[Mageia-dev] kde-l10n-en_US package changes

 Ahmad Samir + ahmadsamir3891 at gmail.com +
 Tue May 3 04:22:05 CEST 2011 +

 +
Hi,

Previously the kde-l10n-en_US package was produced from the kdelibs4
scr.rpm, this is an almost virtual package as it only contained one
single file. The main purpose behind that split was so as not to force
users who use the en_US system locale to install kde-l10n-en_GB
package to satisfy the 'kde-l10n' requires in lib*kdecore5.

This had a few problems, as:
1) kde-l10n-en_US had an Epoch, inherited from the the kdelibs4 spec,
from where it comes from
2) it had a different release than the rest of the kde-l10n packages
(that're produced by kde-l10n src.rpm).

This has been changed and now kdelibs4 won't produce kde-l10n-en_US,
instead that virtual package will come from the kde-l10n src.rpm, this
should make it easier for users to select which kde-l10-* they want
when installing task-kde4; previously kde-l10n-en_US was installed no
matter what due to a wrong requires in lib*kdecore5, however even
after fixing that bit, urpmi selected it without asking (either due to
1) or 2) above, or to some other reason that I don't know :)).

Since the old kde-l10n-en_US-4.6.2-7.mga1 had an Epoch, you'll need to
remove it manually:
# rpm -e --nodeps kde-l10n-en_US

This issue only existed in Cooker and now in Cauldron, both are
development releases, so no automatic obsoletes will be added (as this
would interfere with the new package from kde-l10n src.rpm which
doesn't have an Epoch)

@sysadm team: please remove kde-l10n-en_US-4.6.2-7.mga1 from the
master mirror manually, so that the new kde-l10n can be submitted.

Technically, commiters can commit on code ( ie no restriction on svn ).

Please stop doing that.
You're destroying correct translations.
You should have run "perl -pi -e 's/sertificate/certificate/" on the
*.po instead
of fuzzying the translations.
Now every translator will have to check what was the change that broke
the translation...

Fixing those things must be done on Transifex side and I will do that.
If you do it on svn side I just have to do it again, before uploading
the vhanges to Tx.

Yes, asked in bug #1095, and misc made this change :
http://svnweb.mageia.org/adm/puppet/modules/subversion/templates/hook_sendmail.pl?r1=954&r2=1571
So now commits to .pot files should be sent to i18n mailing list.

1) not everybody use transiflex.

2) why force people to go through transifex in order to fix changes that should
never have been done?
only part of those changes should have resulted in changed strings.
we've always run perl -pi -e in order not to disturb translators
with not real changes.

3) please use more descriptive changes, else it's hard to see what
actually changed.
eg: "typo fix (s/owerwrite/overwrite/)
instead of "typo fix (Bug #961)"

> But I did break a few files and am about fixing them.

Please always look at svn diff output before commiting
(or in case of big changes, look at list to "svn diff|diffstat")
That would prevent such errors

Last but not least, please separate commiting the actual typo fix
from syncing with

These are two orthogonal things:
1) merging a typo fix
2) syncing with code: syncing line numbers and maybe
fuzzying changed/deleting old /adding new lines.

Please only run "make merge" and the like only if there're actually be
changes.
Here there were none, so it both:
- just add useless noise (line renumbering) to the diff for no use
- introduce changes for other translators to have conflicts when running
"svn up" for no good reasons.

IMHO "make merge" should only be run by developers when actually
adding/deleting/changing lines which was not the case here.

Else, if it's just a typo for the english language, just run "perl -pi
-e" on the
catalogs too in order to prevent useless work for translators

Only if meaning has changed, then update the catalogs
though "make merge"
One can also reduce the SNR for translators by doing:
- mv *.pot /tmp
- make *.pot
- diff -u -I "^#" /tmp/ *.pot > l
- #review l
- svn revert *pot; patch -p0<l

It isn't worth applying all the renumbering when one knows
it'll change tomorrow again...

My 2 cents

AFAIK, I told to run "cd po; make foo.pot" after reading the Makfeile,
since people didn't react to the bugs. But next time, we will directly
assign the bugs to you, so you will at least have a good reason to be

Transiflex is the workflow tool for the translation process that was
decided on within the translation team. As this tool is quite new to most
of us, we're still trying to find our way around in it and mistakes can
happen due to our combined inexperience with the tool. Keeping things
properly in sync in both svn and transifex is also a process that we'll
end up mastering through working more with it.

In my experience Oliver has been trying very much so to make any needed
changes without as little fuss as possible for all the language teams.
While we all can still learn from gentle corrections and pointers, I think
they should be delivered in exactly that way: gentle. I find your messages
cutting into Oliver's work anything but. Finally, if you want to argue over
things already decided within the i18n team, please feel free to join it.

My two cents worth,

Remco

I see your reasoning about some mistakes I made. The worst one was
commiting those broken (aka empty) files.
And I will be happy to learn how to handle things better in the
future.
But since - if I don't see this totally wrong - most of the teams are
using Tx - and I have to merge those string changes there again, I
thought I could reduce the work.

Let's not develop this into a serious problem, since it is not. So
let's all get back to work - me having learned something new again.

Hi fellow packagers

Tadaaaaaaa complete freeze is very near now: 10th of may. As explained
in last meeting, you
will not be able to submit anymore unles exceptions.

So please check bugs and missing dependancies together with potential
upgrade problems.

Thanks for your effort in this last run

IMHO there should be an exception for tainted since the fact that the build
system can't build dual target packages[1] yet, is blocking the submission
of many packages that depend on these. I saw the build system issue has
been elevated to "release-blocker", IMHO it should be also freeze delaying
(unless all the Audio/Video stuff is considered unimportant by the majority
here).

That's not a valid reason for delaying release freeze.
We still have people with people with permissions to submit even if we
are freeze.

Yeah under KDE this is a bit of a problem. KMix is a bit of a pain to
