Bonjour André et al:

I installed lshw and here is the output (below). I lists my TVcard and
USWebcam correctly but when I reboot Mageia and try to turn my TVTime
player on the video0 or video1 is still confused. I wonder if this is a
bug. It would be nice if someone else with a TVCard could confirm.

Actually, I just went back to the Mandriva site to look this up again on

I was just reviewing my old Mandriva posts and here is a problem with
setting up NFS shares that still exists in Mageia.

It would be nice if someone else could confirm and really nice if this
were fixed in Mageia. It would be a lot easier for newbies to set up
shares on their home machines.

(below copied from Mandriva post
[http://forum.mandriva.com/en/viewtopic.php?t=113793&highlight=]

==============

I thought I would update this thread as it still applies to Mdv 2010.1

I had hoped that the Mandriva team would have fixed this to make it more
"user friendly" but here is the work-around but with more details. (I
submitted and updated the bugzilla here:
https://qa.mandriva.com/show_bug.cgi?id=52252

-------------------------

I use one of my computers to serve up my mp3's to the rest of the house
computers. When I do a fresh install of Mandriva and then use MCC
(Mandriva Control Centre) to find/mount the NFS shares it always fails
to complete the mount procedure. I then choose the "End" or "Complete"
button (sorry my systems are in French -> "Terminé"), MCC writes the
information to etc/fstab (however the shares still do not work).

I then boot up Konsole and do the following:

$su -
$ (admin password)
#cd ..
#cd etc
#kwrite fstab

Once in the fstab file, I find my shares and change the computer name to
its ip address (you find the computer ip address by hovering your mouse
cursor over the right-hand bottom taskbar computer connections icon),
save the file and then the shares are properly mounted. You can then
find them in the mnt/ folders.

I don't have a solution for your problem, but a way to avoid it,
together with getting the service you require.

For sharing partitions, I use the automounter (autofs). I uncomment the
"/net -hosts" in /etc/autofs/auto.master.
Assume that you also do that and have the line "192.168.2.4 linux-5" in
/etc/hosts.
Then to access a remote file on linux-5, you just have to do something like:
"ls /net/linux-5/home/marc/Documents/Marc/Famille/Photos" to get it
mounted and accessible.
In fact, any access to a file or directory named like this causes the
mount to occur.
You can also have links to such names to make your access simpler.
For example (avoid the use /mnt for such things, it's confusing with
system mounts):
ln -s /net/linux-5/home/marc/Documents/Marc/Famille/Photos /Shares/Photos
Accessing /Shares/Photos causes the remote mount to occur.

The advantage of using the automounter is mainly that mounts are only
done when required, and disappear when no longer in use. This highly
reduces the risk of having stale NFS handles. As it is used by many
people, it also works ;-)

Automounting work also with local partitions, I use it also for the
local Windows ones to avoid to have them mounted when they are not used,
while having a transparent mount when I need to access them.

Hope this helps.

It looks like your computer can't resolve linux-5 into its IP address
(192.168.2.4). You can test by:

$ dig linux-5

If this is indeed the case, you would have a similar problem with any operating
system.

You can fix the solution by putting an entry into your /etc/hosts file on you
client machine. Another fix would be to run a local DNS server to serve IP
addresses of your computers to each other on your LAN. For a small network with
static IPs, using the hosts file is the easiest.

HTH

Lets state the following facts to see what kind of possible solution you
got to my thought:

1. You have a laptop.
2. You're on a bus on your way home from somewhere that takes more than
30 minutes to get home.
3. The bus-company offers wireless internet-connection for free, BUT
each time you connect to that connection you have to agree to a
license-agreement to send & recieve packets.
4. IF you don't have any of the full-DVD iso's downloaded to burn on a
USB-key or a disc to install that way & want toburn the netinstall-iso
since it's quicker to do so & then burn it on a USB-key.
5. How can you boot the installation if there's no option to sign the
license-agreement for this wireless-connection in the boot-process of
the installation?

I'm therefor wondering how do we fix that?

Yes, installation would still be running when you have to leave the
bus (and the connection), so all work in vain. But it is an

Thanks Rama and Kevin for the optional methods ... but ... Mageia offers
to set NFS shares in the MCC and it can't seem to do it seamlessly. I

don't think that the problem lies in any particular box. The all have

We should make sure that the NFS shares are easily configured through

You're missing a fundamental point, Marc. If your boxes can't find each other by
name (by converting the name to an IP), they can't communicate by name.

Your network is not adequately setup for that, since you haven't provided any way
for the boxes to know who they are, by name. This problem exists for ANY network
of computers, whether Windows, Mageia, MacOS, etc..

Wiki: DNS

man: /etc/hosts , /etc/resolve.com

I think there is a graphical tool in mcc to enter the names and IP addresses of
hosts. If so, use that. (I don't have time right now to boot my laptop and look)

I will take a look or, if someone could point me to it, this would be great.

The point I am trying to make is that, Mageia claims to be able to set
NFS shares (as well as Samba shares) through the MCC. But, in my case,
it does not. I am wondering if it is the same for everyone else? Can
anyone establish NFS shares without any fiddling other than through the
MCC shares section? If this is not possible, then we should make Mageia
able to do so right from the installation. If the network needs setting
up by unique name identifiers, then this should perhaps be done at some
point during the installation in anticipation of a user setting up shares.

Being able to setup shares easily with other computers is still
considered cool by users. A distro that makes this easy will be more
attractive to users.

Cheers,

Marc

My thanks to all; I have installed VLC player, Acidrip and avidemux ans in the
last one found an option to save the audio alone (did not find it in VLC
player or Acidrip, does not matter).

This raised another question: my install is in (UK) English, with some other
locales installed, cause I also spellcheck in French, German, Spanish and
Portuguese, and live in Paraguay; I was surprised to see that part of the
avidemux GUI is in Spanish, and that smplayer, which I recently installed, has
all the GUI in Spanish, in spite of my install being in English; I also get
pop-ups in Spanish on various web-sites, or worse get the site in Spanish,
with no way to change it to English.

How can one avoid such behaviour, apart from uninstalling locales-ES ?

Cheers,

I understand the problem. It would most commonly be encountered here,
when using the wireless connection at a hotel, either with a click to
agree, or a password required.

The only solution I can think of, would be for the installer to include
at least one functional web browser, with the option to start it once the
network has been configured.

It wouldn't surprise me for the license/password screen to require flash
and java too.

it is true that when installing or whatever, we ask proxy and stuff, so if we

The net-install ISO has a shell (Alt-F2) with busybox which provides a

no, links and lynx are text-based browsers, they would redirect to the link

the person having this issue, could interrupt installer and go to a busybox

hmm, netcat... perhaps busybox can be modified to include lynx? that would be
somewhat easier than netcat...

it doesn't, but no suitable solution helps this for newbies anyway... the only
such solution would mean that the installer would need to be as complex as a
livecd... which means the sizes would grow too high and this would be totally
unusable and unmaintainable...

I would say, the net install iso is not for the faint at heart. Newbies will
use a live-cd or install-dvd and thus won't face that problem.

Right, but I haven't had any issues using the net-iso if I compare with
a full-DVD iso.............weirdly.
Installing with the net-iso always installs the latest updates & makes
the system stable.

Yeah, but we cant make sure the internet connection works even if it
"pretends" to be available.

So either use a livecd,
or if we have to fix it it ends up on the TODO list after creating world
peace, solving world hunger and unemployment and ...

So I guess it will be done around or after Mageia <Infinity>
