(QA Team and Triage team in CC, but please answer only to
mageia-dev at mageia.org)

I was asked to define a process for backports validation, so here is a
proposal. We can discuss it a few days and then I'll add the result to the
backports policy page.

Process for backports :

Triage:
- identify backport requests
- add "Backport Request: " in the bug report summary
- add the "backport" keyword
- assign to maintainer

The maintainer can refuse to do the backport :
- doesn't want to maintain it => assign the bug report back to
bugsquad at mageia.org so that another packager can step in
- has a good reason for not providing this backport (policy, possible
breakage...) => close as wontfix

Packager:
- create bug report if not done already
- submit to {core,nonfree,tainted}/backports_testing
- find a tester : original bug reporter when there is one, yourself if there's
none, or ask in forums/irc/MLs...
- once tested by at least one person (it must be said explicitly in the bug
report), hand it to QA :
 - make sure the bug report summary starts with "Backport Request: " or
"Backport Candidate: "
 - add the "backport" keyword if missing
 - assign to qa-bugs at ml.mageia.org
 - list the source RPMs if there are several
- be ready to fix bugs and answer QA team questions

QA:
- test backports the same way that we test updates. But don't forget that
updates have a higher priority than that of backports.
- move the packages from backports_testing to backports

Packager again:
- be ready to fix bugs : once you pushed a backport, you have to maintain it
until the distribution's end of life :)

Does this seem a good process, from the packager, QA and triage point of view?

Best regards

Samuel Verschelde

> Triage:
> - identify backport requests
> - add "Backport Request: " in the bug report summary
> - add the "backport" keyword
> - assign to maintainer
>
> The maintainer can refuse to do the backport :
> - doesn't want to maintain it => assign the bug report back to
> bugsquad at mageia.org so that another packager can step in
> - has a good reason for not providing this backport (policy, possible
> breakage...) => close as wontfix
>
> Packager:
> - create bug report if not done already
> - submit to {core,nonfree,tainted}/backports_testing
> - find a tester : original bug reporter when there is one, yourself if
> there's none, or ask in forums/irc/MLs...
>
>
> - be ready to fix bugs : once you pushed a backport, you have to maintain
> it until the distribution's end of life :)
>
> Does this seem a good process, from the packager, QA and triage point of
> view?
>

In order to differentiate update candidates awaiting testing and those awaiting
packager action, we will now assign the bug reports to the packagers when we
are waiting for their input.

When doing this, we need to add qa-bugs in CC to the bug report to make sure
we will still get notifications about it, and that above all it still shows in
the saved search :
https://bugs.mageia.org/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=dorem&remaction=run&namedcmd=waiting%20for%20QA%20test&sharer_id=22

This way the state of an update candidate can be identified from the
information in the bug report:
- assigned to qa-bugs and has the validated keyword => ready to push
- assigned to qa-bugs without the validated keyword => update candidate that
needs testing
- not assigned to qa-bugs but has qa-bugs in CC => update candidate awaiting
packager input

In the above saved search, sorting by Assignee will allow to separate updates
needing testing and updates awaiting packager input. Maybe in the future we
can split it in 2 different saved searches if we find it useful.

I see 2 options :
- either systematically assign to the packager when a tester encounters a
difficulty or needs more information
- or only when we have been waiting for more than 2 days

The first option could be more heavy but the second requires people from QA
and/or triage to regularly update the bug reports. As we already do it, I
would choose option 2.

Which option do you prefer ?

Once we have decided I will try to remember to send this piece of information
to the mageia-dev mailing and to update the wiki. If I forget, please remind
it to me :)

>> that if someone writes a "how to install Mageia", this howto can, if
>> necessary, be improved so that these "bugs" will be solved.
>>
>> http://www.mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=documentation looks rather
>> dead :
>>
>> How to contact/join the team
>> mailing-list TODO
>> IRC channel TODO
>> meetings TODO
>> team contact, leader, deputy leader, representative TODO
>> Therefore I tried some different ways first, but those didn't work
>> out. Last time I tried was yesterday evening: I sent Ennael (she's on
>> the documentation team list) a PM. She'll probably get an avalange of
>> mails and messages. I don't know if and when she'll reply.
>>
>> Oh, on the white board I put HOWTO_INSTALL_MAGEIA (that's so long I'm
>> bound to misspell sooner or later, H_I_M would have been better)
>>
>> That's it. Suggestions are welcome.
>>
>> Have a nice weekend,
>> Marja
> Hi, feel free to post these mail on bugsquad.
>
> I will ask on the concil meeting if there is some news about this
> documentation team.
> For bug 1042 and 926 I don't know what to said, but for 727, maybe we
> can find a way to have a better step for the grub install.
>
> (We have notes http://mageia.org/1/notes/ or errata
> http://www.mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=mageia1:errata (and Errata on the
> whiteboard for bugzilla, make by aahmad)
>
>
Thanks. I tried to find a developer to look at 727.

(I mailed this to two of them, on september 7th. At that time, I wasn't aware that grub install might be related to a different package than drakx-installer-stage2):

Hi Pascal and/or bom dia Dorileo,

I'm learning to be a bug squad member, and I don't know which one of you
to address.

Dorileo is the only one who maintains installer, according to this list:

http://www.mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=packaging#list_of_registered_people

And according to Sophie, there isn't a drakx-installer-stage2
maintainer, but I know Pascal accepted installer issues before. Did you
maintain drakx-installer-stage2 in Mandriva, Pascal?

Anyway could you please look at
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=727? If it still hasn't been
assigned to anyone else, could one of you take it?

Thanks / obrigada

Regards,

Marja

But since they didn't have time to reply fast (and I didn't manage to patiently wait), I figured it would be easier to address this problem in, e.g., an install.txt.

Anyway, I'll have a look at the links you gave, Manuel, though the above one (http://mageia.org/1/notes/) is very unreadable to me, it's kind of empty ;)

> > > In order to differentiate update candidates awaiting testing and those
> > > awaiting packager action, we will now assign the bug reports to the
> > > packagers when we are waiting for their input.
> > >
> > > When doing this, we need to add qa-bugs in CC to the bug report to make
> > > sure we will still get notifications about it, and that above all it
> > > still shows in the saved search :
> > > https://bugs.mageia.org/buglist.cgi?cmdtype=dorem&remaction=run&namedcmd=
> > > waiting%20for%20QA%20test&sharer_id=22
> > >
> > > This way the state of an update candidate can be identified from the
> > > information in the bug report:
> > > - assigned to qa-bugs and has the validated keyword => ready to push
> > > - assigned to qa-bugs without the validated keyword => update candidate
> > > that needs testing
> > > - not assigned to qa-bugs but has qa-bugs in CC => update candidate
> > > awaiting packager input
> > >
> > > In the above saved search, sorting by Assignee will allow to separate
> > > updates needing testing and updates awaiting packager input. Maybe in
> > > the future we can split it in 2 different saved searches if we find it
> > > useful.
> > >
> > > I see 2 options :
> > > - either systematically assign to the packager when a tester encounters a
> > > difficulty or needs more information
> > > - or only when we have been waiting for more than 2 days
> > >
> > > The first option could be more heavy but the second requires people from
> > > QA and/or triage to regularly update the bug reports. As we already do
> > > it, I would choose option 2.
> > >
> > > Which option do you prefer ?
> >
> > option 2 for me
> >
> > > Once we have decided I will try to remember to send this piece of
> > > information to the mageia-dev mailing and to update the wiki. If I
> > > forget, please remind it to me :)
> >
> > mageia-discuss is not mageia-dev :p
> >
>
> I really meant mageia-dev, to pass the information to packagers, so that they
> know that they must assign the bug back to qa-bugs after they did their work
> :)

Hi everyone,

My name is Marja van Waes (marja), I joined the Bug Squad recently and
am currently helping with the migration of our old documents to the new
wiki.

One of those documents is the list of registered Bug Squad Members.

http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=triage#list_of_registered_people

Are you a member of the team but not on that list? (I'd love to see you
name on it)
Do you know of someone else who should be on the list?
Are you on the list but temporarily unavailable? (no, we won't kick you
out, but it is good to know)
Did you volunteer for our team but somehow never manage to start
triaging? (no, I am not going to strike through your name, I'd only like
to know so we can think about how to get you started :-) )

Yes, and even if you're still on the list, but left the team because of
other priorities, please tell us. We'll skip your name reluctantly.

Another question, if there are certain types of bugs that you prefer
(e.g. if you know a lot about gaming, you might take a special interest
in related bugs), could you please tell. If everyone agrees I would like
to replace the old comments by those preferences.

For your convenience, the list as it was when I last looked at it (this
morning) is printed below.

Marja

(Thanks Manuel, for improving what I wrote and thanks Dan for asking for examples.

I'll try to expand and improve this document - maybe even with screenshots - for use in the new wiki.)

Any suggestions (from anybody!) are welcome.

But please don't look at the current triage guide now.
I don't want you to concentrate on that guide, but I would like you to concentrate on what you know or learned by experience.
Later on the triage guide can be compared with this document and they can be fused into a guide that contains the best of both :-)

BUGS:

Not all steps ar easy, you can start doing what is easy for you and leave the rest to others.
No bugs should be assigned to a maintainer before all necessary steps are taken (unless, of course, the maintainer chooses to grab the bug)

Step 1

>> Look at the
>> new bugs that are reported and use bugzilla to find out whether one is
>> a_duplicate_ of an existing bug. If you are not used to searching
>> bugzilla: play around with it first. And don't forget to try the
>> advanced options https://bugs.mageia.org/query.cgi (choose right tab:
>> advanced search)
Step 2a

Dit the reporter give the needed basic information about the Mageia release he uses and what steps to take to reproduce the bug?

ADD:(examples of reports with and without needed info)

step 2b (often not so easy, if you don't know how to do it: leave it to others and watch what they do)

Check wether the reporter gave needed backtraces, if he didn't: ask for them and tell him how to get them if he doesn't know

ADD: (examples)

Step 3

>> If someone has the same version of Mandriva as you and reports a bug
>> in a program you are familiar with, you can try to_reproduce_ the bug.
>>
>>
But often other Mageia users report that they have the same bug, so then they reproduced it.

If it can't be reproduced, than it isn't a bug and the bug should be closed
(but please tell the user he can find help for his problem on https://forums.mageia.org/en/)

Step 4

> You can also_add a maintainer_ like what I do here:
>
> https://bugs.mageia.org/show_activity.cgi?id=2856
>
> check the src.rpm:
> :src claws-mail with sophie (on irc or sophie.zarb.org)
> or urpmq --sourcerpm claws-mail
>
> then search the maintainer:
> :maint claws-mail
> or search on the txt list: http://pkgsubmit.mageia.org/data/maintdb.txt
>
> then search the email of the maintainer: julien on the page
> http://www.mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=packaging#list_of_registered_people
>
> or just type the id, sometime it's work (like for misc, tmb,...),
> sometimes not (like here, there is two id) :)
OLD BUGS:

> We must check that for all 'old' bug.
> Here is a saved-search for all bug assigned to bugsquad:

Hi everyone,

Andre999 gave me some good tips on how to make our Triage Guide easier
to read, without changing the content:

****************************************************************************

After "OK, it is a duplicate, what should be done?"
(One could say "OK, it is a duplicate, what next?")
----
"Since the bug is a duplicate of a previous report, you should set the
status of the bug to
<code>RESOLVED DUPLICATE</code>
with the appropriate bug number.
This will usually be the only action required.
If the fact that the bug is a duplicate ..."
----

- Any text that is to entered by the user should be between
<code>...</code>.
This will make it appear on a separate line, and always monospaced (so
as to be very readable), even if the other text is proportional.
(This is also used for computer code, hence the name.)

- Frequently starting a new sentence on a new line makes it easier to
follow a somewhat complex line of thought.
- Using bullets a little more consistently should help as well.
- Point form is much clearer than amorphous paragraphs.

But as I said above, the content seems very well thought out, it is only
the presentation that could use a little enhancement.

Don't forget: documenting is more an art than a science, so don't be
afraid to use a little imagination in your presentation. And practice a
lot.

BTW, in programming we learn what is called "prettyprint" in English.
Basically the above principles, for internal documentation of program code.
(Judging by external documentation, you can see that some programmers
learn a little better than others.:) )

************************************************************************************************************

The code tags don't need to be converted, in the new wiki they are the
same as in the old one. If no one opposes, I'd like to start replacing
the "strong" tags for words like "RESOLVED INVALID" "NEEDINFO" etc. with
code tags.

Regards,
Marja
