+Thanks for the advice.  Since I had tried my own fix and probably shot myself 
+in the foot, I did a complete reinstall, monitoring syslog as I did so. 
+Everything installed without a hitch.  I reasoned that any bugs existing in my 
+previous system would now be history. :)
