+Just in case did you check that akonadi was running/responding ?
+Somehow kadressbook & kmail should have prompted about non running akonadi.

+I'm currently waiting for Qt validation by QA to push KDE 4.8.4 [1] on 
+updates/testing  (which came with a lot of fix for kdepim, some of them picked 
+up from 4.8.5). 
+However it's also possible that i'll simply push 4.8.5 since 4.8.5 should be 
+release (or at least tagged) by the end of July.
