I'd like to ask if will be a section in mageia.org for local communities or will remain the same way as in forum.mandriva.com with redirections to the locale forums (except french that is integrated in the official forum)

What will be the needs for a local community ?
The wiki will be in the mageia.org, the central page (blog) will be translated as now, so we will need only a forum and/or a blog (for announces, articles about local events/issues) ?

I like this idea. Then not every community needs to have their own webspace / server. All donations for the full infrastructur would go directly to the mageia association, not to the local communities.
Also it would be clear for new user where to find help in every language. And there will be one "official" community (having more then 1 board for the same project is waste of knowhow, time, money etc.)

In general I agree to your points. Centralizing but at the same time
preserving the room for all local communities to extend to their own

But at the same time there may be already existing local communities

I thought you as mandrivauser.de administrator will answer me :)
Mandrivauser.de is a good example to demonstrate what I mean. Soon after the announcement of mageia some german people found an mageia board, and called them self the first german mageia community or something like this. So we already have (had? I don't know if that board still exists) 2 boards, 2 communitys. Waste of knowhow, time, money..

I'd like to see something like ubuntuuser.de for the whole community in all languages. Blog, Portal, Board and Wiki integrated.

Defining a local community should happen throught engagement (in local events, activ writing in board/wiki/blogs etc.). This is possible with centralised and non-centralised community.

Sry for this formatting. I have to use outlook..

>will remain the same way as in forum.mandriva.com with redirections to the
>locale forums (except french that is integrated in the official forum)

I think that it's important for a community to have a central gathering point,
in our case: www.mageia.org
As we're from all the corners of the world, it's nice so that everyone could
have a custom gathering point (ex. the site's localization in all those
languages).
I think, if you look at it like a service offered, mageia.org must offer a
standard package that includes website, forum, blog, wiki and mailing list in
localized languages. For most of us is enough and we know when we're donating
money for what we're doing it (infrastructure cost are also covered).

> What will be the needs for a local community ?

>as now, so we will need only a forum and/or a blog (for announces, articles
>about local events/issues) ?
>

That's a good question. What a local community needs could be that the "standard
package" do not satisfy them?
The only thing I can think of is if the local community intend to keep its own
fanzine/magazine/gazette, its own package repositories or translations (ex.
specific translations that do not fit/agree with the upstream). But once again,
it'll be better to concentrate the effort and publish this in English so that
all Mageia community may benefit.

It's better to stay united, it's easier for the project governance and overview.
Doing things locally brakes this unity and make forks and separation much
easier.

For Mandriva it's different because they have a business model based on
franchise, letting local partners to organize things in their own way, based on
Mandriva's products and support. This is not the case here to justify separated
local Mageia communities. But I may be wrong...

At first read, yes, it sounds ironic. But not so at second glance,
given the different sircumstances.

I'd also prefer a centralised presentation.
We already have a blog and a website with localized pages.
We will have a multilingual wiki and same kind of forum.
All these may give extra room for local things.

But at the same time all existing communities can have their own web
sites for their extra stuff. What I'd want to avoid is two different
communities of tha same language and/or country.

Of course we can't force that :)

No, isn't ironic, but every communication is a failure because of too may
factors in the way (language, culture, each own reality and values, and so
on...)
So my message is the perfect example why a communication is a failure: because
I'm not a native English speaker, you cannot cover all the details which provoke
that some people do not understand properly the message.

Personally, it's a shame to have two or more local communities (not to say
weird) and proves that things don't go well.
In this case, a local community must be agreed by the official board, if not
there'll be chaos and not good for Mageia's image.
But indeed, you cannot prevent people to fork :)

As far as we're (Romanian community) concerned, for the time being the "standard
package" is perfect for our needs!
And how can you be nearest to the main Mageia community than that? Just in the
middle of it! I doubt that we'll ever need more :)

Historically we always confirmed that the union makes the power. Better invest
your effort in a greater community, much chances of success, than waste it
locally with no continuity.
I saw so many projects or people that fork in a minority that
disappeared/discontinued with the time. They lost time, money and they got only
frustration.

Hello,

As for Openoffice/LibreOffice someone who "don't know" what a recent fork is maybe
?

I think the next step to clearly mark the difference will be a "totaly different
look". It is not the most important but for sure the more visible ;-)

 misc, ahmad)
- Review on infrastructure and web: tasks in progress, coming one
(rda, misc, boklm)
- Mageia communication: we are lacking of real communication for now.
How can we improve this? (spread Mageia news and events)

As usual, people are free to propose subjects for next week, or come to
participate/help.

( and as usual, the meeting log will be on http://meetbot.mageia.org/,

Great news - will try putting it to work.

Not only that. Many GNU/Linux users in Brazil are against new distros creation.
They guess that most new distros are unnecessary and add nothing new. They have
the view that the less distros, the better.

They ask, for instance, what is the necessity of establishing mageia and why not
join with PCLinuxOS. Many are br-linux.org site commentators.

But this argument has some truth: before Mandriva, Conectiva was the largest
distro in Brazil and, after, this post was occuped by Kurumin, a Knoppix
national live-cd remaster. From Kurumin, and later (K)Ubuntu, came many current
distros.

BUT, we hope that Mageia final version can bring something innovative and
different to change the views and establish itself as a quality alternative
(please remember all past discussions in this list about softmodens and welcome
center).
