Hello, my name is Bruno Alano Medina and I love opensource code. Initially I
was looking for a distribution for me to develop my code in a simple, fast,
easy, stable and new linux distro. I thought the project *Mageia *and I was
very happy to see the ideology, however, I was sad to see are few contributors

I love Linux, and mainly involved in projects. So I want to contribute with my
knowledge of Portuguese (Brazil). I've lived four years in the U.S. and also
have an excellent knowledge of English.

Currently I program in C/C++.

[Mageia-i18n] [proposition] Using Translate extension on Mageia wiki

 +
Hi,

As it was announced by Oliver Burger at the i18n-meeting, shiny new Mageia
will soon be opened for translation.

I just wanted to propose to use Translate extension on it. It is now
successfully used on KDE UserBase:
http://userbase.kde.org/Welcome_to_KDE_UserBase and TechBase

Advantages of this extension as well as the contact information of authors
can be found here:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate

This extension can significantly ease up maintenance of the translations
with no additional efforts to sync translations with original (automatic
synchronization).

Hope that it can be added to Mageia wiki.

Best regards,
Yuri

So where are the EN .po files so the English strings can be properly fixed?

There's a continuing problem where EN strings contain incorrect plurals as well
as other textual errors throughout the distribution. This is carry-over from
Mandrake/Mandriva days and it's always been very obvious to native-speakers.

If the base language of the distribution is to be EN AND the developer is not a
native speaker then it seems negligent that the master .po file is not checked.

Those strings don't have to be fixed just in the po files but in the code

Some developer code then fix it in the code.

Hello i18n team,

my name is László Köröskényi (registered with the username
fasterk1cker), and I wish to contribute as a translator - from English
to my native Hungarian. While I have translated before a (very) little
bit on Lauchpad and much more other texts (RPGs, actually) for fun, I
consider myself as a total newbie, so wish me luck :)

About me: I am male, almost 30 years old, and I am living in the
eastern part of Hungary. I am currently employed by a Danish
international company, where I am working in the QA department. I like
cats, books, martial arts, while I hate unexpected loud noises and
eggs.

Maybe worths some words why I have noticed Mageia. I read about it on
Distrowatch, and I am very happy about it. My first encounter with
Linux was a Mandrake Move CD, and it was cool, but (especially after
transforming to Mandriva) I did not like the business view behind. And
now Mageia is here, distant relative and successor of my first Linux,
but free, what I really like.

I am looking forward to work with you all,

regards:

Hi László and welcome aboard!

I added you to the mga-i18n group with the username fasterk1cker, so
you should now be able to connect on our Transifex instance.
I created a Hungarian team in the "Mageia i18n teams" project on
Transifex. This is a fake project which enables us to reuse the same
teams for all project (i.e. if a team is registered in the "Mageia
i18n teams" project, it can work on every project we have on
Transifex).

So, as said in a previous mail, you should now be able to import .po
files from Mageia's SVN to Transifex. These are cleaned .po files we
imported from Mandriva's SVN when we forked the distribution, so
please use them, it will save you much time.

As I understand it, it gives translation progress stats between
locales and allows to translate chunks by chunks (so it's a 1-1
translation, with less freedom for a given locale to do things a bit
differently - for good and for bad).

> As I said in last i18n meeting as well as in doc team, I'd like to keep the
> more important things like
> - really important documentation
> - errata
> - information about the project

> in sync.

That's clearly a nice feat; does it do it really with this extension?
Couldn't this be done as well with a watchdog script on a given set of
defined pages, which reports is fed into i18n web page or ml? (or even
use mediawiki page watch feature directly).

> But I do see fields in which a dezentralization is important as well,
> e.g. planning an event can be done very nicely using a wiki (like we did for
> FOSDEM 2011 or MandrivaUser.de does for some time.

Well, decoupling is not always best, but it helps

Here are issues I see with the extensions:
 - non-localized URLs (instead of w.m.o/en/Home and w.m.o/fr/Accueil
(ie, localized title _in_ the URL), we would have w.m.o/Home and
w.m.o/Home/fr (English title in the URL); that's not blocking, but
that's not so good either;
 - inconsistent navigation in a chosen locale (tested on the KDE Userbase wiki):
   - my browser accepts French as a primary language, so content is
returned to me in French;
   - I decide to look at the Spanish version of a page; fine, it
works; my intent is to navigate the Spanish-speaking pages now;
   - clicking on another wiki link will forward me to the default URL,
that will be rewritten in French => back to French, where I would have
expected Spanish;
   - right, digging into this, this is because those links are
prefixed such as: "Special:myLanguage/Applications" which rewrites to
Applications/fr
 - we didn't plan to setup the wiki that way *, and that's a
significant change, so either that is really important for you and it
has to be considered _now_, or it can be done differently with the
planned wiki setup.

* expected wiki setup is:
... and so on, with locale aware interwiki links (the way Wikipedia
does it). It certainly has drawbacks too. But the point is that things
get done in the end.

If it is planned to have just several static pages which will be
translatable (no changes, one time translation, announcement for every new
translatable pages) the old approach is good enough. But I have an
impression that this is not the case.

The old-style translation process [1], [2] implies one of the following
options:

1. Translator just copy and paste the content from the original page and
translate it (inter-wiki links will be established by the bot)
2. Translator should make some modification of the original page to make
the translation visible then copy the content and translate it

There are several shortcomings in this approach:

1. It is hard to find all the pages that are worth translating (the list
should be maintained manually)
2. It is easy to begin the translation of incomplete pages under
construction or outdated pages
3. It is not easy to begin translation [1], [2]
4. It is hard to track the changes (you should subscribe on the page feed
or add it to the watch list to get notified)
5. It is hard to maintain the translation (usually you should guess about
the part of the translation to be changed in view of the original changes)
6. It is hard to know that the translation is outdated
7. It is hard to keep the coherence of the core documentation (isn't it be
good to have manuals on distribution collected on install CD with major
translations converted from wiki and 100% coherent?)

Translate extension allows to avoid these problems:

1. All translatable pages are collected in one list (e.g. [3]).
2. Every team can have its own untranslatable pages (e.g. [4]). All pages
are separated by the team domains (/<language_code>, e.g. "/fr") and team
categories.
3. Pages can be added or removed from translation by the wiki admins.
Translation of the pages, which are not marked for translation is
prohibited.
4. To begin translation just register, ask to be added to the translators
group and push "Translate the page" or the corresponding link in the list
of pages.
5. Changes are tracked automatically. The extension shows the changes in
every module with colors.
6. Automatic maintenance of the translations. All unchanged parts are
kept, all changed are marked as fuzzy.
7. Every outdated block is marked with red (e.g. [5]).
8. As all the complete translations are semantically same (extension has
its own embedded QA) they can be exported as docbook with localized
screenshots in docbook format (e.g. [6]). Docbook can be easily converted
to html, pdf, etc.

It would nice to have a utility that maintains a database of
corresponding changes, where each l10n signs off on entries. With some
way of signalling languages to be translated. (Say "all", or a selected
list.)
If for whatever reason translating a change is not wanted, that could be
flagged.
So a wiki entry concerning an event in Barcelona written in Catalan
could be translated only to Spanish, and maybe French.
And the database would keep track of translations to be done.

I like the planned setup. The difficulty of keeping things in sync can
be minimized with some sort of watch script. In any case, keeping l10ns
in sync requires real translators with or without this extension.
Remember that the wiki changes gradually over time. It is not as though

Nor are there release dates for the wiki, where all translations _must_

Just for the record, as it seems that proposition is rejected, that is exactly what UserBase (it is completely different tweak) do. It uses UA to display pages in user locale language if it exists. If the translation does not exist UserBase does not show empty page (like the planned Mageia setup) but the page in English (no links tweaking on translator side needed). Surely, it is inconvenient if you want to read pages in Spanish in French-localized browser, but that's the different story... ;)

Hello,

Is it a troll to speak about the wiki ?
I ear about the no-temporary wiki for many month. I stop to make plan

Currently, I'm in the french translator team and I just wait the new
multi-language wiki because I know we will have a lot of work for
translating everything. I don't care of the technical choices because
I don't have enough time for helping to install and manage the new

will take the goods decisions and will tell us when it's time to
translate. I hope they will create a tutorial for telling us how to
use this new wiki in a good way.

Of course the wiki is long delayed, too long to be honest.
But I am a bit astonished by your words. I strongly disapprove of
crticising those people doing all of the work (the sysadmins here),

I am sure, they do, but it doesn't help in taking the decision. Of
course I do know, that most people can't really help in installing and
managing the new wiki. But if they are going to have to work with it,
they are the people who can give feedback on how they do think, it

Hi out there,

as the soft svn repo has been branched, I am now creating branches of
our translations to mirror image the svn. So we are able to provide
fixes to translations for Mga1 as well as working on cauldron.

I am doing this by creating new resources inside the existing projects
on transifex. Those follow the naming schema of "1_resource-name".
Please don't do any work on those new resources until I tell you, I'm
finished with this.

Cheers,

Hello,

The new Mageia 2 planning has been posted on blog:
http://blog.mageia.org/en/2011/07/17/mageia-2-release-cycle-support-and-planning/

As a translator, I noticed these two dates first:
Development String freeze: 2012 Mar. 7
i18n freeze: 2012 Mar. 10

Does string freeze mean no more new strings added in svn/transifex,
and i18n freeze means translation deadline? Please correct me if I'm
wrong, because 3 days is a little too short for us - would it better
be 3 weeks (that still depends if developers change or fix string
typos or add missing strings after string freeze).

Thanks,

Yes, development string freeze means no new strings are added, i18n
freeze means translation deadline.
And in my opinion, three days is ok. After all I don't expect so much
string changes. If we keep up to date on the translations before,
there shouldn't be more then about ten strings to do in those three
days, which after all should be possible.

Oliver, I think you may have read too much into this. I understood it as

That is, no one is criticised... but the translation team needs to have
the wiki up and running before we can do much with it.

For the record, I do think it is good that we discuss needed and wanted
functionalities before putting the new wiki into production.

Cheers,

Hi papoteur!

Thanks for joining us and welcome aboard!
I added your Mageia account to the mga-i18n group so that you can

I still have to add you to the French translation team on Transifex,
but it seems that I can't do so for the moment (Tx doesn't seem to
know you yet – could you try to login to transifex.mageia.org with

Since you are now part of the French translation team, it would be
nice if you could also join the i18n-fr mailing list, using this link
and your Mageia account: https://ml.mageia.org/l/info/i18n-fr
This is our main means of internal communication (we use it for
general discussion and to coordinate the translation of blog posts).
You can also find us on the IRC channel #mageia-i18n-fr on Freenode.

----- Translation of German mail -----
Hello,

I am French and my name is Régis (login : rgx). I'm working and living in
Germany for 9 years now.

I am using GNU/Linux for some years. And now Mageia which I find superb.
I have invested quite some time for RMLL 2011 in Strasbourg where I was team
leader of the "Accueil" and "Repas du Libre" teams. I also translated a large
part of the rmll website from french into English.
This was a nice experience and I got interested in further doing things in the
Linux world., But how?

At work I am translating user manuals from French into German and vice versa,
in addition I am working as an engineer.
So I thought I could become a translator for "my" distribution.

I want to invest some of my time into Mageia. To add my knowledge to the
community and use more and more Open Source software in my systems.

Yours,

Rgx.

Hi Régis, and thanks Oliver for the translation.

Can I infer that you are willing to contribute to both the German and
French translation teams? We would be glad to welcome you in both
teams, but remember: the French team must always prevail, especially
when it comes to translating blog posts quickly. (Okay, just kidding,
this was a private joke for Oliver).

I added your Mageia account to mga-i18n group (it should enable you to
connect to our translation services, i.e. for the moment
transifex.mageia.org). Could you try to log into Transifex once? Then
we should be able to add you to the German and French translation
teams there, so that you can work on software translations (even
though I think both teams have translated the software 100%, but more
may arrive or some strings may change).

As Oliver told you, you can join the mailing lists i18n-de and
i18n-fr, on which you can speak respectively German and French. These
lists are used for internal communication, while the mageia-i18n list
is used for general communication (important information, general

Hi Régis, and thanks Oliver for the translation.

Can I infer that you are willing to contribute to both the German and French translation teams? We would be glad to welcome you in both teams, but remember: the French team must always prevail, especially when it comes to translating blog posts quickly. (Okay, just kidding, this was a private joke for Oliver).

I added your Mageia account to mga-i18n group (it should enable you to connect to our translation services, i.e. for the moment transifex.mageia.org). Could you try to log into Transifex once? Then we should be able to add you to the German and French translation teams there, so that you can work on software translations (even though I think both teams have translated the software 100%, but more may arrive or some strings may change).

As Oliver told you, you can join the mailing lists i18n-de and i18n-fr, on which you can speak respectively German and French. These lists are used for internal communication, while the mageia-i18n list is used for general communication (important information, general discussions that concern all i18n-xy teams).

Hello, Oliver and Remi :-)

Nice to meet you...i´m ready for translate software :-) but i have to learn how is the transifex system working and how can i manage the .pot files ?

The Mageia project is great, and i´m very happy to start contribute in it.

Now, what can i do ? Please can you guide me a little bit to start my contribution...

Of course this is a very minor "bug" by itself. But (as Remco already pointed
out) seeing such a small thing not being fixed for months gives a wrong
impression to people who evaluate the distribution not only by the looks and
the number of packages but also by the bug fixing performance.

What kind of risk is an update if the only change is a typo in the translation
of a menue item? As much as I agree to the rather safe approach of Mageia wrt
updates, this is a bit too "careful", IMHO.

May I also point out that we got feedback from people who think there are too
much updates? Forcing an update to all Mageia users just for a typo in German
translations would be too much, in my opinion.

That's why I think we must try to group several bug fixes into a single update,
whenever possible. It saves work for everybody involved (issueing an update
needs work from several people, it's not just "fix and push") and makes less
updates to download for users.

That's why I proposed that we fix it, but wait for the next update of rpmdrake
(I'm sure there are open bugs that can deserve an update) to push it.
