Hi there,

a quick update.

First. Do we have new meeting time options?

So far, I asked three persons, got one reply (minus the missing
picture :-p ) maybe should I post the full call on -dev or -discuss?

We start with the tech series and the format is the one described in
http://piratepad.net/AX93jcSCTo

We'll probably start to discuss this tomorrow Friday online with obgr
(on #mageia-web, around 14:00 Paris time), then on Tuesday or
Wednesday in Solutions Linux event in Paris, then on Thursday/Friday
with obgr and others in Berlin for LinuxTag. And we will make back an
online summary of that the week after. If anyone already have
design/mockups/anything, bring them in!

And... I was late again. And the original plan I layed out shifted as
well. Anyway, I posted it here:
http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=planning (it's next to unreadable
compared to a spreadsheet, still better than a calendar... should find
another option). Still, it helps to plan a bit in advance and see
where we could go (and what to remove already if we can't make it).

Yes, I read that and understood it to be some kind of "who we are"
page where everybody of the Mageia crowd can show his face - but why
is it called "hugs"? That's what I don't understand. If I'd place my
pic there I don't want to hug anybody, I'd just want to show them what
face hides behind the name in case anybody would ask for it.
May be I don't understand the whole meaning of this.

Sorry - still travelling, so not around for a meeting this week, but
I´m happy to keep Thursday if we can make the time later - say 18:30
UTC or later. I don´t know what other people would like, so I´m
flexible as to day - but not really as to time.

What I missed in this review is the practical side - referring to the
events coming up. They may be not so important in the long run as the
whole discussion about values and targets and hugging places, but
they are needed next week!

 - do we have some kind of marketing there except for the poster and
the t-shirts?
 - what about a presentation running on a screen?
 - what about stickers?
 - what about a CD label to offer along with CDs burned on location?

For Berlin we will have:
 - a large poster
 - t-shirts
 - a presentation (LO Impress) running on a 26" screen
 - CDs to be burned on request (would be nice to have a label
available for download)

That's for a totally different thing. hugs is anecdotal and

It's not so much about "short on material", there's a lot which could
have been done (like nice CD/DVD labels, a nice screen presentation,
graphical flyer layout with a general text to be translated and used
in different countries, etc.

At least these major European events have been known to come for many
months (even listed as milestones in the wiki) and it looks as if I
was the only one asking constantly for these kinds of things (starting
in late February/March). IMHO these practical needs were a bit
neglected because everybody in this section was occupied by
discussions about marketing theories. Sorry to say that, but this is
how it looks in reality.

Pls do not take this so much as critic of the past - to late and
useless to discuss - but rather as a hint for marketing tasks for
future events.

[Mageia-marketing] List of arguments pro Mageia

Evidently, I had thought about some items to go into such a list: there
is a short list at the end of this message - far from exhaustive and a
very personal view, seen from the kind of user I represent.

My items do not cover the ground, but the list should be kept short:
there is need to consider arguments to attract canditate users coming
from windows, maybe also the "hugging" aspect proposed by Romain, but I
do not feel competetent in that domain. Arguments should fit into some
kind of a "template".

I like the examples of graphical competence that pop up everywhere in
Mageia: if such a list is really implemented and is short, how about
adding a kind of line-drawing sketch to the presentation of each
argument (style: the bug that appears/appeared during the install
sequence) - that might help to take away the taste of "oh,
self-promotion" and make people laugh.

Apropos hugging aspect: I do not think that such a list should primarily
address emotional aspects, it should address the potential user who -
and that is at the intellectual level - realizes that there are
alternatives, and starts scratching his head.

--------------

Quality:
Mageia is promising to be as solid and perfect as Mandriva at the best
of its times (Mandriva heritage)

Language support:
Mageia wants to provide a box that perfectly "speaks" many languages -
its structure and its anchor in the user community have already now
produced excellent results (Mandriva heritage + enhancement)

Multi-profile support:
Mageia offers and maintains application that address the needs of a
large variety of user communities - with applications ranging from
game-playing and music-listening to scientific and engineering
applications (Mandriva heritage)

Leading-edge / stability equilibrium:
<text needed to go in here - delicate, it touches the rolling release
discussion>

User <-> maintainer interaction:
<text needed to go in here> (Mageia community concept)

Friendly human side: (quoting Romain)
<text needed to go in here>

Sorry to be so late with my reply - I had not created a filter for
mageia-marketing and thunderbird had put away all your messages as junk (-

I agree to this. But it should be easier to upload your stuff and to get in
touch
of other people while designing the CDEEs.
As a shop worker in seconded handed CDROms for computer software, I figure
out
the design of the CD wallet is very important. It should be designed in a
fashion people know where Mageia is al about. I think a pictorial way of
portraying Mageia is the best solution. I think Ubuntu CD wallets are great
in their choice of color, but not attractive in the sense people see
pictogrammes, pictures or diagrammes. I believe a nice graphical design
would be a great. I have made up some lettres. Perhaps I can get into touch
with some who can help us spread Mageia.

I like to help translate Mageia.

What are the core keypoints or strongholds of the Mageia distribution. I
figure out
during the social media session here in Uden (Netherlands). Social media is
very important, especially Linkedin, Twitter, etcetera. There was a guy, he
talked about TweetDeck. Perhaps such an application should be integrated in
the Mageia distro.
I think Mageia should promote itself by social networks.

Yours faithfully,

Hi there,

during the LinuxTag exhibition in Berlin, Oliver (obgr) and me took
the time to briefly discuss what should be done for the RC and final
release.

For RC, no big change on the Web site: we only remove the red warnings
and replace those with a RC-focused message. I leave it to anyone here
to write this message and submit it for inclusion.

For finale release... We have 15 days left and of course, this is very
short a frame for that. But we can do it focusing on the right thing.

 * NEED: a presentation section on the Web site, showcasing the
product - this section does not exist already, although you will find
equivalents all around the Web. Just look at some product page. Oliver
and me thought of a minimalist, focused layout with ~5 pages:
  - presentation home, main message being, "this is a Linux system for people"
  - focus page for users (what do they have useful for them in this,
what benefits)
  - focus page for developers (same)
  - focus page for contributors (same)
  - focus page for businesses (same)
  - focus page on technical specs, requirements

 * NEED: redesign the download section to which above section will
refer. For this, we need the final list of ISOs that will be provided,
as these influence quite a lot how we will present things.

 * NEED: redesign slightly the home page for the release day and the
following days. What will happen anyway on the home page:
   - project announcement content will be moved to a distinct page,
under the /about section
   - on release day, about only a page-wide home screen picture,
linking to the presentation page will be there + news references
   - on following days, usual news section + contacts will be re-added

 * NEED: message to spread (blog, forum, news sites, etc.) according to audience

 * NICE TO HAVE: a thank you page, for all contributors to this very release
   - needed: someone to mail all project list and collect name of
people that accept to be listed there
   - needed: someone (design) to propose a design to use these names
(default solution will be to have a special page listing everyone)

 * NICE TO HAVE: updated global navigation (top nav bar on www, that
should be spread later to other parts of the website). I know I posted
something about it months ago, but did not finish my mockups about it.
This is of course still open.

 * NICE TO HAVE: redesigned contribution how to page - from
http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=contribute

 * finally, for each of the above things, we need someone in charge;
that means, someone that can take it, deliver a quick prototype,
implement it and provide for inclusion and translation within the
coming 15 days (and coordinate with who is needed for that). We might
post a bug for each of these to assign it to the person in charge.

As for the actual contents (precise info, screenshots), you (the one
taking this bit in charge) have to get in touch with packagers and
collaborate with them.

Additions, comments, advice, takers?

Cheers,

Romain

I won't be online before Thursday afternoon about this.

First thing is that anyone willing to help gets ones hands unto the
mgaonline notifier and see how it behaves from a 2010.1, 2010.2
Mandriva release (do this in a VM or on a machine with a backup, at
this point).

Second thing is to design a 1/2/3/4 story to guide a user into this
process (from downloading/installing this new mgaonline package, down
to actually upgrading the system).

If you need help about setting this up, please ask on -dev

[Mageia-marketing] Tasks for Mageia 1 release, marketing/artwork

 Patricia Fraser + trish at thefrasers.org +
 Tue May 17 20:42:41 CEST 2011 +

 +
Hi all,

Here's the promised update to the task list. This list is also going
up on the wiki here:

http://www.mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=marketing#what_s_hot_current_work

Please check it, and let us know what you can take on. I've put my
name against some of the things, but since we only have about 2 weeks
to complete this stuff, the more people pitch in, the better.

Numero Uno, absolutely must be done:

 - Build a visual brand for Mageia

This means: nail down a colour palette (even if it's an interim one)
and bring the artwork/design of the install and the distro (all the
mageia-specific parts), the website and any posters/kakemoni/whatever
into line with each other as far as possible. We can certainly
achieve this in 2 weeks if we jump all over it.

The artwork team is on board with a fair bit of this - what we need
now is more eyes, to look at the suggestions and weigh in with
*constructive* criticism - "I don't like it" isn't helpful, any more
than "It doesn't work"; we need to know what to do about it. Is it
the balance of the design that needs changing? To what? Is it the
colours that aren't appealing? What would look better? What does
work? Why?

Remember: we need to be *visible*, we need to be *identifiable* in
the great distro maelstrom, and we need to express who we are as well
as possible. Are we edgy? Comfortable? Out there? welcoming? chintzy?
the community decides, and that's you, so speak up.

Who: I'm running with this one for the present, but please take a look
as we progress.

Next, absolutely must be done, from Romain's list:

1: A presentation section on the Web site, showcasing the product.

The suggestion at present is that we have a minimalist, focused
layout with around 5 sub-pages linked from the presentation page:
  - presentation home, main message being, "this is a Linux system
   for people"
  - focus page for users (what do they have useful for them in this,
what benefits)
  - focus page for developers (same)
  - focus page for contributors (same)
  - focus page for businesses (same)
  - focus page on technical specs, requirements

We need to get input from the devs and other contributors on what the
benefits are for them; and we need to get hold of the specs and
requirements for that page.

Who: not assigned yet.

Who: unassigned at the moment. Anyone up to help with this?

2: Redesign the download section (to which the section above will
refer).

For this, we need the final list of ISOs that will be provided, as
these influence quite a lot how we will present things. However, we
can do quite a lot of design with placeholders, so that isn't a
requirement to get started.

We need this to be ready early so the i18n teams can do their thing.
Ideally we want the EN text finalised by 25-05-11 - that's 8 days
away.

Who: not assigned yet.

3: Redesign the home page of mageia.org - special look for release
day and a few days afterwards.

What will happen anyway on the home page:
   - project announcement content will be moved to a distinct page,
under the /about section
   - on release day, about only a page-wide home screen picture,
linking to the presentation page will be there + news references
   - on following days, usual news section + contacts will be re-added

This will be mostly artwork/design, with not a whole lot of text, so
the marcomm part should be quick. Hopefully we'll have something by
way of a design coming out of Task Numero Uno (visual brand - I know
it's a ways up 8-)), in plenty of time for the text to be added.

We need this to be ready early so the i18n teams can do their thing.
Ideally we want the EN text finalised by 26-05-11 - that's 9 days
away.

Who: not assigned yet.

4: The message to spread (blog, forum, news sites, etc.) -
varieties according to audience.

Again we need to have this ready early so the i18n teams can do their
thing. This needs to be ready earlier than any other text, and it's
the most writing; if we could please all jump on this and have
something ready by 23-05, that would be great.

Who: not assigned yet.

5. A thank you page, for all contributors to this very release

(This is very important - our community works hard and makes good
stuff, and by damn a pat on the back is deserved!)

   - needed: someone to mail all project list and collect name of
people that accept to be listed there
   - needed: someone (design) to propose a design to use these names
(default solution will be to have a special page listing everyone)

A Thanks page linked from the presentation page in #1 and from the
Release Day front page will work fine, if we get the design right.

Who: not assigned yet.

 * NICE TO HAVE: updated global navigation (top nav bar on www, that
should be spread later to other parts of the website). I know I posted
something about it months ago, but did not finish my mockups about it.
This is of course still open.

If we have time - let's take a look at this.

 * NICE TO HAVE: redesigned contribution how to page - from
http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=contribute

Again - if we have time.

Any unassigned tasks, I'll work on as they come up, but we need
contributors - now's your chance to have your words and ideas
immortalised!

Cheers,

[Mageia-marketing] [Mageia-artwork] proposal for installer screens

 +
(sorry, didn't reply to both lists)

Hi there,

thanks Marcello - and Patricia, for your proposals.

I'm going to comment both and add three things that would need to be
in these info screens (to add); then, both proposals could be merged,
somehow. Articulation of types of people with the platform benefits:
 * (addition) screen: a "before we start, thank you for
installing/using Mageia" screen toward the user
 * (add.) screen: a "this is the result of people work, time and
donations" type-of screen - we won't have the "thank you" page
directed to contributors (at least, not in the way we expected at
first) but we need some kind of dedicated mention there (who did this
and how)
 * Mageia is a system for people, who stay in control (nothing hidden,
privacy concerns, free software, huge library of software)
 * for businesses: servers, desktops, appliances; secure, stable,
large community support;
 * for developers: full of technologies and tools to build desktop,
server and Web applications;
 * for contributors: it's a community-driven, Open Source project
involved many different disciplines!
 * for you: you tell us what you make with this and how we can make it
better suit you
 * (last screen, add.) a "we hope Mageia will help you to put some
magic in your life" or something along this line that "turns the
table" to the person in front of her device.

I wouldn't focus on the "no price" bit as it leads to the "no value"
one too easily (furthermore, there _is_ a price to pay, if only in
attention/focus on "what is an operating system" and how to install
it). Ah. And we have no "brainstorming" place yet - so better not
mention it.

A last remark, regarding your proposal Marcello, where you use Mageia
as an adjective. As a name/brand, Mageia (and Linux too, btw) is
"something", a name, not a verb/action, neither an adjective - and
should thus not be used like this (and not encouraged to be used as
such).

Why? Not necessarily because that's bad (some people tend to think
this, although that's as well a sign of recognition), but because
being an adjective or a verb, it makes it something describing
something specific (a status or an action).

Mageia is project and a versatile product and a community - that's
already too much for a single name (and we will have time to fix that
later) - but that's precisely something too big (and too young) to
push it toward a status or an action. So, no "Be Mageia" please. :-)

But again, I am afraid we may be quite late here in that I'm not sure
if we will find time to artwork to produce something there before the
end of this week. Nonetheless, this work will still be valid for
further releases :-p

Who takes it further?

In case you missed it, macxi has done a very nice poster which shows

And the best of it all: he did all the text in inkscape, so with the

Hi there!

here are the specifications:

Format: png 4/3 and 16/9

Screens are needed of:
- boot screen
- login screen
- desktop (empty) for KDE, GNOME and
- anything else you find interesting for future Mageia users.

It would be great if you could put them online somewhere (picasa,
flickr,...) and send us the links to the mailing lists.

Waiting for them desparately in the remaining days until release,

Checking it out and thinking about it while doing some Web stuff.

This list is cool and can be put in the release pages but it does not
exactly, precisely cover this question: what discrete stuff is
different with this Mageia 1 distribution? (as in: what's in it that
there's not in an other distribution?); technical/tool/experience.

If the answer is: nothing, then, what is different with the project?
Or still why chooose it? (that can be the Mageia promise, but that's
more difficult to push). It's not to have only these exclusive bits
showing up on the product page; but it's to have them nonetheless +
all the rest.

Well, what does Mageia have what others do not have?

1. Technically, nothing. We could just copy the Mandriva marketing
phrases about excellent hardware recognition, ease of use, draktools,
etc.

2. Looks: well, pls artwork-team, don't take it personally, but the
look is the very last item I would use to advertize the product. It is
a technical product, which should be described by its technical
features, not by its looks (everybody can make Ubuntu look like Mageia
and vice versa). Back to #1.

What we have other than most distributions in our area: the fact that
it is community based with all related implications. The organisation,
the fact that no commercial management can dictate the way Mageia will
take - the opportunity for the user to be more integrated in the
future of this distribution than anywhere else.

Of course this will only get the attention of people who care for
these points. Others, like those who buy their car on the color of the
carpeting, must be attracted by nice artwork. So, here we really have
the difference between targets.

Hi,

That's just what I need! a good solid shove on a Monday! 8-)

> a) How can we make this compare to:
> - Debian
> - FreeBSD

Balance? The personal is equally important with the technical?

(Debian prides themselves on being merit-driven, but they manage to
be very exclusive - otherwise why would there be a need for
Debian-Women...)

Openness to contribution (maybe not so much)?

Responsibility? We're all responsible for making it good?

> b) How can we make this a clear benefit?

I'd have a go if I understood better. What was the motivation of the
Founders, aside from wriggling out from under corporate governance?
What did they see in the future?

> c) And how can we make this an obvious benefit for:
>  - an existing Linux user;
> - a non-Linux user?

For a non-Linux user, the welcome part will do it - just like it did
for Ubuntu. "You're important to us".

8-) For an existing Linux user, it might be "You're important to us,
so long as you're willing to unlearn some bad habits."

Feedback/input needed!

we can pute the focus on KDE and on our openess to the new technologies

>  - an existing Linux user;

our attitidues are:

- openess to new ideas
- listen to the users
- get the maximum from kde4.

all the distros do (in part) these tasks, but we have to communicate better
then them our strenghts

> - a non-Linux user?

for a non-linux user we don't have to compare distros, we only have to show
our apps and tools... we must show amarok, k3b, dolphin, plasma, nepomuk and
so on... we must show them at the work, as non-linux users ignore completely
what apps do we use and how powerful are them

Hi there!

Webteam desperately needs some help from you!

What we do need is some screenshots from Mageia, to be more exactly
here are the specifications:

Format: png 4/3 and 16/9

Screens are needed of:
- boot screen
- login screen
- desktop (empty) for KDE, GNOME and
- anything else you find interesting for future Mageia users.

It would be great if you could put them online somewhere (picasa,
flickr,...) and send us the links to the mailing lists.

Waiting for them desparately in the remaining days until release,

Oliver
