Different problem. Grub 1 can not be expected to know about
Grub 2. Grub 2 should know how to handle a Grub 1 system, but
doesn't.

There are many many ways to get around this, so many that it
gets confusing sorting out which method to choose. One of the
more explainable methods is to make a habit of installing
systems with boot loaders in their own root partition rather
than in the mbr. Then you are left with the comparatively
simple problem of having something in the mbr be able to find
all of the other boot loaders.

eg. Starting with one distibution on your system, let's call
it A, with a boot loader in the mbr. Install distribution B
with its own boot loader in its own root partion. Reconfigure
A's boot loader so that it can chain B's boot loader. Next
time you reboot you should see A's Lilo/Grub1/Grub2 screen
with a menu item for B (plus all of the original A options)
select B and then you should see a second boot loader, for B.

You might need to look up "chain".

In Lilo you want something like:

other=/dev/sda11
        label="sda11_test"
        optional

In Grub 1 you want something like:

title m1_grub
root (hd0,8)
chainloader +1

You might get what you want by using Mageia's Control Center
and selecting "Other" operating systems - assuming that the
other installations already have a boot loader in their
respective root directories.

The docs for GRUB 2 say to chainload. If you install Mandriva then
Ubuntu, the Ubuntu bootloader, will be in your MBR and useable. You can
then customise it to boot into Mageia by default. Perhaps not the
desired outcome.

There is a full tutorial in a series I have found very good on other
topics, although I haven't looked at this one, at
http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/grub-2.html

It covers additional topics, like theming your Grub2 menu (perhaps make
it look as though it is Mageia?)

FWIW,

Doug.

Hi all

Some of you may be aware of the current shortage of contributors in QA.
Since the release of Mageia 2 our workload has doubled and we are
struggling to stay on top of it.

I'd like to appeal to you all, if you can find some time, to consider
joining the QA team and helping to make Mageia!

You don't have to be a guru to do useful QA so it is a good way for
people of all experience levels to contribute to the community. We are
all ages and from all over the world, united by a common cause.

We have a documented procedure to follow and are more than willing to
offer some informal mentoring until you feel comfortable with what you
are doing. We have people of all abilities and it is a welcoming and
friendly, albeit small, team - so please don't be shy or think your
contribution would be meaningless. We need all the help we can get!

As you may know, the long rumoured backport medias will be opening
before too long (hopefully!) and it will be our job in QA to test
backported packages then, aswell as the regular updates. If you like to
test new stuff before it is released or like to learn about old stuff
you maybe never knew existed before then QA is definitely for you.

We want to ensure updates are processed in a timely fashion but our
backlog is growing longer at the moment instead of shorter. So Please,
if you would like to help, take a moment and read our wiki pages. There
is a wealth of information there. If you do decide to join then please
say Hi on the qa-discuss mailing list or on IRC, we'd be very grateful
and glad to see you!

Wiki: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/QA_Team
IRC: #mageia-qa on irc.freenode.net

We will be holding regular meetings now on the IRC channel on Thursdays
at 19UTC. You are more than welcome to come and join in.

If you need any more info or guidance then please don't hesitate to ask
either on list or off.

Hope to see you soon!

My laptop has the usual tinny sound system, so I bought a Creative
X-Fi USB 5.1 gadget. Some time back, Coling helped me to get that
working, and that is what I normally use for music. However, I can't
get the audio in/output sockets to work, so I can't use that for a
Hangout.

My problem is the number of places that seem related to sound issues.
I normally test the speaker setup in System Settings when using the
USB setup. However, if I need to use the internal audio sockets I
have to switch back to the Intel HDA card. This is where I come
unstuck. No matter what I do I can't get sound out, although after a
lot of experimentation I have managed to hear others speak.

Aslamixergui simply shows the PulseAudio channel - so no adjustment is
possible there. Alsamixer on Konsole shows that channel by default.
Pulling up the Intel channel I can set everything, including mic gain,
to a relatively high setting. The X-Fi channel says that no
adjustment is possible.

It's possible that there is a microphone problem, but I've tried both
a stand-along mic and a headset, so I'm inclined to rule that out.

What have I missed? The ideal would be to have everything working on
the X-Fi, but anything at all that can work will be an improvement :-)

[Mageia-discuss] Blogdrake repository for mageia 2 ready

 Gonzalo Igartua + gigartua at gmail.com +

 +
Hello,
We have finished testing in BDK repository for Mageia 2.

To add just visit this link
http://blogdrake.net/blog/drakedalfa/blogdrake

or using the tool GetRepoDrake (can be used in different languages clicking
top right corner)

http://ftp.blogdrake.net/RPMS/GetRepoDrake/

We never had taken so much time and work to prepare our repo, like at this
time. We have reached a number of packages unthinkable 3 years ago when we
began this adventure.
>From my personal point of view, I am pleased to tell you that the vast
majority of people BDK packagers team has been supporting for different
tasks or ideas and has been very rewarding to work together this time.

I must say that now the idea is move all packages as possible to mageia
official repos , before mageia 3 release .We are working with this now.It
is not our intention be a indispensable repository, just to have a
learning platform for future packagers for mandriva / mageia Spanish
speakers.

I want to thank all who have put their two cents, packaging, managing
server, or testing from the Blogdrake forum.

Enjoy it !!!

Is this just a KDE thing? My context menus in pcmanfm under LXDE are
similar looking, if not an exact match. I do not get the "Extract
here, Autodetect subfolder" option, although that is exactly(?) what
happens when I use "Extract here". My "Extract to..." option also
works as expected, though I am having difficulties with "Compress...".

Could it be something to do with the underlying archiver program. My
desktop appears to use Xarchiver.
