Here's my thinking-outside-of-the-box suggetsion.

+Portmanteau
+
+ From Wikipedia:
+"Portmanteau" comes from French porter, to carry + manteau, cloak
+(from Old French mantel, from Latin mantellum). In modern French, a
+portemanteau (or porte-manteaux) is a clothes valet, a coat-tree or
+similar article of furniture for hanging up jackets, hats, umbrellas
+and the like.
+
+So Magia's (or anybody's) Portmanteau is a container (like a
+storehouse) for all things related to applications. From information
+to discussion, to experiments, to results and anything else related to
+applications and packages.
+
+And, it's French. 8)

+ - beautiful boot splash.
+ - very fast system boot to the first installation screen
+ - set language/keyboard to German
+
+** license text is in English, a German version was available, maybe
+it was copyrighted to Mandriva?
+
+ - installer recognized the existing Mandriva 2010.2 and asked if I
+want to upgrade (which I don't, I want my Mageia fresh!)
+ - partitioning was as expected easy as a pie with diskdrake
+
+ - selected custom desktop environment
+ - selected KDE in the group selection
+ - selected individual package selection
+ - - KDE 4.6.0 is available, office suite is missing, some other apps
+... this was expected, so no cardiac arrest here.
+ - - surprising: java plugin for Firefox is included!

+Altogether I selected 1325 packages for installation. Installation of
+the packages took  11 minutes until the password settings came up.
+
+Summary of settings:
+ - bootloader setting recognized w7 and Mandriva 2010.2
+**  soundcard setting is listed twice in the summary
+**  no proprietary driver on the DVD - this was expected, no cardiac
+arrest here.
+
+**** BIG PROBLEM: no driver for the Wifi chip (system recognizes the
+AR9285 Atheros), so no wireless internet connection unless you use a
+cable for eth connection. Same problem as with the Free Edition of
+Mandriva: you can't use it if you have no cable connection to your
+router.
+
+After finishing the installation the system does a clean
+shutdown/reboot (ejecting the DVD automatically)
+

+IIRC in your case getting kernel-firmware-extra from nonfree is all that

+I call this jumpstarting my laptop, have used everything from friends
+computers to my mp3 player to download the rpms to get the wireless
+drivers, sadly, I cant think of a "free" solution to it.

Hy,
+i like it, no problems so far...i installed the lxde version on an intel atom 330i don't know how much of the work was done by our own mageia team, but i'm sure it's allot and they have done a very good jobi'm more of a quality type of guy so steady work will do just fine for me

I also find the alpha quite nice, sure a few bugs are in there which will be

These are my own very conchise first impressions:

+overall, i'm very impressed with what i see. i thought it'd be worse.
+

+- no rescue (as expected, even though the option is listed)
+- when looking at the grub/gfxboot menu?, the text only shows 1 or 2 seconds 
+after the background
+- in installation, the backgrounds aren't anti-aliased (font also looks abit 
+odd; allthough it could be the vbox)
+- diskdrake still has a star icon(also wrong scaled) when saying "use free 
+space"
+- do we need a license agreement? can we not skip this?
+- ext4 by default
+- no btrfs? (except in advanced setup)
+- core media
+This screen was never clear to me, and i never selected it, however, perhaps 
+for iso installation, a mirror repository should be automatically there and 
+selected by default? so that if there's updates, they can already be used 
+during installation... ? WDYT?
+- i selected HTTP and it installed a few packages so i could enable networking 
+(2min)
+- the partition step kept being highlighted, even when i was configuring

+- i noticed sshd wasn't installed by default, neither was bash-completion

+how often do you have people installing ISO, then removing iso, to boot from 
+disk; only to find out that you have to put it in again to install a few 
+applications. granted the first reboot doesn't boot from the iso, but the
