+It's all the build options Marja. Source based distros allow you to
+configure build flags however you like so you can enable certain things
+or disable others you don't use. The packages are then built when they
+are installed rather than being pre-built on the repository with some
+default build options.

+Some people prefer the level of granular control it gives them. It's a
+trade-off though. Some say it makes their system faster or it uses less
+memory etc but it can also be a bit of a faff to configure.

+I wasn't aware freebsd was like that though. Horses for courses.
