But, the first question is, how do people know what services are managed by mageia.org sysadmins (regardless of how they are authenticated).

IMHO, services supported by mageia.org sysadmins should be on a mageia.org hostname, services that are not, should *not* be, or should otherwise be separately identified. So, if the forum is not going to be managed by mageia.org sysadmins, and we can't give assurances that a privacy policy is adhered to, etc. etc., then IMHO, it should not be hosted on forums.mageia.org, but maybe forums.mageia-community.org or similar.

> OpenID/OAuth are precisely designed to avoid this.

Well, are designed to avoid users entering credentials into multiple sites/services. But, the confidentiality of the data that the user subsequently provides to the service is not addressed (although to some extent, data that the 2nd party - the authorizing service - provides to the 3rd is).

My plan was to use something like https://identity.mageia.org/openid as an OpenID provider, using some of the existing Perl modules that provide some OpenID support (e.g. http://search.cpan.org/~lyokato/OpenID-Lite-0.01_04/lib/OpenID/Lite/Provider.pm), but unfortunately I have 1)been a bit busy with a new baby in the house, 2)very limited bandwidth at home, 3)new responsibilities at work.

If someone else has some more experience with OpenID and/or OAuth, and can give some pointers, that may help.

> So the question, to sum it up is this: would the sysadmin team be ok

Sure.

> - possibly setup and implemented/provided by non sysadmins

Tested/written by non sysadmins, sure, setup, no, as the software will need some more privileged access to LDAP that most user accounts.

> It's not about setting a fight between systems integrity/admin and
> foolish experiments/developments - it's about allowing ideas to bubble

Well, even though some pieces took a while to get into place, I think we have managed to provide an adequate experience to users, and been able to encourage a lot of contributors to have accounts which can be used for a number of services. But, until now, most services have had LDAP support, and many of them needed to run on our infrastructure.

This by no means means that this is all we should or are willing to support, but there is a bit more work left to provide more modular authentication.

Regards,
Buchan

Hello,

Mageia servers are currently running Mandriva 2010.1, and sometimes we
need to rebuild some packages to use them on the servers.

To do this :
 - copy your src.rpm to root at jonund.mageia.org:~iurt/2010.1-SRPMS
 - run iurt2010.1 as iurt user on jonund to rebuild the package :
   # su - iurt
   $ cd 2010.1-SRPMS
   $ iurt2010.1 package.src.rpm
 - run sync2010.1 on valstar as schedbot user :
   # su - schedbot
   $ sync2010.1
 - The package should now be available in /distrib/mandriva/2010.1-mgaserv/x86_64/
and can be installed on the servers with urpmi.

While discussing on #mageia-dev with olorin, I started to write a script
to import ssh keys from the fs to the ldap, and then finished, and then
I ran it ( while I was on it ).

So all keys from the filesystem have been copied to ldap. ( if I didn't
done something wrong... )

Here is the script, in case we need it again.

Indeed. And after running the script to export, it worked well.

So we can now, after successfully testing a a poor rabbit in the

Subject: kde-l10n-en_US package changes
To: Maegia development mailing-list <mageia-dev at mageia.org>

Hi,

Previously the kde-l10n-en_US package was produced from the kdelibs4
scr.rpm, this is an almost virtual package as it only contained one
single file. The main purpose behind that split was so as not to force
users who use the en_US system locale to install kde-l10n-en_GB
package to satisfy the 'kde-l10n' requires in lib*kdecore5.

This had a few problems, as:
1) kde-l10n-en_US had an Epoch, inherited from the the kdelibs4 spec,
from where it comes from
2) it had a different release than the rest of the kde-l10n packages
(that're produced by kde-l10n src.rpm).

This has been changed and now kdelibs4 won't produce kde-l10n-en_US,
instead that virtual package will come from the kde-l10n src.rpm, this
should make it easier for users to select which kde-l10-* they want
when installing task-kde4; previously kde-l10n-en_US was installed no
matter what due to a wrong requires in lib*kdecore5, however even
after fixing that bit, urpmi selected it without asking (either due to
1) or 2) above, or to some other reason that I don't know :)).

Since the old kde-l10n-en_US-4.6.2-7.mga1 had an Epoch, you'll need to
remove it manually:
# rpm -e --nodeps kde-l10n-en_US

This issue only existed in Cooker and now in Cauldron, both are
development releases, so no automatic obsoletes will be added (as this
would interfere with the new package from kde-l10n src.rpm which
doesn't have an Epoch)

@sysadm team: please remove kde-l10n-en_US-4.6.2-7.mga1 from the
master mirror manually, so that the new kde-l10n can be submitted.

Hello,

As we have a proposal for a new Tier1 mirror, we need to decide how many
tier1 mirrors we want. And maybe rules for minimal bw available on those

 - asia

 - africa

What could we do then to have the current US mirror (ibiblio) sync
more often? Once a day is a bit low a frequency if we want to delegate

Either way, mirrors policy about Tier1/Tier2 needs to be explicited somehow.

Having better ones would be nice...
We currently have 3 tier1 mirrors, 2 of them have only 100Mbit and the
third one only syncs once a day so is useless.

In asia, people in asia who want to provide a mirror have to sync from
the chinese one which only have 100Mbit and is not primary

In south america syncing from Europe is awful, and there is no up to
date mirror in US, so I doubt we get much mirrors in America if we

Hi,

as french peoples already know, tomorow is the first day
of Solution Linux, a big french event lasting 3 days (
http://www.solutionslinux.fr/ ). As I have proposed myself
as a volunteer for the Mageia booth, and as a conferencer
( on Mageia, 10/05 at 9h if you wish to see ), I will likely
not be present either on irc and on mail so expect some
delays. I will also not be present for meetings in the evening,
as SL is traditionally one of the few moments of the year where you can
go out together with friends coming from all over the country in
the evening.

By they way, if you are on Paris, do not forget there is a dinner
planned tomorow : http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=events:solutions_linux_2011

Or just come to say hi on our booth :)

ibiblio provides only basic service, it's not adequate for a tier1,
where commitment is necessary.

When mageia.c3sl.ufpr.br is registered we can take care of the whole
South America. Since we have a 5Gb/s connection to Miami, I think we
can also serve North America adequately, even if it's not optimal.

I think a tier1 mirror should indeed meet some requirements:
- minimum bandwidth
- mirror all of the repository, to allow other mirrors update from
  them
- update frequency

It's not only bandwidth on the master that limits the number of
mirrors, it's also the very expensive disk scans caused by rsync. It's
sometimes a bigger problem than bandwidth.

BTW, you say that 700GB are necessary, however the repository is only
73GB now. Unless Jussieu is not complete.

About the update frequency, you might want to provide triggering for
the tier1s. It makes updates much more efficient. Some distros use it
and for Debian it's a requirement for a tier1.

Good idea.

For tier1 :
- minimum BW: 1Gb/s ?
- update frequency: 15mn ?

Maybe we can also have requirement for non-tier1 :
- minimum BW: 10Mb/s ?
- update frequency: 5 hours ?

The repository is currently 63GB, but we only have cauldron for now. At
release 1 and for each new release the repository will be forked.
Updates and backports repositories will be added. Maybe new
architectures like ARM will be added on the mirrors. So size will
increase with time, and can reach something like 700GB after a few
years and releases. Maybe README file should be updated to explain this.

Fine.

 >- update frequency: 15mn ?

That's very frequent. I think it's not necessary, and it'll produce a
high load on the master due to the disk scans. For short update
periods the amount of changes/download is small and the disk scans are
the biggest load. For now it won't be a problem because the repository
is still small but later it'll be a bottleneck. Note that it also
causes a load on the mirrors because there's a disk scan there too. I
suggest 2h.

That said, we have no problem with whatever frequency you choose.

Thanks. I cannot confirm yet because there's a problem with reverse v6
dns in our upstream provider so you cannot resolve us... It may take
some time to fix this because it doesn't depend on us; meanwhile we'll
use IPv4.

[Mageia-sysadm] things to do for release

Hello,

You can see on this page the list of things to do for the release :
http://www.mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=iso1:countdown

From this list, I think the following will be done by sysadmin team :

- sign ISOs
- fork cauldron tree directory on mirror to official tree
- clean testing repositories for stable tree
- make a copy in svn of the current svn tree ( svn cp ) to a branch
- clean history on binrepos svn
- add config for new release in youri
- unfreeze cauldron
- manage torrents files
- upload trees and isos on primary mirror on private directory

So I think we can prepare some scripts to do the following :
 - fork cauldron tree on mirrors to official tree and clean testing
   repositories
 - create branch for each package (as discussed at last packagers meeting) :
   svn+ssh://svn.mageia.org/svn/packages/cauldron/[packagename]/pristine/
     copied to
   svn+ssh://svn.mageia.org/svn/packages/cauldron/[packagename]/branches/1/
 - clean history on binrepos svn
 - sign ISOs

I plan to start those scripts this week (but you can help too). In this
directory :
 svn+ssh://svn.mageia.org/svn/soft/release/trunk/

And I think the following can also be useful if we have time :
 - see how we can have statistics about number of downloads using torrents
 - a script to check signature on all packages
 - a script to check for binary or debug packages with no src.rpm,
or src.rpm with no binary packages in the tree

Do you see other things to do ?

I guess "copy the tree on a directory not exported, check this is using
hardlink for package, make sure that others files ( such as hdlist ) are
not hardlink in order to prepare for the release by doing mv".

I spoke about this with Nanar, and the idea is to minimize the data to
transfert by using hardlink on rpms, as they are all already on mirror
( since they are in cauldron ). This save the time needed to letting
people take the release, since rsync will not transfer them again.

However, this can be used only for rpm files, and not for hdlist, for
others files, etc, since they will be updated on cauldron and we do not
want to have them changed on stable as a side effect.

Yes, maybe official french forum is not the right word. It should rather
be the recommended forum ( as official has other meanings here ).

IIRC and correct me if I am wrong, the idea was to push forums to the
community to let them manage them, and to offer to host one if there is
no ressources.

Right, without the "ressources" reasoning :)
It was discussed and also written whenever people mentioned forums
(like Italian and Brazil) that there is the choice:
 - having their own forum on their own website, later to be linked
from the Mageia forums header (like in the international Mandriva
forum)
 - or requesting a forum in their language on the Mageia server inside
the Mageia forums structure (like the German forum)

MLO announced in public to switch their forum to Mageia and be the
French user forum for Mageia. That was also what we kept telling
french users in the english forum and on the mailing lists. I do not
recall any request or plan to open up a French forum inside the Mageia
forum.

BTW and OT: Talking about forums, it would be nice if the German forum

Normally a good start would be an announcement in the international
forum for all those who did not read the previous forum posts about
this issue. Unfortunately the matching section in the forum is not
reserved for official announcements by
board/council/forum-administration, so this "announcement" will be as

Currently, main forum authenticates directly against LDAP, including some
group mapping.

We have discussed then need for SSO capabilities, but so far no-one has
indicated *which* one (e.g. OpenId or Oauth) we should use (e.g. supported by
the clients we envisage).

It looks like it shouldn't be too much (development on identity) work to add
OAuth2 provider support (CatalystX::OAuth2::Provider.), but I haven't spent
much time trying to understand OAuth2.

As we discussed about some member leaving 3 months ago and the way to
handle privileges after they leaved ( on -discuss,
https://www.mageia.org/pipermail/mageia-discuss/20110307/003908.html ),
and combined to the discussion with communication team about "who goes
in credts", I thought we would need to plan a group for handling such
cases ( as we have entries on planet mandriva for previous contributers
).

So I created a group alumni ( from the term used to track former
graduate in american university, everything is more classy with a latin
word ), so people who are leaving the project can be tracked ( like we
did for founders ), and so they can keep their aliases and sort usage
( ie, change ml/bugzilla subscription on others sites, etc ) without
troubles.

As the ldap refuse to create a empty group, I had to place someone in
it, so you will see my name , and the one of the president as the owner.

So we can do something like that :

 - copy cauldron directory to directory .tmp-mageia-1
 - rsync cauldron to .tmp-mageia-1 until release day
 - on release day, we make hardlinks between files from '.tmp-mageia-1'
   and '1' directories
 - files in directory '1' become immediatly available on mirrors (as they
are hardlinks to files in .tmp-mageia-1 already uploaded)
 - after a few days we remove .tmp-mageia-1

Does it look correct ?

Ok, after discussing with Nanar, this is not what we will do. We will do
what was described by misc, hardlink rpms between cauldron and stable.
And Nanar will prepare a script to do it.

Alamut rebooted, but the boot order of the service is the following :
- sympa
- postgresql
- puppet

the issue is that sympa is waiting on postgresql to start, and
postgresql start after sympa. Puppet should take care of that, but it is
not started yet.

Solution was to restart sympa and postgresql.

Long term solutions would be :
- non blocking start for sympa ( and splitted initscripts )
- proper deps on the script ( so postgresql is started before )
- switch to systemd ( that would start everything at the same time )

SO stuff should be up again, except for valstar and jonund, I will do a

Bugzilla and forum are half working. Someone should not be able to log
on it, so it only work because your session is stored in a cookie.

As said, a 2nd ldap directory should be installed. It is not that hard,

Servers are back since 13h10, paris time. Problem was, according to

They are not run often, only one time at each release. And people should
read/modify the scripts before running them. So I think it's better if
it's not in a directory in $PATH so it is not run accidently.

This is likely because mkrel adds a dot even if %distro_section is defined
as %nil (but not when it is undefined). Below an example of how to fix it
in mkrel. I'm not a rpm macro guru so maybe it can be improved.

No, but at least it helps a little while others are working on fixing
the servers.

On the same line, would it be a good idea to try to totally decouple
the release production servers (stable releases RPMs, updates, ISOs,
services) from development servers (build system, dev
packages/updates/ISOs mirrors, etc.) so that if one fails, the other
is not directly impacted?

That requires more money (we can provision that), more work and some
more duplication and tricks to manage sync/push from dev to prod but
this would as well help not impacting users while the dev factory
would be down, and reciprocally.

Of course, that's a naive guess/idea/question so far.

> is not directly impacted?

It depend on how it is done.
First, as you said, that mean twice the ressource, and twice the work.
It also mean having twice the risk of a problem, if we go on the idea of
having 1 BS in a datacenter, and 1 BS on a second one.
( ie, we lose half of the functionality ).

I also fear that sooner or later, we will start to do stuff on the first
and not on the 2nd one, and thus end by having them not synchronized,
thus leading to various problem later ( like more complex interaction
with both ).

As I think we should work to make sure packagers work on stable release
too, and to do that, we should make sure that stable is not different
from cauldron from a process point of view.

So a better way would be to think how we could make the system more
redundant. IE, 2 BS instance in 2 DC, but both could be used for stable
and dev.

This is easy to do for builder ( quite trivial, just add more servers ).

The scheduler would require some state synchronisation, like a firewall,
so this is also doable ( using couchdb as a backend would do it for
us :p ).

The signature part is like the builder, easy to replicate ( except we
have to copy the private key ).

The main problems are the main mirror and svn ( or other vcs, even if
git would likely ease that ). Both are reference points that would be
hard to replicate in write mode. So we would have to do some kind of
continuous replication in both directions, and add some logic to youri
to manage failover.

For mirrors, we could do something with a custom sync system ( something
that use the NEVR of rpm to sync them ), and for svn, I guess using a
dvcs would make things much easier to do.

Now, we can also say that such problems are exceptional, and provided
that valstar/jonund could have been started automatically with proper
bios setup, we would have faced only 1 hour of downtime which is fully
bearable for a community project ( heck, debian security archive server
got burnt in 2002 and they survived :) ).

> That requires more money (we can provision that), more work and some
> more duplication and tricks to manage sync/push from dev to prod but

> would be down, and reciprocally.

Since we had already enough trouble to have everything hosted in 1
datacenter, I am not sure we can really provision enough for the long
term :/

And users were not affected at all, the mirrors are here for that.

Hello,

We currently have the following directories on mirrors for cauldron :
Mageia/distrib/cauldron/
Mageia/iso/cauldron/

For release 1, we can use this :
Mageia/distrib/1/
Mageia/iso/1/

And later for release 2, 3 ... :
Mageia/distrib/2/
Mageia/iso/2/

Yes, now that you work in Marseille :)

We have 2 choices :
1) fixing jonund and valstar, or
2) fixing jonund, then valstar on another time

fixing jonund is easy and could be done without much planning ( we just
disable jonund in the morning, you reboot, fix the bios, and so we can
dance ). I guess that a brutal test by unplugging the server could be
done.

Fixing valstar also require a reboot, and would have more impact. So I
think we should finish the 2nd ldap setup for that ( see
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=861 for the progress ) so the
disruption is as minimal as possible. I will try to finish this for the
end of the week.

For a mirror that's fine. Just make sure of the hardlinking... I'd

# cp -al devel distrib/N

and then change what must be different than try to hardlink only what

For hard links, Nanar made a script to do it :
http://svnweb.mageia.org/soft/release/trunk/fork-distribution?revision=1594&view=markup

All rpm files are hard links to cauldron. All other files (around 690MB)
are not hard links.

It's safe to hard link rpm files, as they are removed and created again
when updated. But for other files, most of them will be modified in
cauldron, and we are not sure if they are created/replaced when modified.

To whom it concerns:

See https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=860

I know that everybody is busy with the release. But this issue may be
as important for release time as announcements and other text. Would
it not be nice if we could add this "The German forum has opened up"
to the German translations of Mageia's release announcements, instead
of pointing German users to the MandrivaUser community?

Now, in order to have a working forum by release date (or just one day
after) there is only one small thing to do:
The set administrator (whoever that is) has to make Oliver and me
admins of the forum, so I can do all translations of the section
descriptions and other setup and we could open the forum.

About the redirection issue: this can be solved later, it will be ok
for the start to give the complete URL with trailing slash in the
announcements and the (German) web page.

Since http://mageia.mirror.dkm.cz/pub/mageia/ was not working ( not
updated since 10 days ), I removed it from the list.

The current version of the software do not check timestamp yet, and do
not let use disable mirrors ( or rather, let use disable them, but will
re enable it since the url is working ). So the workaround is to set a
invalid URL, so the check do not enable it again ( and to disable it too
).

However, since the mirrors check for url , it would not have appeared in
mirror list for Mageia 1 ( as it would not have synced anything ).

Now, someone must contact the mirror admin to fix this.
