After downloading the NVidia binary drivers,

I usually do a:

urpme nvidia -a

Making sure that the dkms and x11-driver is removed along with it and then run the nvidia installer, let it do the compile and reboot.

To do this, you must have the kernel headers installed or have compiled your own kernel.
