*sigh*
You're right. I sort of wish we had gotten our act together sooner. Oh
well, live and learn. We'll do better for Mga3.

Also, about my last comment about the logo in the background. I think I
should clarify: the logo as it is is both visible and unobtrusive. It
clearly brands the image as part of Mageia and doesn't attract too much
attention to itself, allowing people to view the image unencumbered.
My question was more about the use of the shadow behind the logo (which
helps it stand out but not so much that it pokes you in the eye). Is that
OK as far as not changing the logo is concerned?

Hi folks,

Hi everybody.
We've pretty much all agreed (or at least, everybody who has bothered to
respond agreed) that we are going to go with the logo in the bottom
right corner with the more prominent shadow, the drop-shadow.
Now, some people thought that it still isn't very visible. I personally
think it looks great, but I am only one person.
So, I mad two more mockups: a greyscale logo and a white logo. (I tried
a black logo and it was just awful).
Grayscale: http://i.imgur.com/5WOFr.jpg
White: http://i.imgur.com/yVsNd.jpg
Natural: http://i.imgur.com/1rdLL.jpg
Please disregard JPEG artifacts, we will distribute the images as PNGs.
Please respond with your thoughts.
Again, the final position of the logo will depend on the resolution of
the image so that it won't interfere with the KDE taskbar.
Max

Hi Josh

I am replying later than intended.

A newsletter is an ok idea, but I think a free PDF magazine for people
to download with a new issue each month, would be a much better idea in
the future, when our community is big enough. Something like
http://pclosmag.com/ and http://fullcirclemagazine.org ,but aimed at
Mageia users and potential Mageia users.

Full Circle Magazine also has a podcast, and having an official podcast
for Mageia I think is a great idea. Unfortunately I don't have someone
else to do one with at the moment, and I don't want to try and start one
on my own. Also my idea for how I would want the podcast to be like,
isn't really going to work unless there are enough people who would like
to come on as a guest. Ideally I would want most episodes to have a
guest. A guest who is a Mageia contributor, or just a user that would
like to share their story about why they are using Mageia and what they
think of it.

I will be going on three or two podcasts to talk about Mageia 2 :).
Possibly more even if other people would like me on theirs.

I assume at the moment with the magazine idea just like with the Mageia
podcast idea, currently lacking the helpers. However starting off with a
weekly or monthly news letter would probably be much easier at the moment.

With certain Mageia related projects, it really will help to have enough
people first that would like to help with the project. Hopefully Mageia
2 will bring in a lot of new contributors :).

As for websites, I think that in general the more websites that mention
Mageia in a positive way the better for the project :).

Because it may be that either:

1.) There wasn't enough access, or interest in that particular
incarnation of those earlier prototyped concepts, or

2.) We haven't stumbled across the formula with the right zeal and
appeal that we're all looking for.

Yes I think we may want to take a look at those all but abandoned
vehicles, but also think that we shouldn't try to force the mold. These
parts of our infrastructure were launched way back before Before Beta 1
IIRC, and if their relative failure is a result of #2 above, then we may
want to keep looking for something that appeals more to ????

For example, our original forums were based on FudForum, software I
particularly like for some projects, and not for others. They were
basically buried within a free hosting solution, which wasn't
acceptable, but no attempts were made to migrate any of the discussions
to the current forums, and no links were provided when we finally did
settle on the forumware we are using now.

I would like to avoid beginning to move forward with real and exciting
content, forced into a software solution that will simply prove once
more, that it is for whatever reason unsuitable for our purposes. I'm
not saying that what we already have is unsuitable, just that we need to
think, and brainstorm, and sandbox without restriction until we all go,
"Hey that's pretty bitchen! Let's use that".

I don't get the whole "Planet" thing. never did. But really, anything
ewboontoo leaves a bad taste in my mouth anyway, and we're really trying
to set ourselves apart from others anyway.

in an earlier post, (and I think this was you Romain, who pointed it
out), there needs to be some style applied to planet.mageia.org. This is
going to require the coordination of MarCom w/the web development team
along with the artwork team in order to accomplish, and there's really
no point in even pursuing that until Trish is provided with the
credentials so that she can delegate administration of this resource to
members of the team here.

It is pretty bland, and ugly, compared to the news and blog sites of
other distros - even when compared to the minimalist approach used by
debian GNU/Linux.

Let's get these credentials to Trish, stop this nonsense with the
infinite transferring of extension to extension, and get on with it.

In the meantime, if we add content to the forward face of Mageia, let's
make sure we can abandon the software at anytime and fold that content
into software that in the future we may find more conducive to our needs.

It was a fiasco, because there was no response, little direction, and
ambiguous command and control related to the administration of this
so-called *existing* infrastructure. The initiative that Josh and
Sebastian showed in this was, albeit politely, shot down because we
currently have an existing, yet perhaps inferior software service in
place, for some of what we're talking about.

Like Josh indicated, an SQL dump of the MariaDB database and a push from
whatever RCS he used to deploy his POC beta is simple enough to migrate
to a VirtualHost container under Mageia.org's HTTPD farm.

heh. We do incorporate *MariaDB* INSTEAD of *MySQL*, don't we? LOL! Or
are we using EllisonCo software, missing yet another opportunity to set
ourselves apart from other Linux distros? ;)

Kindest regards,

Yes there's definately a breakdown somewhere. Thanks for your diligence
in this matter Josh.

Trish, I think we really do need to bring this up at the next council
meeting.

I'm sure that if there was adequate coordination on issues such as this,
Josh wouldn't have had to self-host, and from what I have been able to
ascertain he would have preferred to move forward under the magiea.org
domain anyway.

I'm rather surprised he hasn't thrown his hands up and said, "whatev",
already.

Hang in there Josh There's something broken in the community's
communication infrastructure and we may be forging ahead with arbitrary
technological and production deadlines at the expense of a quality
*community*.

This is Open Source - there really is no real timeline; simply goals
that currently push for product releases at the expense of coordinated
efforts.

Most people here know that I'm a Slacker, having used that distro since
it's inception, and there's a lesson to be learned there: "The next
release of Slackware will be released when it's ready", is almost a
mantra for a reason.

Things mature in their own time. We can set goals and artificial
deadlines (most deadlines in the world, with the exception of court
dates, are indeed artificial), but we should be willing and able to
adjust those dates based upon the *smoothly acheived* deadlines, derived
from the self-imposed goals we set for such events to occur.

I hope that helps :)

Kindest regards,

Quoting myself here, but before I put up any of these on the wiki I need
some clarification/direction on the matter.

We have a budget. And some of these sites are not free (Nor should we
expect them to be). Some of the sites have *some* free services, and
some are actually free.

Each has varying targets.

We spent around $2500.00 on stickers and such, so I can't imagine that
an allocation of say, ten percent of that would be asking too much to
earmark for MarCom's budget in this regard.

I need to hear back whether we're going to have this support and that
there is a potential to release this *neccessary* funding for us.

If we can spend ten times this amount of stickers and t-shirts, then I
believe it is prudent to allocate the pittance I'm asking for to reach
millions in the mainstream - not just a few hundred or so at a couple of
conventions.

>
> I don't have any copy, alas, but we need to get three general things
> started:
>
> 1. the Mageia blog post for release
> 2. a generic release announcement/press release for distribution

Okay Trish has hit the nail on the head with respect to the priorities
we should be focusing on above. Let's move off the infinite loop of the
install screens now that it's a dead issue for the time being and take
up the reigns of the tasks above that Trish has laid out for us :)

wrt 1.) I think perhaps a good way to start is to get from Anne, an
example of an announcement that she, as our spokesperson, might issue.

We can nip in the butt any possibility that we'll be caught off guard
again and embarrassed, by taking this proposed sample statement that she
envisions releasing, fixing it, and then, as her teleprompter returning
it as the statement we actually ARE going to issue.

2.) This I've addressed above. I want to know what our budget is going
to be, and zero is not acceptable considering the monies spent on
schwag, that I pointed out above (Nothing wrong with scwhag, but I don't
recall that marketing expense ever coming through our team for approval,
nod, consensus, etc.).

3.) Very good milestone to achieve. How might we "solicit reviews", and
what are many of the questions we're seeing on the forums that we can
draw from for this, aside from...

"What sets Mageia apart from other major Linux distros?" That's question
number one IMO :)

Kindest regards,

We have a really big problem right now. We don't even have the
administrative credentials for the services we're in charge of.

It doesn't hurt to sandbox beta technologies anyway, and if it is
something that might fly then we can migrate to the mageia.org zone.

One really good reason for putting things like that up is the complete
lack of command and control, that I have pointed out in another post,
with regards to sandboxing these branstorm/poc/sandboxes/betas, within
our own DNS domain.

Yes, we are operating in a relative vacuum in that regard. unable to
even manage our own resources, by figuring out who has the darn
passwords for doing so.

It was discussed in advance too, in chan on IRC and on this list.

this, presumably temporary, shortcoming of our project.

I'm not a member of the artwork team and won't be subscribing to the

I do have another question. Perhaps it is simply another symptom of the

Q: Why, when we have our own infrastructure, is the artwork team posting
development work to imgur.com?

I would think that having all three images posted on a single page on

There are five currently agreed upon (or not) sets of copy for the
installation screens for those who perform graphical installs of Mageia.

Following Ennael's post which seemingly scraps that out of control
juggernaut (Good call IMO), There's plenty of time to work on this for
Mageia 2.1, Mageia 3 Beta 1, whatev :)

That having been said, we keep asking ourselves about what sets Mageia
apart from other distros (IOW, why use Mageia instead of CentOS or
Fedora, considering that Mageia is 'yet another RPM based distro').

If we all keep asking ourselves this question, and all we get back is
one little control center app, then that is, operationally, the main
difference isn't it (Please, flame me on this one, I really want someone
to take enough offense to this that I hear what makes our distro
operationally and technologically different enough to compel someone to
adopt)?

On the non-production level, we have been receiving much feedback.
Community, Community, Community. Great? Where?

Josh has attempted, along with Sebastian and a few others to address
this issue and sandbox a few proof of concept ideas. I won't go there in
this post, but applaud that effort and point to the fact that because
that effort has support, that we're lacking there with respect to our
current *community* offerings.

What I would like to suggest, is that in the future, one of the screens
direct people, post-installation, to their root user's email inbox to
get more involved, and for further information on post-installation
matters - you might be tired of hearing this, but we do this with Slackware.

"You're almost finished installing the most spectaculicious of all Linux
distributions, but take time to check the email for root when your done
for getting involved with the community" - yeah, a bit loquacious but
you get the idea....

Once the user is finished installing they have post-installation topics,
including an email with links to join certain aspects of the community
(which do not as of yet really exist).

Just thought I'd offer that one up while chewing on a cud of alfalfa :)

Sebastian, What I *think* I was able to understand, was your suggestion
that everything (everything) feeds into indenti.ca, because that is the
one route with which we can feed that has a path to feed all of the
other social bookmarking/networking sites.

Did I get that right?

Can you do up a graphical flow chart that demonstrates this downstream
effect? As MarCom, and if you're correct, we need to be able to sell the
idea to the council and finalize this news feed concept.

More than anything. I want to understand it :)

I can't believe that no one caught this misnomer LOL.

Actually, the convention is to have everything lower case, since it's an
URL.

For example, you can http://twitter.com/mageia or
http://twitter.com/Mageia or http://twitter.com/mAgEiA ;)

The same goes pretty much for most Social networking and bookmarking
sites, including FB.

Finally! Whew!

The signal to noise ratio was up by an order of magnitude, so I chose to
layout for a while, watch, and address points of relevance when the
traffic died down.

I think most things I'm commenting on are still relevant, otherwise the
drafts I penned would have been roundfiled (many were, since those
issues eventually answered themselves).

I really tired of having to watch the copy for the install screens
continually revisited, and it looks like it finally came to a conclusion
- - and I drew conclusions from that mess that I've addressed too.

Most existing threads, but couple of new threads here that I'm offering,
and some more relevant than others.

Our mail server seems to historically suck pretty bad - sometimes a post
shows up quickly, and sometimes hours later. I dunno what the other
folks on the admin team are failing to do and I don't have access to
troubleshoot it but there is an failing there which can stymie the
timeliness of responses for collaborative work.

Maybe I'll track down the person who has direct administration over the
SMTP servers later and beleaguer them with my incessant badgering till
they fix it - but not now LOL.

Anyway, and in no particular order, here comes the maelstrom :)

That's because, as marketing folks, we've been publishing some decent
copy when there wasn't anything particularly relevant to produce copy for.

So you're not alone there :)

That lack of satisfaction comes as a result of not really having
anything to say, while being endowed with the skill to say it anyway to
make it seem as if there is.

I offered up one, I think, relevant point (along with another
communications vehicle - the root's inbox) to consider including in our
next spin of Mageia.

Most of the points we provided copy for are just inventive ways of
saying we're not any different than other major distros. The Niche
distros have no problems expressing why you should use them, while we
haven't discovered yet what it is we should be saying.

But when we do, I have confidence that we'll be able to say it with
eloquence.

Maybe we should focus on how we're different from say, debian GNU/Linux
- - the most completely inclusive (wrt software packages) of all Linux
distros, and the greatest success story on the power of the community in
that collaborative regard.

Right now it's hard for me to imagine how we're operationally all that
different from Redhat.

I offered up a hint in one of my posts by directing attention to
MariaDB, hint, hint.

Not to say that MariaDB should be the major SQL server in our default
install, but to showcase the possibilities of being different (um..
better, to be sure).

we need to know how to handle credential delegations (the moonmoon
platform doesn't go for multiple user accounts for now). I'd perfectly
go with the "better apologize than ask for permission" in that area,

Well then... ;) I feel your pain :)

I've been a member of the sysadmin team now for oh, I dunno, maybe 15 or
16 months or so. I haven't bothered to try and offer any of my services
there in over a year now, however, basically because of what you and Max
have reported in the last couple of posts.

I became more than interested in MarCom primarily because of you rda. I
suppose I could dig up the post in my personal archives somewhere but I
won't so please forgive me for my paraphrasing of your statement.

You said something to the effect of, "Here on the marketing team we will
have the unenviable opportunity to be overworked, overlooked, not
acknowledged and contributing much of most. Welcome!" (I told you my
paraphrase wouldn't do you much justice lol).

I took that as a challenge, and have put forth effort where I could, and
also when I could. I almost folded a couple of times but decided to just
lay out instead because there's usually an ebb and flow.

I completely understand the lack of time when we have to work on other
things for our rice and top ramen LOL. So don't beat yourself up Romain ;)

Basically, what I am is a systems engineer and sysadmin. That's what
I've been doing since ARPAnet/MILnet days. I'm also a service provider.

To me, three or four days to process a request is bordering on
negligence. We're seeing three and four months here. It takes litterally
45 seconds to create a user account, another minute to create a database
for that person and three or four minutes to create a VirtualHost
container so they can SSH in, do their work, upload their stuff, and
dance around in ecstasy.

I had no idea that even Max, being a Team Lead, was having such... Well
I can't even begin to imagine his frustration - it far exceeds what
we've been seeing here at MarCom. At least our team itself is pretty good :)

So what I think *might* help alleviate some of the problems here, at
least wrt prototyping and sandboxing, etc., would be to offer to deploy
a Mageia box for such purposes.

The only thing that would be left *wanting* is for whomever handles the
DNS to add an A RR here and there.

I would recommend that All development of the sort that Josh has been
doing adhere to a standard convention like agile or whatev, although I
could really care less and people could actually fly by the seat of
their pants.

What I mean by that is that it is prudent, to have development take
place on a desktop or home server, and then push everything up with git
and similar RCS tools to, let's call it a staging box that I launch for
MarCom.

I would give the root credentials to you and/or Trish, and aside from
snapshotting it, will take no part in administration of this box. My
stuff is in a private suite in One Wilshire, all storage is on a SAN
cluster, and so far I run a 100% Proliant network farm - no commodity boxes.

I've owned my own IP blocks for twenty years that were given to me by
nic.ddn.mil back in my MILnet days and command my own reverse DNS
directly at ARIN.

At this time I can deploy a box under ESXi 5 - fully HA fault tolerant
and clustered. For what we need I figure 512MB RAM and a couple of Xeon
cores will suffice - I can make adjustments where necessary but for a
web and database server that should be more than enough unless a bunch
of people are running Eclipse or Netbeans or something.

No ircd stuff or problematic daemons like that at this time please.
Anything not mentioned just lemme know and I'll prolly give it a nod as
long as it isn't something that script kiddies like to roll around in.

If more types of database servers are needed I may need to bump the RAM
a bit if traffic gets heavy, but it should be fine for MariaDB/MySQL,
PostgreSQL, and maybe even Sybase or Oracle 9i all at the same time - I
have noncom free licenses for the latter two if anyone needs to run
stuff that off the wall.

I would prefer to wait a couple or three weeks and then deploy it under
Xen, which would completely remove me from the loop, provide you with a
virtual serial console, and you would be responsible for all
backups/snapshots yourself.

If the need is urgent I could deploy the machine under VMware, but I
will have to do the install myself and turn over the root pwd to you.

If we can wait a couple of weeks I can simply provide you with the
customer portal credentials where you can manage this server, do one
click backups, destroy/reinstall from various distros (yes Mageia is one
of them and presumably the one we want to run Mageia related stuff
under), start/stop the box, etc.

The reason we would need to wait a couple of weeks for the Xen is
because at the moment, I have no stock. my stuff is in pretty high
demand and I'm sitting on three new Proliant's that I have to configure
the iLO for and then take then down to the datacenter and rack them.
Then I have to enable the stock in inventory.

I will do no firewalling. That's up to you, and you know what the big
bad world is like out there.

Personally, on all of my own machinery, you can't even FTP - only SCP or
SFTP, often to obscure port numbers, but it's all just the same thing if
you use Dreamweaver, Filezilla, Bluefish, whatev. I also usually enable
X11-Forwarding so a simple 'ssh -Y box.sld.tld' will usually suffice to
run whichever GUI apps that one really needs on the box.

I would offer to do more, launch a box, harden it, administer security
and access, etc., but given the cold shoulder I got when I joined the
sysadmin team almost a year and a half ago I figure they should be
accountable for something.

If that works out, bear in mind I have unlimited bandwidth, unlimited
resources once I allocate them, and PB's of SAN storage.

Oh, one other thing. More than anything I was making a suggestion as to
MariaDB to be the default INSTEAD of MySQL - no one can tell the
difference anyway, except that the prompt is different and it runs
circles around MySQL - it's the same thing by the same guy, but I
suppose that's a matter for the council and packaging team to deliberate
(Just thought I'd throw that bone out there :) ).

Well, think on that. And if it's something that will benefit the
community I'm more than happy to provide it. Sorry I can't be much help
with the actual web design stuff, I wish my CSS and javascript was better.

This would enable people to have sandboxes or prototype/poc stuff
without burdening the main Mageia server resources (Mine are I'm sure
more robust anyway). Whoever holds root though, I EXPECT that they will
be responsible when it comes to DR and security, as well as the creation
of DBs and VirtualHost containers and non-priv'd user accounts so those
who need to can sandbox.

I'm sorry I'm not offering more in the way of actually managing the box
for the community, hardening, and taking on a more active management
role with it, but I just don't see the responsiveness from other parts
of the community that I would require to take on that role, let alone
the responsibility - Max, Josh, you, and others are expressing a lot of
frustration there and I'm just not willing to put in that much work w/o
knowing it will actually be utilized.

Lemme know. Or if you have any thoughts on the matter, since this is an
open ended offer take your time and moll it around with a few other
(responsible and reactive) folks in the appropriate places before
getting back to me. On or offlist.

tallship now removes removes his SA hat and puts his MarCom hat back on
coz it's fun and challenging and outside his comfort zone :)

Kindest regards,

 +
Hi all,

Please put this one somewhere where you can check it over the next
couple of weeks - it's going to be our work-in-progress document until
release.

PLEASE DO THINGS IN ORDER OF PRIORITY.

Sorry; I know I shouldn't shout; but!

Priority #1:

The release texts. We've got a space ready to go in the Sandbox, please
let's get on with it.

Head over to the Sandbox and start writing.

We need to have a first draft ready for the next Council meeting, and
if I have to write it all by myself over Easted, I won't be a happy
woman!

Deadline for completion: 23 April.

Priority #2:

Do some writing for the new-look website - I'll have details about this
shortly (just waiting for some more from Romain).

Deadline for completion: 23 April.

Both #1 and #2 have to go from us to i18n, so we need to honour the
deadline.

Priority #3:

Get the planet sorted. Dams has come back to me and Josh and will
organise the login this week, but I'll keep chasing until it happens.

Priority #4:

Get our press release off to all the sites on our list, *before* the
release happens... 8-)

Priority #5:

Have a post-mortem, and make sure that this schemozzle doesn't happen
again next time.

Priority #0:

USE THE SANDBOX. Really. Email the list with an idea, but write it up
properly (not half-baked) and put it in the sandbox. When we've nailed
it down, move it to the main page, then we can DO stuff. We've indulged
in way more wittering than we really need to!

Cheers!

> Hello,
>
> As seen in bug this bug:
>
> Marcom and Artwork teams (and maybe other teams later) need to have a
> storage space to upload temporary files, to share work in progress.
>
> To do that, I think a simple solution would be to use WebDAV :
> - we setup webdav with ssl, and allow upload from users from artwork
> ldap group
> - we setup apache to distribute files from this directory, as
> http://tmp.mageia.org/artwork (disabling execution of any script)
>
> What do you think ?
>
> Other options that I see are :
> - using an ftp server instead of webdav to upload the files. However
> the connection is not encrypted with ftp.
> - using scp/sftp, but this require to have posix accounts for all
> users

[Mageia-marketing] Mageia 2 Web site changes option

 Romain d'Alverny + rdalverny at gmail.com +
 Tue Apr 3 17:44:15 CEST 2012 +

 +
Hi there, (please followup the discussion in mageia-marketing, not in
-artwork or -webteam)

here's a peak at one possible option for Mageia 2 release Web site
update (not full at once, but for most important pages, and driving
other pages into that direction too).

The rationale behind this update is articulated as such:

 A) the home page (mageia.org/) is targetted at one-time/first
time/casual visitors, with a single, main call to action: download
Mageia. There are others actions, such as: contribute, get older
version(s), learn more about the product, and the community and the
project. But there is no other navigation. It's really a poster-like
page, direct to a main action, with the following main channel for
visitors:

 - home => action 1: get the software
 - download => action 1: select your download
 - while-downloading => actions: how to use, how to contribute, learn
more about Mageia, what feedback you could provide

Pushing this page calls for updating the Downloads index page design
as well as the post-download page.

 B) a dedicated, community home page is for people coming back again
and again (contributors, activ users) with three main incoming
sources:
   - start.mageia.org (loaded by Mageia browsers)
   - a mageia.org/coop or another keyword.
   - home page lower priority action (see bottom nav links "Community")

Here go: news, calendar, teams, docs, and links to the various
resources/tools on mageia.org in an organized way.

 C) for past-home page pages, a new top navigation bar, organizing
more of the site and making it more accessible from everywhere;
especially, for easier embedding/deployment/update of it, the navbar
will be available in different fashion: a dynamic Web service will
produce the needed HTML/JS for it, and a JS snippet will allow to
dynamically insert it into all sites (so there's little integration
work). The top navigation bar exact content is still up to debate, but
the very top categories should not exceed 5/6 entries at most.

A, B and C are not strongly attached to each other, however they are
part of the same proposal. There's a missing download page (and
animation) from A page, but that's a start to go.

A (home page) is http://i.imgur.com/7Vqq6.png . It's a bold move for
us. It's heavily inspired from a Firefox page which is a nice example
of a product landing page. From a charter point of view, it reuses the
white/blue gradient from our original logo and site elements. It may
benefit from a very light, thin pattern in the blue background, or not
(not sure). Text copy may need tweaks.

B (community page) is ... still pending, I'm not satisfied with what I
have so far. We have http://www.mageia.org/contribute/ but I'm not
sure to change this one right now. Hope to have something to roll out
for review next week.

C (global nav) is ... pending too. I will roll it out for testing
later this week. What it needs is to refine its structure; currently
planned is:

 * Mageia (links to a special map page of the site)
 * About Us: mageia project info/history & mageia.org organization
info, what is under http://mageia.org/en/about/ already
 * Downloads:
   - Mageia 1 and 2 downloads and features pages,
   - updates downloads info and mirrors
   - mirrors
   - specific software (we used to host a specific mgaonline package for)
 * Community:
   - news (blogs, planets, other?), calendar
   - introduction to contributing
   - forums, mailing-lists, IRC
   - wiki, bugzilla, other doc resources
   - contributors corners
 * Support: current http://www.mageia.org/en/support/ page redispatched:
   - users support: community and commercial vendors
   - (security) updates info
   - product lifecycle
   - hardware stuff
 * Contribute: necessary? as a short link to the contributors guide
 * About You: not available for now, maybe moved somewhere else, but
supported by identity and other mageia.org services, would act as a
portal for every single user, to monitor her own activity/data.
 * Search (over mageia.org domain)

This new nav answer three concerns:
 - /platform: allow an easier, consistent deployment of the top nav
updates through all mageia.org; using here a javascript snippet;
 - /layout: embed the Mageia logo in the navigation bar, so that it
too brands the page to the project;
 - /content: better structure the mageia.org domain into main activities/zones.

I know that some may worry that some links currently in the top nav
bar won't be available/visible anymore in all mageia.org as a first
level item. It's a matter of context and of the very details of the
implementation and the navigation channels.

I don't have a B plan about that at this time, but it's not mandatory
to change all things either. So it either works, or it doesn't.

Note that (for a future/long term question), separating what is about
the product (Features, Downloads, Support, News) from what is about
the project/community (About Us, Community, part of Support,
Contribute) would help a lot (different life cycles for the sites),
but it needs to have a separate name for each too.

 + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

Hi Bradley,

> We have a budget. And some of these sites are not free (Nor should we
> expect them to be). Some of the sites have *some* free services, and
> some are actually free.

> I need to hear back whether we're going to have this support and that
> there is a potential to release this *neccessary* funding for us.

If we need a budget, we actually have to put it together before asking
for it; can you put something together with costs and priorities that
we can use as a starting point?

Personally I'd like to concentrate on free content, rather than
paid-for content, but let's have a look at your proposal and see?

I helped with the install screen texts quite a lot, and made sure the
graphics designer had made the install screen images with the marketing
team text, two different versions in fact. It's ashame that none of that
is going to be used in Mageia 2. Or maybe Anne's using screen shots

Yep that's basically it, if first send the message from Identica it can
also go to Twitter, and from Twitter some how to Facebook. If send the
message first from Diaspora to Identica, it can then go to Twitter and
like I said before from Twitter to Facebook some how.

With Identica got to use ! to send to the group
http://identi.ca/group/mageia however Twitter only uses # which would
send to a tag on Identica http://identi.ca/tag/mageia and the Identica
bridge to Twitter automatically converts ! to # when sending the message
to Twitter.

Yes Identica and Diaspora aren't mainstreame social networking sites
such as Twitter and Facebook, however Mageia has a presence there, and
so they should be taken seriously as well and ideally by the whole
Mageia social networking community. Another reason for them to be taken
seriously would be that they are open social networking sites unlike
Twitter and Facebook. Identica has mainly Linux users using the site it
seems, and I think that's the same for Diaspora.

Twitter can't send to Identica directly for example.

Anyway that's a good idea I could do a chart or something like that
later on, trying to explain this stuff as well.

I am still quite new to sending emails to mailing lists really. Took me
over a year to join most of the Mageia mailing list's for a few reasons.
Then I started sending to them as I started to join teams in December.
Some of the Mageia mailing lists are the first mailing lists that I am
sending messages to and then a bit later on the LUG as well.

In early January I finally bothered to join the LUG mailing list, which
I am glad I have done. Been to the LUG once so far, and that was fun :).
Would have been twice, but some travel issues and there wasn't really a
proper meeting that time anyway. Gave away most of the Mageia 1 KDE and
Gnome CD's from FOSDEM 2012 that I wanted to get rid of last month as
well :).

Going to the LUG probably at the end of this month :).

Really when it comes to online communication I prefer much more instant
communication such as IRC and instant messaging, however now since
Mageia I am starting to become much more of an emails person as well.

Loads of open source projects have planets and here are two more:
http://planet.gnome.org/ http://planetkde.org/

I guess Planets for opensource/freesoftware projects are fashionable at
the moment. I mean something that by many people is expected at the
moment for a opensource/freesoftware project to have.

I used to help a lot with Ubuntu in IRC in 2008, 2009, and 2010. I used
to chat to loads of different people who were using or trying out Ubuntu
in private message as well for example. Also I have seen new users at
the time put this kind of thing on IRC: How they think the Ubuntu
community is really good, and that's what made them use Ubuntu.

I don't like the distro itself that much any more for various reasons
since 9.04/9.10, however will still try it out at times. Oh I know, and
I have seen it for myself a lot, they have a very good community for
their distro and it's been like that for many years.

What I think as contributors of a new distribution, we should learn a
lot from the other distro's such as Ubuntu when it comes to running a
community and providing something for a community. Do some of the same
things like we do at the moment such as, planets, and forums, and IRC
channels and so on. However we need to also think about doing something
different as well communitywise that will attract new users to our
distro, rather than the others, and try and do that as well. Well if the
long term goal is to try and have Mageia being one of the most used
distros. If we don't do something different that attracts many new
users to our community, well why should a new user pick Mageia over many
other distro's really?

If we are going to have a rather big user base for Mageia, we need to
keep on working on the community making it better and better, not just
the distro itself!

Thing is with the control centre, Mandriva obviously also has a version
of it as well, but also PC Linux OS, Unity Linux, and I think all the
distro's based on Unity Linux. Unity Linux is more of a distribution
builder than a distro or something like that.

Probably wouldn't take that much for loads of other distro's to have a

I think that distro's collaboration is a rather good thing indeed such
as the AppStream project: http://identi.ca/notice/92041870 However
Mageia could do with something proper in the distro that makes it unique
from all or many other distro's, something much more than the control
centre. That is worth having for many users, if it's going to have a
much bigger user base. I remember some of the founders had this idea

Hi

On the 30th March someone started emailing the LUG mailing list that I
am on, about an event for the local IT and business community that will
be at one of the universities here. The idea of the event is so that
the Computer Science department can build up a closer connection with
the local IT and business community.

It's a event for IT related people such as, developers, web designers,
business users, hobbyists, DBAs, and SysAdmins.

The event is a workshop where groups can promote them selves, with side
rooms available as well.

There were replies on the mailing list and I replied as well. I told him
how I am contributing to Mageia and wanted to build up more interest in
the project in the local community and so on.

After sending him my requested phone number and then whilst earlier
talking to him on the phone it was suggested that I did a Lightning talk
about Mageia.

If I am to do this it will be in front of about 100 people it seems,
that are university staff and students and people from the local IT and
business community.

I may have not done a talk before in front of such a big audience, but I
did do a talk about Tim Berners-Lee, and web standards in front of one
of my college classes, in 2005/6. So I am not that worried that it will
be in front of a lot of people. In fact I quite like the idea of doing a
talk in front of a lot of people :).

I think it would be a very good opportunity and experience for me to go
to this event and also whilst there to do a Lightning Talk about Mageia.
So if anyone would like to help me prepare for this talk, please do so.

Oliver told me that he has some slides for a talk he did before that he
can send me.

At this time I don't know when it will be exactly. I have time to think
about if I am going to do the talk or not, but I'll probably get back to
him soon to say that I will do it.

Hi,

I'm Teemu Otala from LibreStickers.com (site still under construction).
LibreStickers.com will be a new webshop where one can purchase reasonable priced Open Source related stickers; *nix like distros, software, databases and programming languages. The selection will depend on the responses/approvals from the trademark/logo owners.
The idea is to raise the awareness of Open Source software with fashionable small stickers (18x26mm) that developers and users can use to decorate their hardware (mainly laptops).
The site is commercial, but it is not really about making money; just enough to keep it floating (estimated price for a sticker is around 0.70-1 euros at the moment).
LibreStickers.com would also contribute 0,10€/sold sticker back to the project.

I would like to request your permission to use Mageia logo and perhaps text Mageia on a single sticker - see attached file for early draft version.
The sticker will be the highest possible quality: matt laminated vinyl with quality printing.
Could you please respond if this request can be approved even partially, and if so what should be changed in the sticker design.
The idea is to get these ready for LinuxTag2012 in Berlin, I would like to visit Mageia stand to give out some free stickers to the project members. The actual website should be ready by beginning of June 2012.

The darker one then (for contrast). Could you see that with him (suggesting)?

As for the formal go, I'd like the point to be raised at the board,
and to be noticed by council (I'll forward the request) as it's about
brand management, and there's a financial matter. But we could still

Hi All,

After a lengthy absence, it's time to update the planets again. The
guidelines for having your blog added can be found at the following wiki
page: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Planets. We want them to be full of
those who make Mageia what it is ahead of the 2 launch. This doesn't
need to be only developers or major team members, because we *all* are
Mageia.

For now, until a more formal process is in place, please just send me
your name, and a link to your blog. The blogs should primarily be
related to Mageia and/or Free Software and are expected to comply with
the Mageia Code of Conduct (http://www.mageia.org/en/about/code-of-conduct/)

Any questions or comments please reply to this message or email me
directly. We would also eventually like to come up with a better overall
design for the planets, so if you are someone who is web design
inclined, please also contact me.

Thanks!

It seems that the event will be on Saturday 19th May, which does not
leave that much time to have official Mageia 2 Live CD's made and sent
to myself from abroad. Since the release is now going to be on Tuesday
15th May instead (,unless delayed again which it probably won't be).

I could try giving away Mageia 1 CD's at the event if more are sent, but
I think giving away Mageia 2 will be much better.

I wouldn't mind having stickers sent to give out at the event and LUG.

Also it would be good to have papers with official information about
Mageia in English that can be given to people at events and LUG's for
example. At FOSDEM 2012 there was, but in French (and I came back home
with two anyway). Of course this is probably really a task for Marcom.

I think really going by the phone call I had, that he wanted me to do a
longer talk. However then I said how I hadn't done this kind of thing
before, so the Lightning talk got suggested.

Indeed Lightning talks are short about 15 minutes or so, and so topics
have to be quick and to the point, especially if going to leave any time
for questions.

A Lightning talk is usually a summary or something like that I think, of
a project at an event for example, and as you would probably expect the
Lightning talks will be at the end of this event.

Knowing me once I got started and feeling comfortable enough I would
probably want more than 15 minutes or so really. I mean I talked about
Desktop Linux and so on, with someone for three hours and a bit when I
went on a podcast for my first time last year for example. Of course
that's different since it was done on the computer.

Also when I did that talk about Tim Berners-Lee and web standards in
2005 in front of one of my college classes, it was only meant to be
about 10 minutes, but was 20 or so.

It seems that I could do a longer talk or presentation and a lightning talk.

I'll email more about this event soon, once I have found out a bit more.
Currently waiting for another email reply from him.

I thought about it earlier, but I would actually want the talk/s I am
doing to be recorded, so that I can watch it myself, and show lot's of
people, well if I am happy enough with it :). Not told the person
organising the event this yet, but something that can be done later on.

Yes that's the beauty, and the bane of it. If you really want to just
jam it out in Toastmaster fashion and rehearse it, it works.

But if it takes a few minutes for you to warm up and you like to work
from notes as opposed to a rehearsed speach you'll prolly find that just

That's the very same file. The use of having it in svn would be to
know what was changed and when (and why, in the commit message). It
would allow to have several persons able to edit this config, whereas
through moonmoon, there is only one admin account.

It would be located in the web svn repository
(http://svn.mageia.org/web/) so commit rights would be those of the
Web team, and you would of course get this right.

But the right solution is the one that fits best those in charge of
the planets (there are several, not only English one): up to you.

Hi all,

I had promised that we'd have a first draft of the release texts ready
for inspection at this meeting, but: we're not there yet.

For the website, Romain will be updating marcom on the structure this
week, when we can get to work on that. For the blog post - too easy, we
can put that together very quickly. The only other one which might take
a bit of work is the press release, which I'm hoping we can get some
input from council members as to what people would like to see in the
release - then it will take shape very quickly.

So, see you at the meeting, if everyone's not stunned with chocolate...

Cheers!

I have looked at the sandbox a few times, but I don't know what is

Hi

I only get 5 minutes for the Mageia Lightning Talk. So any help would be
appreciated for the talk as a whole, from how I will introduce myself,
what I will say about Mageia, to how I will end the talk. However I have
some ideas for this.

I would like some help making some slides for the talk and I would also
appreciate having help in creating a talk description for the event
website: http://www.itmegameet.co.uk/

The event won't be like FOSDEM where certain talks get recorded. As a
result mine won't be recorded and put online, unless I can get someone
from the audience to record it for me. However I can probably get
someone from the audience to record it for me on their mobile phone for
example, but the quality of the video may not be that good as a result
if that.

It also seems that some people from other parts of the UK that I know
online who use or know about Mageia may come to the event as well to see
my talk. Some people from my LUG may be at the event as well.

Since the event is a few days after the Mageia 2 release if certain
people are coming I plan to book a restaurant as well for the evening
and celebrate the Mageia 2 release for example :).

With Ubuntu they have release parties after a new final version has been
released: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BuildingCommunity/RunningReleaseParty

There won't be a Mageia side room or stand at the event, but hopefully I
can be sent official Mageia 2 CD's that I can take with me in a bag and
stickers as well. Also I did contact Oliver about this before.

With official Mageia 2 CD's there wouldn't be much time to make and then
send them from abroad so that I have them on Saturday 19th May, since
the Tuesday 15th May release.

Hi there,

just wanted to drop a note that Release Notes needs an
update for the newly added, really beautiful and partly animated
Mageia E17 themes, made by Agust, which can be seen at
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2061
I could do a draft, but i'd prefer if that could be done by someone
who's more used to marketing'ish / advertising writing stuff,
because i totally suck at that.

An important point is that those themes are for now
exclusive to Mageia, and created by a Mageia user, who
recently joined forces with artwork team, IIRC.

Kind Regards

Hi,

Sorry for the slow answer. Thank you very much for excellent feedback.

The official palette would be excellent but as the 'mageia' text uses
the whole palette (text and dot on top of letter 'i') it would actually
mask part of the text nevertheless what palette variant
(http://www.mageia.org/en/charter.html) is used.

Therefore it looks like the official palette is a bit tricky leaving us
with four options to choose from:
1) Leave the bottom background totally off
(http://librestickers.com/mageia/mageia2.png)
2) Add a line and text 'Powered by' that both utilize the official
palette (http://librestickers.com/mageia/mageia.png)
3) Alter the mageia text palette to unofficial
4) Use just some lighter official palette like color

The sticker size is 18mm wide and 26mm high.
The sticker background color is Satin White (matte) which is suitable
for all options listed above.
There is also a chance of using brushed aluminium background sticker
which is very elegant and works nicely with options 1 and 2.
One open question is also that should there be a text TM (unregistered
trademark) following the logo and/or text (as for example Arch Linux
prefers)?

If everything goes as planned these will go for printing by the end of
next week and will be ready for distribution by 20th of May...
Hopefully.

Regards,
             Teemu

P.S. Still planning to visit LinuxTag2012 and bring a stack of these to
Mageia stand plus there will be the 0,10e/sold sticker (from the coming
online shop) to the project (10-14% of the actual selling price)

1 or 2 look good (right colors, good contrast). 3 is not an option.
I'm not sure 4 would bring something better.

Excellent. I know that at least ennael, boklm and obgr will be at LinuxTag.

Thanks.

i don't think anything special is required, the necessary guest drivers and
xen specific stuff should already be in standard kernel/standard install

i would think an install from iso/network should be easily doable and you
won't loose that much time with it...

well, depending on how you usually do this for the VPS offering...

A) you could do a kickstart install depending on parameters

B) or just install once, copy it as a template and whenever needed, you can
copy this image and make the necessary password changes.

Hi there,

just wanted to drop a note that Release Notes needs an
update for the newly added, really beautiful and partly animated
Mageia E17 themes, made by Agust, which can be seen at
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2061
I could do a draft, but i'd prefer if that could be done by someone
who's more used to marketing'ish / advertising writing stuff,
because i totally suck at that.

An important point is that those themes are for now
exclusive to Mageia, and created by a Mageia user, who
recently joined forces with artwork team, IIRC.

PS: I'm not subscribed to the list, so please make sure you
use "Reply to All" function so i'll also get follow-up mails.

Kind Regards
