[Mageia-discuss] Booting into safe mode -- not working

I was in the process of working out problems with a friend of mine who
had trouble with her config files and I wanted to boot into "safe mode"
to walk her through "drakconf".

When I tried to boot into safe mode it stopped at "Failed to issue
method call: Transaction is destructive". My box still boots fine into
regular mode but won't in safe mode. What is curious also, is that I
have another box that I am repairing for someone and it does the same
thing, it won't boot into safe mode. However, I tried it on laptop and
it does boot into safe mode. Weird.

Anyway, any ideas on how I could get safe mode to work properly again? I
took a camera shot of the monitor and the output on the last page of
booting up into safe mode where it died[1].

NOTE: all systems are running Mageia2

Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the note.

This is really not what I am experiencing, although perhaps having
shared folders may be the cause of the problem. I don't imagine that if
my system were not to be able to boot in normal mode that I would have
the tools on me to fix the problem as I would be unable to boot into any
safe mode.

Our Mageia2 systems should be able to boot, at the very least, into safe
mode, regardless of any prior configurations. I have 2 boxes where
booting in safe mode is not possible.

Cheers,

Marc

That update (or possible something else?) fixed the problem for me

Maybe the issue was not understood

/var/spool/mail/anne is the address of your local mailbox for user
anne. Your mauilbox for Thuunderbird will be somewhere else. For
example, I download mail into /var/spool/mail/doug, and my email client
(kmail, currently claws-mail) moves it to the client's mailbox. If you
are downloading mail diectly from the Internet with Thunderbird, you

I cant say what under .thunderbird is the same on you install. In the
folder Mail I have four subfolders and one of this has the name as the
Server name in the Server-adjustment for the POP-Server. Here I found

I don't have this problem. I use postfix to deliver system mails to
/var/spool/mail/jim. (I don't use it for any other purpose.) Thunderbird
collects those and stores them in
~/.thunderbird/xxx.default/Mail/localhost/inbox (where xxx is an

The process is the same on both my Mageia2 and cauldron installations.

That error message suggests to me that there is something about the file
in /var/spool/mail/anne that is not what thunderbird expects, but I've
no idea what that might be. The only thought I have is that for some
reason that file is read only instead of read/write.

to /var/spool/mail/user. If Anne is downloading her mail directly via
POP, /var/spool/mail/anne will never be used. Kmail is like that. In

If indeed Anne is using POP or IMAP to collect "local" mail then I don't
think she needs to configure a Unix Movemail account in thunderbird. I
believe it is that account that is looking at /var/spool/mail/anne.
Perhaps she has such an account on Mageia 2 but not in cauldron, which
would explain why she does not see the error messages on cauldron.

That makes sense, yes. I had assumed that it was talking about system

I am using IMAP - not Disconnected IMAP - IOW, I don't store mail

All the same, I'll give it some thought.

Hi Anne,

So, if you use imap locally, as it sounds like you do, then Thunderbird
has no place in even trying to touch /var/spool/mail/anne . In this case,
if /var/spool/mail/anne is seperate from your regular mail account, I
think you may want to tell dovecot about it so it can serve it over imap
to thunderbird. Having postfix, dovecot, and thunderbird all trying to
access /var/spool/mail/anne and even attempting locks on it might give all
sort of issues.

Hi, Remmy. No, the IMAP server is on a different box. This laptop is
pure client.

It's odd, but I may have solved the problem. That said, I still don't
understand why. During the time I've been trying to solve this, I
have made two changes. First I added a newline character in
/var/spool/mail/anne - this seems to have disappeared, so I doubt if
that was the reason. The other change was to make the ownership
anne:mail. Maybe that helped? I don't know.

I tried Frank's strace suggestion - and saw practically nothing
(Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module"), so I tried
logging out and in, and restarting, to see if the problem was
triggered by first-time use in either of these situations, but I
didn't get the message on either occasion. Perhaps it's cured.

Well, glad to hear it is solved! I have the feeling the permissions /

Me either. "Local" mail, the mail that collects in /var/spool/mail, is
often generated by the system. I have 3 user accounts (one for a user
that no longer exists.) Postfix was installed because something
else needs it, and has a mailbox as well. At the moment postfix has 500
KB in it, which will all be system messages that I don't worry about.
The others are all empty. My doug account was cleaned out when I read
mail with Claws.

If you have a mail server on your computer, that collects mail from the
Web and distributes it to users on your network, it will be placed
initially in /var/spool/mail/xxxx. I use getmail to put it there then
run it through dspam, to filter out the spam. Before then, I just
downloaded my mail by POP straight into ~/.kde4/kmail/mail. You will
be doing much the same. IMAP seems to use dovecot or similar, but I
know nothing about it. My ISP supports IMAP, but I don't need it. It
seems to have value only for people who get their mail at different
locations.

I suppose that if you are like me, you have run through your Thunderbird
config a dozen times. I am inclined to copy the working config
you have on the notebook, but others tell me it is bad practice. You
need to tell Thunderbird to collect mail from your ISP, but your
problem seems to have something to do with permissions. It should be
able to read your "anne" mailbox in the spool and truncate it, because
it should be owned by user anne and group mail, but for a simple POP
account, it should be looking at one of the files in
 /home/anne/.thunderbird/4upsp8fe.default/Mail/Local Folders/ You
could try running "locate -i Inbox" to find out where your Inbox is.

The other thought is that the 4upsp8fe.default is a user directory as
with Mozilla. Is there another one alongside it? Thunderbird may be
looking at the wrong one?

You can redirect system mail, like my 500K in Postfix, to go to your
user account. I simply trust the system.

Since I haven't used Thunderbird for a long time, I can't offer any
specific help.

Doug.

The answer from Jim is the essential thing - no need to mess around with
/var/spool/mailo/anne - Thunderbird can do all this for you, you just
need to create an additional Thunderbird account of type "Movemail". But
it may appear somewhat devious to do this, Thunderbird playing
hide-and-seek with you:

Try to come to the "Account actions" tab in Thunderbird and, there, hit
the "Add other accounts" button. That gives you a radio button, one of
its choices beeing "Unix Mailspool (Movemail)". Once you are there, you
should be on safe ground to create the special Thunderbird "Movemail"
account (what Thunderbird calls an "account") that collects mail from
the Unix /var/spool/mail/anne.

Where Thunderbird stores the local folders for this account is a totally
independant issue, to set this up you proceed just as for ordinary
thunderbird accounts.

I use such an account all the time to collect the messages created
locally, for instance by msec - works great.

I thought you had posted earlier that you changed the ownership to
anne:mail and that didn't help ? That is the correct ownership.

If you're using IMAP through TB, your mail folders will be under
$HOME/.thunderbird/xxx.default/ImapMail/servername. The problem you
describe with /var/spool/mail/anne can only occur if your MTA (postfix)
doesn't have write authority to that file. In fact, I notice on my
system that my /var/spool/mail/ftg file has ownership ftg:mail, but the
permissions are only rw-------, so I guess postfix must be assuming an
euid of the recipient before trying to write to the file, i. e. the
group shouldn't matter.

In any case, if you can do
     mail anne
     Subject: Test
     line 1
     CTRL-D

and it gets through to /var/spool/mail/anne, then it's working. If it's
not, try renaimng the file as root, rerun the test, and see what gets
created for that file.

If you still see the message, try to identify what's issuing it. It's
possible that if TB somehow got hooked up with that file, it may be
trying to auto-compact it or something.

My only other thought was to create a new profile. I have done this
with Mozilla. The procedure for Thunderbird should be much the same,
and will be on the Thunderbird page at mozilla.org. It should get rid
of any permission problems. Since you may have it solved anyway, you
probably don't need to take that step.
