with Mageia.

Maybe you don't realise it, but the momentum would be quickly lost if
you start to pollute the original objectives with commercial aims, a
large part of the enthusiasm is BECAUSE Mageia is non-profit.

I would not contribute to Mageia (neither money nor time) if it becomes
for-profit and I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one.

I really hope that the foundation charta makes this very clear (the
non-profit scope) else it would cause a lot of momentum to evaporate.

Again, Debian or the Linux kernel project are IMHO the examples to
follow, nothing else.

We postponed the mls creation until we have a clear delimitation and
understanding about the various sub groups who will need one, and until
we can find what we can offer to those subgroups to collaborate ( ie,
wiki, elgg, or any kind of tools, depending on the need, what is
available and so on ).

Marketing and communication somehow overlap if we look at the
description on <A HREF="http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=marketing">http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=marketing</A> and
<A HREF="http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=communication,">http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=communication,</A>
communication and webteam may overlap ( as the web site is
communication ), so could webteam and design, or design and
communication.
And webteam and sysadmin may also overlap too or at least, will require
to discuss.

So we thought that too much mls in the first place would be ineffective,
as this would get too messy too soon.

I can understand the need to have a list as it somehow act the creation
of the team, but I think we can do better than a ml to do that, except
that we do not have the definite infrastructure for this ( but we are
working hard on it ).

&gt;<i> I'll set up a pirate pad in any case.

I have been pondering on installing gobby on the server, because it is
packaged, and wait on <A HREF="https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Etherpad_FAD">https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Etherpad_FAD</A> to
adapt the package for our current host ( running Mandriva ), since
etherpad is rumored to be quite complex to setup properly.

It would be even a benefit for the distro: one suit to fit all markets.
You have a distro that works for everything.
Just:
- have a one and only DVD distro
- have several automatic setups for desktop and server (if you want to
distinguish them, that I would not, I want to log in in Gnome in my
samba server to admin it and I want firefox to google ldap problems)
 like mandriva does with KDE/Gnome/other.
- make very clear that you/someone sells a commercial support product,
not DVD or distro product, even say &quot;I can mail you also the dvd,
but you could just donwload it, it is the same and what you pay for
is SUPPORT from the people that builds and better knows it&quot;.
- dont use any different branding or logo, just find a logo that is
serious enough to fit the commercial part.

And I have not finished reading all the threads, but having a look at
the logos, I see some clear problem: many are too complicated.
After choosing a logo for our research group at the University,
time after I realized we did it wrong, for some aspects:

- separate the logo from the name. A logo is a logo, and the full
distro/whatever includes the logo and the distro name.
So you are free to chose both the icon/logo and the typeface for
the name, you can put only the logo in some places, you can
arrange the logo+name in different setups (one above other for
the top of a letter or side by side for a web title or banner)
This rules out all that designs with interlaced letters and
plants or fire and so on
- dont relay too much on colour. Suppose you want to put your logo
on a black and white letter...a logo that can be printed both
in colour and black would be perfect (as I wrote this, I found
the artwork guidelines, so forget it ;) ).

I really like this idea:

<A HREF="http://www.flickr.com/photos/54167983@N08/5011126293/in/pool-1491252@N24/">http://www.flickr.com/photos/54167983@N08/5011126293/in/pool-1491252@N24/</A>

You can print it in black and white, have a photo-realistic render,
or even a use video in this line

<A HREF="http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-video-10598162-blue-energy-ball.php">http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-video-10598162-blue-energy-ball.php</A>

with the M turning into blue fire ;)

Just some ideas, no pun intended.

Great work, guys!! Lookin forward the day I could switch my mirror list
in urpmi...

</I>
Yes. From a purely technical point of view, that's the only change. In a
closed source world, you could add artificial restrictions ( as
Microsoft did for Windows or for old Windows NT server edition, who
cannot handle much memory, or not too much processor, etc ).

&gt;<i> And what is the difference between the Commercial and the Free edition ?
</I>&gt;<i> The support from the company ?
</I>
Yes again.
Even if the Free edition could be supported as well by contract if
needed. But for cost reason, someone who offer support will prefer to do
it on a small subset of know packages in order to avoid surprise. But
there is company that offer support on almost all kind of system.

Usually, it is just a matter of paying enough. I used to have a job of
supporting debian as sysadmin, on any type of packages, for a client, so
that's not uncommon.

Hi Marc,

I think you're mixing up 'marketing' and 'commercial'. The consumers are
not necessarily clients.

I think that Graham's point is that finding a name or a logo have to be
consequences of the project's philosophy, and not random accidents (as
in many FOSS or even commercial projects).

To answer Graham, it seems Mageia's founders thought about that when
they started the fork : the notion of magic (or rather automagically) is
at the heart of the Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia vision.
The notions are (I'm quoting from <A HREF="http://mageia.org/">http://mageia.org/</A>):
- simplicity (targeting new (or lazy) Linux users)
- magical configuration tools (wizards)
- integration
- innovation
- community

Maybe we can start from there.

</I>&gt;<i> And webteam and sysadmin may also overlap too or at least, will require
</I>&gt;<i> to discuss.
</I>
My first reaction was &quot;NOOOO, I want my exclusive MARKETING LIST!!&quot;
(note caps and 2, yes two, exclamation marks. So restrained ;) )

But then my consideration is that you are right. We (people) tend to package
things in terms of job descriptions. This is a hangover from our offline work
environment.

Marketing, website, education, documentation, graphic design: all are
communication, so lets put them under a single mail list. The more I think
about it the more i like the synergies that would come out of that.

&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> So we thought that too much mls in the first place would be ineffective,
</I>&gt;<i> as this would get too messy too soon.
</I>
The only problem I have is that important stuff can get buried in noise. For
instance if a group of us were working on a mission statement, the thread
would not be busy and would disappear off the bottom in really short order.
The ideal solution of course would be a Email Subject/title convention, but
noone ever sticks to those in an open source project, it's hard enough to get
them to stop top posting! :D However a single Comms list would mitigate that
to a degree

&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I can understand the need to have a list as it somehow act the creation
</I>&gt;<i> of the team, but I think we can do better than a ml to do that, except
</I>&gt;<i> that we do not have the definite infrastructure for this ( but we are
</I>&gt;<i> working hard on it ).
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> &gt; I'll set up a pirate pad in any case.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> I have been pondering on installing gobby on the server, because it is
</I>&gt;<i> packaged, and wait on <A HREF="https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Etherpad_FAD">https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Etherpad_FAD</A> to
</I>&gt;<i> adapt the package for our current host ( running Mandriva ), since
</I>&gt;<i> etherpad is rumored to be quite complex to setup properly.
</I>
OK, they're horrible bloody things in many ways from a usage pov,

&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> In the mean time, yes, a piratepad would be a solution.
</I>
I would prefer collaboration on google docs but pirate pads realtime update
is a killer feature at this point and so I'll put up with the other
irritations.

I will have breakfast and get into it

<PRE>Some things that I noticed with Mandriva what shoud be fixed in Mageia. If you know others, add to list. Let's make a pre-buglist ;)

1. Since Mandriva 2010.0, there is a strange problem with BR-ABNT layout keyboards: when you press the , key at numpad, system prints a . instead. I've report this bug at Mandriva's Bugzilla but don't know if it was fully fixed. Other current distros are afected too. Ubuntu is one what is not.

2. For an unknow reason, when installing Mandriva on Virtualbox, installer takes a long time to install GRUB boot manager. On a real machine, this doesn' occurs. Please investigate.

3. When updating a kernel, all installed kernels are listed on GRUB screen. This is right, but can confuse some users. We should show only the last installed kernel and a menu item that leads to other menu with all other installed kernels.

Reguards.

&gt;<i> Some things that I noticed with Mandriva what shoud be fixed in Mageia. If you know others, add to list. Let's make a pre-buglist ;)
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> 1.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> 2. For an unknow reason, when installing Mandriva on Virtualbox, installer takes a long time to install GRUB boot manager. On a real machine, this doesn' occurs. Please investigate.
</I>&gt;<i>
</I>&gt;<i> 3. When updating a kernel, all installed kernels are listed on GRUB screen. This is right, but can confuse some users. We should show only the last installed kernel and a menu item that leads to other menu with all other installed kernels.
</I>
Hi,

I think you should fill bug reports on qa.mandriva.com.
Or fill bug reports when 1) we will have a distro and 2) a bug tracker
for it.

Posting here is not gonna work, as this will be forgot in the flood of
email coming each day.
